News and Events - El Paso County

Hello First Tee Parents and Friends,
Our calendar is very busy going from spring into summer and we're sure yours is too. We hope
that you can schedule time to participate in one of our upcoming sessions or events. Our
Summer Sessions have already started to fill up, so check your calendar and register today.
Remember: if your plans change and you can't attend a session you registered for, we can
always accommodate you with a refund or a transfer to a session later on this year.
Also, please know that there still is construction going on at the entrance to Ascarate Park.
Follow the detour, which will take you around to the pool parking lot, and then head towards the
course.
See you soon!

Volunteer FAQs
Where do I go? You can volunteer at any of our 3 programming sites. Ascarate Park is our main
location and our two affiliates are at Butterfield Trail Golf Club and Ft. Bliss Golf Course.
Do I need golf experience? No, but it helps if you like to work with kids.
Can parents volunteer? Yes, and actually we recommend it so parents can understand what
their child is learning.
What will I do while I am volunteering? You can help the coaches set up for classes and help
check in the participants. You will be paired with a coach who is assigned to a group of
participants and help keep them on task and safe.
Can I help in any other way? Yes! We need help with administrative tasks such as filing or
entering our participants’ names into the database. We can also use help preparing for our
events and on the day of an event. Volunteers may also participate on a sub-committee of our
Board.
How many hours would you like me there? We appreciate having regular volunteers at our
sessions. You can volunteer for a certain day or class (usually 2 or 3 times a week, depending
on the session).
Invest in our community by eating ice cream!
On April 4, Price's awarded over $200,000 to local schools and non-profits that serve our
community's youth, and we were one of them!
Price's is a huge supporter of The First Tee of Greater El Paso and has been a partner since our
chapter opened its doors.
Participants proudly display the Price's logo on caps and shirts:
Every time you buy one of their products such as milk, juice, ice cream, or their latest line of
sweet teas, you are supporting a local company that has given over $3,800,000 back to El Paso
through their Give 'Em Five grants.
We talked to hundreds at Generation 2000!
During the two day event at the Convention Center, we talked to hundreds of families, many of
whom had never heard of us.
Everyone who gave us their contact information was eligible for a drawing for a free session and
we will be contacting the winners shortly.
A special "Thank you" goes out to the volunteers who helped pass out information and manage
our booth during the event. Volunteers were from our Board of Directors, parents of our
participants, and from Valle Verde Early College High School and Parkland High.
A note about Global Youth Service Day
Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) is the largest service event in the world. United Way of El
Paso County is organizing El Paso's Annual GYSD which will take place April 20-22, 2012.
http://www.unitedwayelpaso.org/gysd.html
The goals of GYSD are to: mobilize youth (ages 5-25) to identify and address the needs of their
communities through service and learning, support youth on a lifelong path of service and civic
engagement, and educate the public, the media, and the policymakers about the year-round
contributions of young people as community leaders.
If you are interested in participating in one of the projects, or if you have a project that needs
volunteer assistance, please contact the United Way. Last year's projects included community
clean-ups, planting trees and flowers, canned food drives, and many more.
The First Tee will have a booth at the kick-off event at the Chamizal on April 20 from 5:00-8:00
pm. (If you'd like to volunteer in our booth that day please let us know!!)
