The CLA Advising News Student Affairs and Advising Center (SAAC) College of Liberal Arts 310 Kirby Plaza; 726-8180; [email protected] Advising Scenario #2: How would you advise this student? Advising workshops often utilize scenarios as a way for advisors to identify underlying developmental issues and practice advising skills. The following scenario highlights some common issues that may arise midway through the semester: Ashley has completed the Liberal Education Program requirements and declared sociology as her major, but is unsure if that is the right choice for her. She enjoys working with people, communicating with children, and loves the outdoors. However, she is concerned about translating her interests into possible career paths. Her question to you is, “What should I do?” Developmental issues reflected in this scenario: Ashley is dealing with developmental issues related to developing purpose (assessing interests, identifying career options, and setting goals). An Approach to Assisting Ashley: Ashley needs assistance in developing a plan of action. She needs to gather information from a variety of resources in order to make an informed decision, and she needs assistance in identifying some specific action steps. Create a “to do” list together. Have Ashley write the items down and make a duplicate list to keep in her advising folder to serve as a reminder at your next meeting. Here are a few suggestions for Ashley’s “to do” list: • Gather information about majors and careers. Review the UMD Catalog. Read course descriptions related to majors of interest and review requirements for those majors. Visit collegiate student affairs offices to pick up information about majors, including “What can I do with a major in….” handouts. Visit the Career Services Resource Center (22 SCC). • Discuss interests, abilities, and values with friends and family. What types of tasks do you enjoy the most? What do people tell you you’re good at? What lifestyle issues are important to you? • Register for CLA’s Major & Career Exploration workshop (see reverse). Schedule a follow-up appointment with Ashley to discuss what she has discovered. If her indecision continues, encourage her to schedule an appointment with a Career Services counselor. If Ashley has discovered alternative majors or minors, refer her to the appropriate student affairs office to declare her major or minor or file a Change of College application.
