THE HISTORY OF THE
UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL OKLAHOMA
For 126 years, the University of
Central Oklahoma’s bedrock mission
has been developing leaders for
Oklahoma and the nation.
The university began in 1890 when
the Oklahoma Territorial Legislature
created the Territorial Normal School.
Five name changes later, UCO is a
beautifully landscaped campus that
welcomes around 16,500 students each
semester. The university strives to meet
the needs of those seeking a traditional
campus atmosphere as well as the nontraditional student.
Its mission was to educate teachers for
the one-room schoolhouses being built
across the growing territory.
Central’s first students — a class of
23 — met in the basement of
Edmond’s Methodist Episcopal Church.
In 1893, they moved into the school’s
first building, Old North, still standing
today.
Central also welcomes the role of
being Oklahoma’s major metropolitan
university, purposefully combining the
needs of students with those of the
larger area. No longer just an Edmond
campus, Central enjoys a presence in
several areas of the metro, including its
Academy of Contemporary Music at
UCO (ACM@UCO) in Bricktown, its
downtown Oklahoma City campus

with classrooms in the Carnegie Centre
and its CHK|Central Boathouse on the
Oklahoma River. The university also
has begun a relationship with the
Oklahoma City Hispanic Chamber of
Commerce as UCO works to meet the
needs of many in the metropolitan area.
Others notice. U.S. News & World
Report again has ranked Central as one
of the top colleges and universities in
the nation. Central again was the state's
only higher education institution to be
named to the “2016 Great Colleges to
Work For” by The Chronicle of Higher
Education.
As Oklahoma’s third-largest state
university, Central has evolved into six
colleges, including the Jackson College
of Graduate Studies, all with nationally
recognized programs including Nursing,
Forensic Science, Accounting, Physics,
Graphic Design and more. The
university offers 117 majors for
bachelor’s degrees and 70 for master’s.
It's accredited by the Higher Learning
Commission of the North Central
Association of Colleges and Schools.
After 126 years, Central remains an
institution where learning comes first
and where students enjoy personal
relationships with faculty and staff who
are committed to transforming lives.

STUDENT TRANSFORMATIVE LEARNING RECORD (STLR)
Some fall 2016 graduates will be
wearing color-coded cords for achieving
the highest level of transformation in
one or more of five UCO tenets. These
five tenets are represented as following:
Global and Cultural Competencies
(orange), Health and Wellness (green),
Leadership (blue), Research, Creative
and Scholarly Activities (magenta), and
Service Learning and Civic Engagement
(purple).
STLR is an award-winning concept,
developed here at UCO and recognized
by the U.S. Department of Education
with a $7.8 million grant. The program
has gained national and international
recognition for its ability to document
student success with transformative
learning that parallels an academic
transcript, showing mastery in
employability and citizenship skills.
Students build and enhance their
record through submitting STLRtagged assignments, attending STLRtagged campus events, serving in STLRtagged student groups, and/or
participating in outside-of-class
projects. Their levels of achievements
are assessed and validated by a UCO
faculty or staff member.
Through STLR, students graduate
with more than an academic degree.
Students can show they’ve taken their
education to a transformative level,
gaining skills that can be applied in
areas identified as being needed in
today’s workforce and in our
metropolitan communities.
Note: UCO’s sixth tenet, Discipline
Knowledge, is recognized by students
completing their academic degrees.

Class Marshals - fall 2016
Each of the University of Central
Oklahoma’s five undergraduate colleges
awards a graduating senior the title of
“Class Marshal.” These five students
have the highest grade point averages
and number of Central credit hours in
their respective colleges.
The honorees each receive a Class
Marshal stole, signifying the highest
degree of academic excellence. First presented in 1994, the stoles have become
a UCO tradition, later enhanced by the
bronze Class Marshal gown.
The following are the fall 2016
Class Marshals:
Jennifer P. Carter is a Nursing
major with a 4.0 GPA in the College of
Mathematics and Science. She has
served as the treasurer for UCO’s
Student Nurses Association since
January 2016 and was named 2016
Outstanding Senior in Clinical
Nursing. Carter also was named to the
President’s Honor Roll. Originally from
Edmond, Oklahoma, and a graduate of
Edmond North High School, Carter
accepted a post-graduation position as a
neonatal intensive care unit nurse at
Mercy Hospital.
Candice M. Garza is a Special
Education – Mild-Moderate Disabilities
major with a 3.92 GPA in the College
of Education and Professional Studies.
A native of Norwalk, California, and a
graduate of El Camino High School,
Garza now lives in Midwest City,
Oklahoma, with her husband, Shawn,
and children Alyssa, Gage, Ethan and
Alexander. After graduation, Garza
hopes to use her degree to serve students with special needs in her home
district, Mid-Del Schools.
Steven Brian Lanham is a
Marketing and Management major
with a 4.0 GPA in the College of
Business. Lanham is involved with the
Baptist Collegiate Ministry, the
Outdoor Activity Recreation Center
and the Business Advantage – Elevate
Certificate Program. He also is a member of the Sigma Alpha Lambda, Alpha
Lambda Delta, Delta Epsilon Iota and
Delta Mu Delta honor societies. He
received the 2B Leaders, Dr. Ralph H.
and Jessie M. Mengel Endowed, Dr.
Charles and Louise Rickman Endowed
and Business Excellence scholarships.
He has been named to the President’s
Honor Roll each of his eight semesters
at Central. Originally from Fort
Gibson, Oklahoma, and a graduate of
Fort Gibson High School, Lanham
plans to open his own gym after graduation, drawing from his marketing and
management education.
11
Kenzi N. Lockwood is a Criminal
Justice and Forensic Science major with
a 4.0 GPA in the College of Liberal
Arts. She is a recipient of several criminal justice tuition waivers. A native of
Mustang, Oklahoma, Lockwood will
continue her education through
Central’s crime and intelligence master’s
program and is passionate about helping others beyond graduation.
Abigail M. Pappas is an
Instrumental Music Education major
with a 4.0 GPA in the College of Fine
Arts and Design. Pappas is a member of
Sigma Alpha Iota and the National
Association for Music Education
(NAfME) Collegiate. She received the
Presser and Melvin Lee scholarships
and attended the National Convention
for Undergraduate Research. She also
has performed as part of Central’s
School of Music Honors Recital, and
NewsOK.com featured one of her
UCO Chamber Music performances. A
native of Oklahoma City and a graduate of Western Heights High School,
Pappas hopes to become a band director following graduation. She also plans
to pursue a master’s program in conducting and a doctorate in music education.

star-spangled banner
O say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that Star-spangled Banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
