Students are back and the Newman Center is in high gear! The first weekend of the year
drew over 400 students to Mass! Students overflowed in the upstairs lounge, the small
chapel, the back room, and outside the front (open) doors! (read more below!)....

Mission Statement
To invite students into a
deeper relationship with
Jesus Christ and
His Church, leading to a
liftime of discipleship
and evangelization.
Over 2% of the student population of Northern Arizona University was present! The
Newman Center has quickly become a home away from home for new and returning
students.
This year’s “Welcome Week” activities have drawn the largest crowds ever to the Newman
Center. Crowds spilled beyond the front yard and into the street as over 450 students came
to play a game of Fugitive (giant leaps in comparison to the 175 that came out last year)!
These students’ main objective was running through campus as “robbers” trying to make it to
the on-campus Observatory and back without getting caught by the “cops.” The game drew
so much attention that Fr. Matt even had a talking to by the real cops :)
Other activities included a hike of the Lava Tube Cave, with over 180 students, and our first
Newman Night of the year (Mass, free dinner, and guest speaker) with over 120 students.
Each person is being welcomed and invited into bible studies and other activities! These
activities draw students into meaningful friendships and an encounter with Christ.
Family Weekend: September 27th; Tailgate 1-4pm, Mass 9pm.
FLAGSTAFF, ARIZONA
FALL 2014
“Dear young people, do not be mediocre; the Christian life challenges us
with great ideals.”-Pope Francis
chaplain’s corner
Dear Friends of the NAU Newman Center,
One of the biggest questions that we ask throughout our
lives is “Who am I?” In order to truly understand who we
are, we must first learn more about the One who made
us. As we seek Him, He reveals who we are, and who He
made us to be, leading us to a path to peace and fulfillment.
Over 20,000 students ask themselves this question at NAU,
and the NAU Newman Center invites them into a deeper
relationship with Jesus Christ, the One who is the Way, the
Truth, and the Life. Christ desires us to know Him. When we
are able to know Christ deeper, He is able to reveal our true
selves to us. In order to grow deeper in knowing Christ, we
have to open ourselves up to Christ’s love, the Gospel, and
to how the Lord wants to work through us. I invite you, as I
have the students here at NAU, to open your heart to Christ
and His love, and truly find yourself.
Peace, Fr. Matt

Family Weekend
Family Weekend is coming up
September 27th!
The Newman
Center will be tailgating before the
football game (in Walkup Skydome
parking lot from 1-4pm); look for
the white Mass Bus! After the
game we will be hosting a Saturday
evening 9pm Mass (Sunday
vigil), followed by a dessert social.
Thanks to the generosity of several
donors, we are excited to be able to offer a matching collection
Family Weekend, up to $30,000! One-time gifts, or
pledges for the year will be matched, doubling each person’s
gift! Anyone is welcome to participate, even if you’re aren’t
able to join us in person that weekend! Together we are
reaching more students, and changing lives!
SEEK Conference
The NAU Newman Center is blessed to have a team of FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic
University Students) missionaries - college graduates who have committed at least two years
to reaching out to college students and helping them grow in their faith. The missionaries
seek to get to know students and meet them where they are at (often it is eating on campus,
playing sports, or after Mass). Students are then invited to join a small faith-sharing group, with
a group of peers. If they want, they then have an opportunity to be mentored and grow even
more, as they learn to lead their own faith sharing group. Over 150 students were in these
groups last year, led by 44 student missionaries!
This year we are especially excited about the upcoming
SEEK Conference, in which we will take 175 NAU students to
Nashville, Tennessee over New Year’s. We will hear national
speakers and meet other on-fire students from around the
country. For more info, see www.catholicjacks.org!
Newman Inn
Imagine faith-based student housing at NAU! Soon we may not have to
imagine it anymore! The NAU Newman Center is actively seeking to open
a 26-room faith-based dormitory, open to all students of NAU. Students
will have a chance to live in community with other students who seek to
grow in virtue and holiness, while they seek truth in the university. Growing
together they will better encounter the One who is Truth! Students will live
adjacent to the Newman Center, mere feet from campus, and right along
Milton Ave. Newman Inn will allow the Newman Center to reach more
students this year, and untold more in the years to come!
Please pray for students attending Lumberjack Awakening Retreat November 7-9!
