There are more than 100 members from Holy Family
helping out in some way with the Society of St Vincent de Paul. But
that’s not enough. What, do you say?...Who, me? I could never do that
kind of work?
We have said that too! But we’ve discovered that we change in serving.
Miracles happen in the ordinariness of life. Like receiving telephone requests
at our office (daytime, 2 hours once/month or once/week…whatever time you
can do), or meeting with people in need. We do not do visits alone..we
match up with a partner and most like to do 1 or 2 visits/week but some
prefer 1 or 2 visits/month. Each persons help is greatly appreciated by our
clients. Home visitors always remain a special need; but also very important is
helping with administrative work, organizing a project, or helping with St
Vincent de Paul Store operations. We serve in many ways.
Last year our Holy Family Conference had over 2,000 requests for help from
which we served over 5,000 people. We are on pace this year to serve more.
Remember Jesus feeding the 5,000? We continue his work today, but in our
way. Our miracles aren’t as dramatic as our Lord’s but nevertheless they
happen. People are helped.

Featured Ministry: Nazareth Young Adults
A Ministry of Catechism & Cocktails to Young Adults
There’s something new going on in Fond du Lac. It’s fun and social and it’s CATHOLIC! Nazareth Young
Adults, an outreach of Holy Family, has attracted young adults ages 18-35 from across Fond du Lac and
beyond to experience renewal in their faith and find community with other Catholic young adults.
Headed by the vision of Fr. Luke Strand and coordinator Christina Novak (herself a 23-year-old
parishioner), Nazareth Young Adults launched its outreach last fall and quickly gathered momentum. Now
they have a line-up of dynamic talks, prayer and worship, exciting trips, and social activities planned
throughout the summer. The group’s activities have attracted young adults from Fond du Lac and outlying
areas such as Ripon, Campbellsport, West Bend, Chilton, Oshkosh, Appleton, and Green Bay –
convincing its core team leaders that young adult ministry is a vital aspect of the Church.
Nazareth Young Adults takes its motto “Quo Vadis?” or “Where are you going?” from St. Peter. According
to tradition, when St. Peter was fleeing from Rome to avoid persecution he had a vision of the risen Lord
walking past him toward Rome. Peter asked him “Lord, where are you going?” The Lord replied, “I go to
Rome to be crucified once again.” With fearless faith Peter turned around and headed back to Rome to
face his martyrdom. The mission of Nazareth is to point young adults on the road to encounter Jesus and
His Church.
This summer, all young adults are invited to the summer speaker series, titled “The WHY behind the
WHAT of
CATHOLICISM,” to answer the question “Why do we believe that?” with guest speakers and cocktails. The
events are held at JukeBox Charlie’s in Fond du Lac on the third Tuesdays of the month, June through
August, at 7:00 p.m.
Servings will include topics on the saints, the Pope, and Theology of the Body, with social time and Q & A.
One of the pillars of Nazareth is prayer rooted in Eucharistic devotion. All young adults are invited to Holy
Hours of Power on the 4th Tuesdays of the month, June through August. This is a time of adoration with
other young adults from 8-9 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church.
Help Nazareth fulfill its ministry! Encourage young adults in the age bracket of 18-35 to take the leap and
check us out. Invite a friend or the young adult next to you at Mass to attend!

Our Faith in Action
Our Lady Gate of Heaven, Chicago and Holy Family, Fond du Lac
By Jack Braun
A Retreat titled “Walking In Their Shoes”
- A Call to Evangelize Across Cultures!
The travels on the weekend of March 20 & 21, 2010 brought together the sister
parishes of Holy Family and Our Lady Gate of Heaven (the GATE). Although we
traveled to Seton Academy Center in South Holland, IL, the ride to the south side of
Chicago was not a long one. The 3 ½ hour ride again provided us the opportunity to
share stories of our many times together with the GATE. We reflect on the true
blessings of our relationship and we are thankful for the time to renew friendships
and create new ones. Mutual trips include several “working” mission trips, day trips
to join together for Mass and a meal, several GATE visits to Fond du Lac with Fr. Mel,
their Gospel Choir and their liturgical dancers. Now we are joining together for our third retreat as a sister parish – this
time with a special theme to “welcome the neighbor amongst us”.
To me a highlight of the retreat was when Sheila Adams led the opening session and she mentioned that our sister parish
relationship has been going on for seven years! As I led the discussion later in the day, I asked the retreat participants
what this relationship has meant to them. Where were they when the relationship began and how have they been a part
of this?
Reflections:
By DeLois Harris of the GATE: I was honored to be a part of the joint retreat of Our
Lady Gate of Heaven & Holy Family parishes. What an awesome time. Our
facilitators, Dr. Sheila Adams & Jack Braun gave us a wealth of knowledge which led
to some great group discussions. Everyone appeared to be comfortable with joining
in during the large group discussions. I especially appreciated our small group
sessions. During the small groups, so much information was exchanged, discussed,
agreed on and debated. It is my firm belief, that such dialogs are great in-roads to
everlasting friendships with deeper understanding of all involved. Now, before you
think this weekend was all work and no fun – NOT! The fellowship was above all the
greatest, as well as the delicious food. Some of us were rekindling established
friendships, while others were just getting to know each other. I loved Fr. Bob’s reflections on his travels. I also love his
style of delivery. I would like to personally thank; Carol & Jack Braun, Don Cayen, Sr. Caryl Hartjes, Judy Pellerin, Fr. Bob
Stiefvater & Christine Watts, who are lovingly referred to as our “Angels from the North”. Many thanks to all the
participants of the joint retreat and to all the families of Holy Family. May God continue to bless us all.
P. S. Would YOU like to be part of the next joint retreat?
By Don Cayen of Holy Family: The retreat was really worthwhile. I am sorry I had to miss the Sunday events. For me
there were three highlights. The first was talking to my "partner" about her favorite color, number, and season. I know
that was a contrived "ice-breaker", but for me it worked. Really put me more at ease. The second highlight was Fr.
Stiefvater's short remarks about moving within and between cultures, races, and status. That was something new to
me. To my surprise and gratification, I recognized an example of that right here at
Holy Family a few days ago when a person whom I would say is in a "lower" economic
class expressed frustration at feeling inadequate because of his perceived inability to
think and know as more "middle" class men do. I never would have recognized that
before. The third highlight was the revelation by the GATE people that being
Catholic is perceived as acting "white." Who would have thought of that? I got a wee
bit of appreciation of the prejudice and difficulties black Catholics endure, again
something entirely new to me. Finally, I liked the small group - it allowed us to
interact well.

Deepening of relationship
Affirmation of what we have been doing
I find it enlightening to have these experiences ongoing with others. The exchange is always fulfilling to my spiritual,
ministerial and personal growth
Sharing faith and a retreat with fellow Catholics of other races magnified our faith as Catholics and our desire to love one
another
It made me think about being considerate of others and their feelings about Catholics
I got a lot of new ideas. It was uplifting and the discussions helped deepen my faith
Recognizing similarities and also the differences we encounter as a faith community. The cultural and spiritual
education we received
I can easily recognize the need for future chances for evangelization
Retreats are always refreshing and uplifting. The challenge for me will be to practice and pass on the things that I heard
and learned
Please join us on June 26 & 27th as we welcome the GATE
to our Community!
In addition to the two Masses - Saturday, June 26, 4:00pm at St. Peter and Mass,
Sunday, June 27 at 10:15pm – we are planning to spend time with members of the
GATE in separate activities:
Social following the Masses
Youth and adult service activity, Saturday, June 26
Adult activity – reflection and small group, Saturday, June 26
Host GATE members for breakfast, Sunday, June 27, up to 20 homes needed

Enrich your Faith with these Upcoming Events
What Is JustFaith Ministries?
JustFaith Ministries provides programs
that transform people and expand their
commitment to social ministry. Through
these life-changing opportunities,
members of a church or parish can study,
explore and experience Christ’s call to
care for the poor and vulnerable in a
lively, challenging, multifaceted process
in the context of a small faith community.
JustFaith participants are exposed to a
variety of authors, theologians and
persons of faith. They study
scripture-based documents, read
books, view videos and engage in
dialogue with outside speakers.
They learn how social structures and
systems touch persons of various
socio-economic levels; how they
influence people’s opinions and ideas
and how they affect the way we treat
God’s living creation.
Participants meet the poor, the
disenfranchised and the outcast in
“Border Crossing” experiences to gain
an understanding of others’ life
perspectives and how it might be to
walk in another person’s shoes.
Participants learn about charity to others
and about seeking justice in societies
and systems.
They learn to think critically, to ask
questions and to draw conclusions, in
light of the Gospel.
JustFaith participants pray together.
Each participant engages in a
spiritual journey of faith.
JustFaith participants make a
commitment to meet weekly,
September through April.
JustMatters participate in 6 or 8 week
sessions focusing on a particular
current social justice topic.
Engaging Spirituality is a 21-week program that invites faithful adults to
break open their lives, penetrate the realities of our times, and explore the
intersection between Christian spirituality and Gospel justice. Participants
focus on the practical challenges of following Jesus, engaging contemplation
while immersing themselves in the heart of our fragmented world.
Reflections
By Carol Braun co-facilitator: From the wisdom of 24 spiritual mentors, the
listening and sharing done in our group, centering prayer, and the awakening in
my heart from our immersion experiences, my spiritual journey has been
blessed for the last 21 weeks. I have a fuller understanding of God’s will for my
life and those I need to serve. I highly recommend Engaging Spirituality.
By Karen Boede, participant: Why did I join Just Faith Engaging Spirituality? I
wanted more.... more substance to my faith life, a deeper relationship with
Jesus, and a great understanding of what it is to be Catholic. What did I find?
My eyes were opened to what I am capable of doing and being. I saw others
where before I saw nothing. I walked this journey with five other women who
helped and supported me through my growth. I've learned compassionate
listening... listening with my heart, not just my ears. Would I recommend Just
Faith Engaging Spirituality? You better believe it. A great way to test the
waters of faith and see if you can bloom where you can grow.
If you are interested in of any of the JustFaith programs,
please contact Caryl Hartjes, CSA at 926-0289 or Jack
Braun at 921-0580, x119 or email at [email protected].

Success of JustFaith at Holy Family
30-week JF program: In 2003-04, we conducted our first 30-week session of JF with 14 participants. In 2005-06 we had
2 groups. In 2008-09, we graduated 5 participants. All total, we have had over 65 people experience JF.
JustMatters is an expanding series of formation materials from JustFaith Ministries. JustMatters allows participants to
focus on a particular current social justice topic. The general format for these topic-focused modules is prayer, readings,
videos, speakers and dialogue. JustMatters allows a group of eight to fifteen people to give sustained attention to a
specific area of social concern or social ministry (some with special emphasis on Catholic social teaching) and culminating
in a call to engaged action.
In 2008, we conducted our first JustFaith module on Prison Reform. In the fall of 2009, we conducted the module titled
“Crossing Borders” which focused on immigration reform.

CCHD (Catholic Campaign for Human Development) and local grant recipient
- NAMI / Friendship Corner!
In 2009, CCHD of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee awarded NAMI FDL and Friendship Corner drop-in center with a grant to
hire an Executive Director. Each year CCHD hosts a multi-media youth arts contest allowing students to highlight one of
the recent grant recipients. We are proud to share the memo and award winning entry for that contest!
Memo announcing Contest and Winner: On March 20-21, 2010, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD)
hosted the Multi-Media Youth Arts Showcase at St. John Vianney Parish in Brookfield, WI. The purpose of the showcase
was to highlight student artwork that was created after learning about a local or nationally funded CCHD organization. In
our second year promoting the contest in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, our office received nearly 150 contest entries.
We’re pleased to share the top entry that has advanced into national level competition, submitted by Sydney Zettler of
Pius XI High School, written about the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Friendship Corner in Fond du Lac, WI.
NAMI vs. NAMI
N The naïve, the nescient, the narrow minded
A The abasing, the abhorring, the accusatory
M The merciless, the mimicking, the meretricious
I The insecure, the ignorant, the insensitive
N The nurturing, the neighborly, the noble minded
A The assuring, the absolving, the accepting
M The merciful, the mindful, the meaningful
I The ideal, the important, the impressive
Those who use your name in a mocking manner:
Cannot comprehend
Do not understand
Refuse to extend
A kind, helping hand
Others show benevolence in a socially adventitious manner:
Recognizing that socialization is required for empowerment
They offer a chance for it to be obtained
Extending a hand while allowing their aid to be lent
So that the future is one which can be individually sustained
They refuse to see
The challenge you face
The person you can be
The goals which you chase
These people open up a corner of our earth
Where friendship is guaranteed
An opportunity for rebirth
Into acceptance and a chance to succeed
The deterrents and obstacles you hurdle everyday
Perhaps the only life you have ever known
The unfair social price you are forced to pay
Perhaps the only side of life you will ever be shown
A place where the impoverished are given tools
Of knowledge and control
So that their life is one which they rule
In which they set and complete their own goals
Some people live in their own world
Absent of compassion
Refusing to see reality unfurled
Instead worrying about what behaviors are in fashion
Allowing the distribution and unearthing of identity
The reconnection with one’s self
A place for serenity
In which one can find themselves
Some ignore the poverty
Which is thrust upon innocence
They first assert sovereignty
Then refuse to show benevolence
A resource rather than a solution
Offering referrals and interaction
Aiding in resolution
Which guarantees satisfaction
Some let their sharp words pierce souls
Some forget to embrace differences
Some disregard part of the whole
Instead making harsh cultural references
A chance where new experiences are profuse
With endless opportunities to obtain new skills
Where one will never suffer from abuse
Only excitement and new thrills
Some are ill-informed
And could benefit from the example of others
Some need to be warned
That every neighbor is a brother
A stepping stone to independence
So that one may walk freely
Both self sufficient and interdependent
Allowing one to live ideally
That friendship should have priority
And ridicule should fall away
Allowing mockery to become the minority
So that assistance and acceptance may be allowed to stay

NAMI vs. NAMI continued
Reaching out to the needy
And their family too
Offering every available resource without being greedy
Providing an opportunity to start life anew
An inspiration
In lives which lack it
Ensuring dedication of aids
Allowing the needy to commit
A corner of unity
From which dignity radiates
Illuminating the faces of the community
With slight steps taken to mediate
A refugee, a home, a chance
A toolbox, a friendship corner
It will cause lives to be enhanced
So that there will be no more mourners
A corner creating hope
Encouraging aspirations
Never allowing optimism to slope
Contributing to a nation
Instead; a cause for celebration
Celebrating independence
Empowering part of a nation
Encouraging interdependence

Holy Family Social Ministry is blessed to share with you this Salt Shaker and our new
“.eighbors in Faith” booklet. Enjoy reading as we share the work of our many ministries!
We give special thanks to the many volunteers who make our social ministries possible. We also wish to give special
words of appreciation to Sue Kemp who works very hard to put these communication materials together. Sue is already
working on the next edition - ready for your enjoyment around the first weekend of July. If you wish to comment on our
Social Ministry efforts, we encourage you to do so! Sue can read reached by email at [email protected] or contact
Jack at the parish office, 921-0580, x119 or [email protected].
