Family Trick-or-Treat
October 2016
It’s finally Fall and the cooler weather is upon us. October brings us
thoughts of leaves changing, hot apple cider, carving pumpkins, fall bus
rides, Indians playoff baseball, baking pies, and dressing up for Halloween.
In early October, we have the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi with the
Blessing of the Animals, Cleveland Indians baseball day where
everyone is encouraged to wear their Indians gear to support the playoff run!
We also have the Celebration of Life Gala at the Westin Cleveland
Downtown Hotel on October 21, from 6-11 p.m. A group of residents from
Marymount Place will get to enjoy the night in Downtown Cleveland
celebrating with staff, volunteers, and guests alike.
Our furry friends are invited to our Halloween Dog Show on October 28,
from 3:30-4 p.m. in Assisi Hall. Residents will be choosing the dogs with
the best costumes to win prizes. Make sure to stop by with your dog!
Our annual Family Trick-or-Treat will be held close to Halloween this
year on October 29, from 1-3 p.m. across the entire facility. Families,
staff, and visitors can bring their children to each unit to trick-or-treat and
participate in fun and games. Please sign in at the VSJ front desk when
you arrive and have fun!
Remember to enjoy the season and the good people that surround us.
Take a stroll in the courtyards, see the leaves change, and breathe in the
fresh air. Happy October!
“How beautiful leaves grow old.
How full of light and color are their last days.”

Greetings from the Sisters of St. Joseph, TOSF
October’s fall days bring us reflections about the seasons, probably because fall colors are the
most vibrant of all. Changing seasons can bring to mind the cycles of life and our place in the
greater scheme of things... For instance, has anyone ever asked you, “Who do you think you are
anyway?” The question seems meant to make you feel small and unimportant, doesn’t it?! A more
positive way to approach the question might be to reflect on who we actually are in the greater scheme
of things, like the seasons. We are the result of the creative breath of God alive and active in the universe, and that’s pretty big and also very important!
When being judged before his Crucifixion, Jesus was also asked who he thought he was and “Who do
others say you are?” His accusers saw that Jesus’ place in the greater scheme of things was growing
each day. They wanted to show him how unimportant, how “nothing” he was. He would have none of
it. He knew he was sent by his Father to lead us back to God, die for us, free us from our sins to live
and preach the same Good News he had. The next time we begin to wonder who we are and how
important we are or are not, we must respond in our hearts and in our lives that we are the current
face of God alive and active in the universe, and for that reason alone we are terribly blessed
and important, to God and to everyone around us!
Enjoy the fall colors, and enjoy your important role in
God’s “scheme of things” for YOU!

Myths and Facts About Joint Pain
What are the real facts on what causes, cures, hinders, and helps arthritis and joint pain?
There are more than 50 types of arthritis, but having a swollen, achy joint does not mean you have
one of them. "You need to be properly diagnosed
and treated," says Elaine Husni, M.D., M.P.H., director of the Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Center
Orthopedic and Rheumatologic Institute, at the
Cleveland Clinic, "You may not even have arthritis,
but rather a soft tissue injury or bursitis." Only a visit
to a doctor will tell you for sure.

are in pain, forgo intense exercise and try some
light stretching, or switch to workouts that are less
taxing on the joints, such as the stationary bike or
swimming.

name from the Latin word, “Octo”,
meaning eight.
Fact: More American Presidents were
