The "Ice Man (Mummy) Cometh"
to
Franklin Middle School
On Tuesday, October 7, 2014, 6th grade
students at Franklin Middle School participated in a
telepresence presentation by Dr. Frank Ruhli, Head
of the Swiss Mummy Project, University of Zurich,
in Switzerland. Students learned about Otzi the
Iceman and the mummification process. This is an
outstanding way to show our students the world
from inside their classrooms.
Franklin Middle School Celebrates
El Dia de Los Muertos
Franklin Middle School students celebrated
El Dia de Los Muertos by participating in
several activities, including watching clips
from actual Dia de Los Muertos events,
writing poetry, deciphering coded messages,
designing their own skulls, creating a Venn
diagram comparing El Dia de Los Muertos
with Memorial Day and Halloween, and
reading and answering questions relating to the event. One of the activities involved decorating masks for the occasion. Dia de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead) is a holiday celebrated on November 1. Although marked throughout Latin America, Dia de los Muertos
is most strongly associated with Mexico, where the tradition originated. Assured that the
dead would be insulted by mourning or sadness, Dia de los Muertos celebrates the lives of
the deceased with food, parties, and activities the dead enjoyed in life.
NEW ATHLETIC CALENDAR!
The Franklin Middle School athletic calendars are now on our website. If you
go to the Franklin Middle School Homepage, click on Athletics (at the top), you
can then access the sport calendar that is needed. If there is a change to the schedule it is automatically updated on this calendar.

January.
Parents of incoming ninth graders attending Parker are invited to attend a subject selection meeting on Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. Craig’s subject selection meeting will be held on
Wednesday, January 7, 6:00 p.m.

Inclement Weather / School Closing and Delays
The School District of Janesville would like to inform families of weather related closing policies.
Infinite Campus will serve as our primary means of notification. We urge parents and family members
to supply your student’s school with current contact information and updates as they occur. WCLO
and additional radio and TV stations will be contacted regarding school closings or delays. The School
District of Janesville “Twitter” account (Handle: JanesvilleSchool) and Facebook page will also be updated. Closing and delay information will be posted no later than 6:00 a.m.
Decisions about whether to cancel school are made in coordination with both the Janesville Transit System and the Van Galder Bus Company as well as the passage of city streets, safety of rural students and information from the county highway department and the city street department. The final
decision to delay or close rests with Superintendent, Dr. Karen Schulte. If there is not school for the
School District of Janesville, all Preschool 4 Janesville classrooms that are located in the School District
of Janesville Elementary School locations will not have school. If school is not cancelled and families
do not feel it is safe for their child to come to school, then they should keep their children home. Your
child will receive a principal excused absence. Families must call the attendance office of the school in
which their child attends to report the decision to keep them home. The Superintendent will continue
to have the option of delaying the start of school by an hour.
Should a delayed start occur; elementary school classes will begin at 9:20 a.m. and middle and high
school classes will begin at 9:00 a.m. Special education students will also report at 9:20 a.m. All Early
Childhood Special Education and all Preschool 4 Janesville classrooms that are located in our School
District of Janesville Elementary School locations will not have morning session. Afternoon sessions
for both programs will have class as normal. If your child attends a Preschool 4 Janesville program at a
community preschool location, please check with the community location whether or not school is
cancelled. Universal Free Breakfast will be served on delayed start days.
Our schools do not close early in an attempt to avoid incoming snow or ice storms. This
decision is to protect children who may get home before their families and have no access or supervision at home. There also will be no athletic contests and no practices on days school is called off for
weather reasons. The gyms will also be closed. On days when school is in session but weather has
progressively gotten worse, cancellations for after school or evening athletics or extracurricular activities will be announced by 2:00 p.m. on WCLO radio that day. Infinite Campus will serve as our primary means of notification.
The district asks that families listen to WCLO AM 1230 radio station first for delay or closing
reports or visit the School District Facebook page. In order to keep district lines open for general
operations we suggest parents not call the district for closing information.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM FRANKLIN PTSA!
A Big THANK YOU to all of you who have helped
with PTSA activities so far this year. We had a lot of great
volunteers and patrons at our first Scoopie Night in October. We also had many volunteers donate food and their
time helping set up and clean up during the staff conference meal. So far this year we have had three Rec Night
concessions that were manned by Franklin volunteers.
Rec Night has been very well attended and everyone has
enjoyed themselves.
Congratulations to Mrs. Gaver's Advisory for winning
the frozen custard party for the most in attendance during
the October’s Scoopie Night! The next Scoopie Night is
scheduled for Wednesday, December 10, 2014 from 4-8
p.m. We hope to see you there enjoying a meal with your
family or having a delicious treat. If you would like to volunteer to help at our Scoopie Night, please call Mrs.
Knutson at 608-743-6006 to sign-up for a 30 minute shift.
Spirit Wear is always a great way to show your school
spirit and support your PTSA. Order forms are available
in the main office. Order forms may be filled out and returned with your payment. Spirit Wear is a great holiday
gift idea. If we have your order the first week of December you will have your items in time for the holidays.
PTSA will not hold a meeting in December. The next
scheduled meeting will be January 12, 2015 at 5:30 p.m. in
Room 105. We will discuss nominations for “Teacher Of
The Year” as well as “Support Staff Member Of The
Year,” in addition to other business. If you are interested
in providing input, please join us!
Franklin PTSA has a Facebook page...follow us on
Facebook and Twitter for comments and announcements.
PTSA would like to thank all of the great staff at
Franklin Middle School. We appreciate the support and
guidance you provide our children each day!
We also appreciate all PTSA members with any goods
or services provided to help support our children and staff.

Janesville School District Information for Parents
Public School Open Enrollment Timelines
The State of Wisconsin has announced the application period for open enrollment (also known as public school choice) which begins in February for the
following school year. Open Enrollment laws permit children to attend a public school in a school district other than the one in which they live. The open
enrollment application period for the 2015-2016 school year is from February
2, 2015 – April 30, 2015 by 4:00 pm. Parents are encouraged to apply on-line
at https://www2.dpi.state.wi.us/OpenEnrollApp. Although on-line application is recommended, paper applications may be obtained from the Department of Public Instruction or any school district after January 15, 2015, and
must be delivered (hand-delivery is recommended) to the nonresident school
district during the application period. Paper applications to attend Janesville
must be submitted to the Administrative Services Department no later than
4:00 p.m. on April 30th (a postmark does not constitute timely submission).
Applications turned in prior to February 2nd will be returned as not valid and
must be resubmitted after February 2nd but before April 30th.
Enrollment in a requested school or program is subject to space and other
limitations and is not guaranteed. Transportation is the responsibility of the
parent.
Under School District of Janesville board policy, students who attended the
district under open enrollment the previous year are not required to reapply for
the following school year, unless they will be entering middle school.
An application is required for each sibling in the family. For example, if a
family has one child in elementary school that has been approved for open
enrollment and a new student entering kindergarten next year, the student
entering kindergarten must apply for open enrollment in order to attend the
School District of Janesville.
Parents will be informed in June whether their open enrollment applications
have been approved or denied. The student’s school or program placement
will be provided in June.
If you have questions, please contact the Administrative Services Office at
743-5006.

If you wish to apply to have your student transferred/placed in
another school within the district next school year (2014-2015),

will be accepted from December 1 through December 15 only.
Submit your Request for School Transfer/Placement Within the
School District Form (Goldenrod) to your home school attendance area office. Parents applying for Requests for School
Transfer/Placement Within the School District will be notified
of approval or disapproval in late January 2014. Parents applying

school office of your home school attendance area.
Moving?
If you will be moving from your current home address please
contact Franklin Middle School’s school guidance office at 7436026 as soon as possible to determine what paperwork you will
need to fill out for your child to continue attending his/her current school. Please note: if you are moving to an address outside
the School District of Janesville in most cases your child is eligible to continue attending the School District of Janesville as long
as you complete the appropriate paperwork within the required
timeline.
If you have any questions about school placement for a particular address, please contact Administrative Services Secretary
Tami Carlson at 743-5006. The Administrative Services Office is
open year round.
If you are the parent of an elementary student and will be

World Language
Very soon all students at Franklin will be selecting courses for
the 2015-2016 school year. There are so many excellent courses
to choose from in the School District of Janesville, including
World Language courses.
All students registering in 7th, 8th, and 9th grade for the 2015
-2016 school year should consider registering for either Spanish,
French or Chinese, for several different reasons. First, some colleges and universities (including the Wisconsin system) require a
certain level of world language to satisfy college pre-entrance or
graduation requirements. Taking world language at the middle/
high school level can allow students to begin to satisfy some or all
of those requirements. In addition, some colleges and universities
offer retro-active credits to students who have studied a world
language in middle/high school. Also, many students will be
working in a career someday where a second language could be an
asset. Finally, knowing a second language allows a person to be
able to communicate with so many more people at home or during travel.
To learn more about the World Language department at
Franklin Middle School, you are invited to contact:
Mrs. Cornelio (Spanish) 743-6130

Ms. Khan (Chinese) 743-6071
Meet Mr. Gremminger! (6th Grade)

In addition to being Academic Learning Coach/

At the middle school level, a teacher has accepted the responsibility, at each grade level, to act as a resource to their
colleagues, capable students and their families. The advantage
is that these individuals are in your school all day, every day.
This model will assist more students on a regular basis.
Enrichment activities are being introduced to more students,
teachers are sharing more strategies, and more high-level instruction is happening.
Contact the Gifted Education Advocate for your child’s
grade level with any questions or concerns. General program
questions may be referred to Amy Sheridan, Coordinator of
Gifted Education, District Assessment and Art Curriculum at
743-5035.
The Franklin staff wishes to extend a big,
“thank you” to the PTSA for providing a
wonderful dinner during Parent-Teacher
Conferences and for supporting the annual book fair!
Franklin’s Holiday Giving Tree
The Franklin Middle School Holiday Giving Tree is set-up in the main office. A number of students have already been selected by our caring parents and staff “Santas.” If you would like to
choose an envelope from the Giving Tree please contact the main office at 608-743-6005 (student
name's are kept confidential). By selecting an envelope from the Giving Tree you would donate
$25.00 for that student to receive a Franklin Middle School sweatshirt with their name printed
on the back.
