Rheumatic Fever is a serious illness which mainly affects Māori
and Pacific children from the ages of 4 – 19 years. It starts with
a sore throat (strep throat) which if not treated could cause
rheumatic fever. Rheumatic fever is an inflammatory disease
that causes joints (elbows, knees, ankles and wrists) to become
swollen. It can also cause serious heart problems.

To stop rheumatic fever from happening children need to get their sore throats
checked straight away. To help parents with this we have set up sore throat
clinics in your area.
This is a free service where your children can get their sore throat checked
and treated by a community nurse. No appointment is
needed just bring your children down to the clinic.
If your child has a sore throat, don’t leave it,
bring them along and get it checked.
