News from The Smithy
A pharmacist, Mr. Noshad Aktar, has been employed by The Smithy to
work one day a week. He will help the GPs with reviewing patients
medication both as repeat prescriptions and after a stay in hospital. He
will also help manage blood pressures and keep an eye on elderly frail
patients who are on a lot of different medications. He will help the
practice to review and monitor practice prescribing for certain drugs
and he will audit practice prescribing.
Lynne Hilton has returned to work at The Smithy as receptionist
NHS111 : All out of hours calls are now directed to NHS111. There is a
new message on the practice ansaphone about this.
The Smithy can now be reached by telephone from 8 am every
morning, Monday to Friday.

We hold meetings on the last Thursday of every month at 5.30pm
The surgery has bought two new machines to help detect infection in a
matter of minutes. One detects inflammation in the body such as
pneumonia and the other detects streptococcus A which
causes tonsillitis.
The Clinical Commissioning Group in Tameside and Glossop is asking all
surgeries to complete a Primary Care Quality Scheme .This scheme
encourages best practice in clinical, administrative, staffing and patient
contact areas of the practice. The scheme involves quite a lot of input
for GPs and staff, planning and implementing new areas of practice
work and revising work they already do.

Day Support at the Independent Living Centre A “dementia friendly”
centre providing a calm environment designed to help older people feel
less agitated and more able to navigate unfamiliar places. A range of
activities available both in Ashton and at Bradbury House in Glossop.
These include arts and crafts, cookery, Tai Chi and computer tutoring.

Falls Prevention and Healthy Lifestyles Chair based exercises at the
centre in Ashton. A falls prevention group to help build and maintain
strength. Walking football sessions aimed at helping men, particularly, to
keep active and prevent social isolation.

Buddying Service Provides support with such things as attending medical
appointments ,shopping and maintaining links with the local community.
There is a small charge for this service.

The local branch of Age UK operates from its centre in Katherine Street,
Ashton and also provides services from Bradbury House, Glossop. People
aged over 50 years are eligible for its services. Age UK has both paid staff
and volunteers working in the organization.

In September Age UK came to our PPG meeting and gave a very
interesting talk about their activities. Below, are the main topics that the
area CEO, Bernadette Ashcroft, talked about and which we thought would
be useful to other patients.
Patient Survey 2016
Handyperson and Garden Maintenance Practical help with small jobs at
fair and affordable prices. Examples are fitting handrails, small plumbing
electrical and joinery jobs, lawn mowing and hedge trimming.
Next year, we will be carrying out another patient survey, asking
questions about several aspects of the surgery and its services.
Information and Advice Support with a wide range of issues including
assistance in claiming benefits, debt advice, housing rights, consumer issues and legal matters.
