Overview
OVERVIEW
This volume describes the engineering design considerations and philosophies for the
pipeline portion of the Project, including:

new mainline segments (Alberta, Ontario East, Québec and New Brunswick)

pipeline laterals (Cromer, Montréal and Lévis)

Canaport Energy East marine terminal pipeline connection (Saint John
Connection)

connecting pipelines from the existing conversion segments to pump stations that
are not co-located with existing TransCanada Mainline compressor stations

minor route realignments around existing TransCanada Mainline facilities

related pipeline components such as mainline valves (MLVs), cathodic protection
(CP) and in-line inspection (ILI) facilities such as launchers and receivers
The volume is presented in multiple parts. The first part is divided into three sections,
beginning with this Section 1, Overview. The overview concludes with a detailed list
of appendices (see Table 1-1).
Section 2, General Design, begins by outlining the engineering considerations and
philosophies that will be generally applicable to the new pipelines installed for the
Project, including mainline, laterals, terminal connections, and route re-alignments
along converted segments. Topics include:




safety and environmental protection
pipeline route selection criteria
quality management
engineering design details such as:














class location
depth of cover
pipe wall thickness
line pipe specifications
valves and fittings
corrosion control elements
in-line inspection facilities
watercourse crossings
geohazard assessment
buoyancy control
acid rock management
designated protected areas
valve placement
pipeline integrity
Section 3.0, Pipeline-Specific Information, describes the design considerations and
activities that will be specific to the design of the individual mainline segments,

laterals and terminal connections. Pipeline-specific information is provided from west
to east, by each new pipe category, except for the route re-alignments that are detailed
in Volume 5, Conversion Design. Topics include:






selected pipeline routing and rationale for the new pipelines
class location
pipe design specifications
watercourse crossings
geohazard and hydrotechnical analyses
designated protected areas traversed
The information provided in these sections is preliminary, supported by initial results
from field investigation and engagement programs. Revisions and refinements will be
made as additional data are collected and assessed, and as engineering progresses
through detailed design.
