The invitations had been sent; the drama floor was strewn with leaves and flowers; tadpoles swam in the sun as the water beetle dived amongst the pond weed; Harry the Hissing Cockroach waited patiently in his tank and the stick insects, all 48 of them, hid themselves amongst the rose leaves. But would the guests come?! As the sun came out so did the visitors. The Science Quad, usually home to lurking teenagers, was filled with children and their families. Snails and water lice were dipped from pond water and the newly emerging legs of the tadpoles closely inspected. Daisies were counted and bushes shaken as children and adults went on a Minibeast Safari equipped with all the equipment a brave explorer needs. As the three men engage in an ongoing debate over the value of the painting, emotions run high and the conflict escalates to the point of nearly destroying a long-standing friendship. Rather than a debate about the meaning of art, the play’s central theme is the complexities of friendship. Tickets are £5 and can be purchased from the following outlets: Kay Southgate 01953 713108 or from The Book Fountain, Whartons Court, Wymondham. c a l e n d a r june j u ly 1 H a l f Te r m 1 Ye a r 7 C A T S 2 H a l f Te r m 2 Ye a r 7 I n d u c t i o n D a y 3 H a l f Te r m 3 4 H a l f Te r m 4 5 E a t o n Va l e Te a m B o n d i n g f o r A f r i c a Tr i p 5 Fr e n c h Tr i p t o Pa r i s 6F Induction Day China Day 6 Ye a r 7 W e l c o m e Evening 6 N e w I n t a ke Pa r e n t s ’ Evening 1 7 Sports Presentation Evening N e w I n t a ke Pa r e n t s ’ E v e n i n g 2 7 Back to School 8 Junior House Cricket 8 9 Senior House Cricket 9 10 10 N o r m a n d y Ye a r 8 R h i n e l a n d Ye a r 8 11 11 12 12 13 13 14 Y12 Return from Study Leave 14 15 Junior House Rounders 15 16 16 17 Senior House Rounders 17 18 18 19 19 20 20 21 21 2 2 Th e a t r e Tr i p ‘ W o m a n i n B l a c k ’ 22 23 German Music Exchange until 6th July 23 END OF TERM 24 24 2 5 Ye a r 1 1 F o r m a l 25 26 26 27 27 28 28 2 9 Biology Field Course 30 Sports Day Science Olympiad UEA Inset Day B i o l o g y Tr i p t o S o u t h A f r i c a B i o l o g y Tr i p t o S o u t h A f r i c a 29 30 Wymondham High, Folly Road, Wymondham, Norfolk, NR18 0QT (t): 01953 602078 (f): 01953 605518 (e): [email protected]. sch.uk (w):www.wymondhamhigh.norfolk. sch.uk To obtain a larger type version of this newsletter, please contact the school office on 01953 602078 From the Head, Victoria Musgrave M Ay / j u n e 2 0 1 0 MAY/JUNE 2010 Dear Parents/Carers Dear Parents/Carers The weather is better and plans are afoot now for Celebration Days for both Year 11s and Year 13s who are about to leave us and go into a period of study prior to taking their end of year examinations. In this regard, I struck upon the notion of writing to celebrities and asking them to support and encourage our students as they approach the exam period. To date, more than 30 celebrities from the sporting, theatrical, literary and media worlds have sent in signed photographs and they have been scanned and displayed in main reception to encourage our young people. The original signed photographs are being held in an album in reception for people to see. We are thrilled with the response with some of the cast of Eastenders, Coronation Street and the like as well as most of the Norwich City Team and some of the Manchester Utd squad, Sir Ian Botham, Christine Blakey and other famous people. Do come and look and see our wonderful display (there is a smaller version of the poster on the centre pages of this newsletter, and on our web site). We are delighted. Can I wish you all well for the Bank Holiday and give some gentle reminders on dress. The weather Blazers need to be brought to school (though need not be worn around school). The weather can change ‘in a trice’. Students must wear their collars fastened and ties done up but they can wear short sleeved shirts or blouses. Girls must wear at least short ankle socks. No bare legs please. Makeup is still continuing to be a problem with our girls. Can you please check your daughter before she leaves the house. I must send as many as 20 girls a day to the office to remove their makeup. Girls’ shoes need to be proper black leather shoes and not these little soft fabric pumps which keep appearing. Girls’ skirts are far too short and should have no splits in them. These stretchy skirts are not school uniform. Netball Successes Alice Ewer in Year 12 is to tour Australia in July with the U19 netball squad. Bethany Walton and Millie Simpson, both in Year 10, have been nominated to attend County Academy trials in September. Lydia Brownlow in Year 8 and Bethany Palmer in Year 7 have been selected for the area satellite academy. Wymondham Cluster The CLUSTER WEBSITE is available for all parents at www.womondhamcluster.org The site is for information for all in our community. It has a gallery feature with photos from cluster events and there have been a number involving our school recently both musical and artistic. Thank you for your support as ever, V ictoria Musgrave Engineering Summer School I am writing from H-STEM, the education focussed department of Hethel Engineering Centre. We offer a number of different services for schools and students in the region. We are offering a limited number of students the opportunity to come to the centre to take part in a 5 day engineering challenge. The challenges will be held outside of curriculum time and so will not impact on the students studies. The activities are suitable for any student in years 10 to 13 who has an interest in engineering / applied technology. Anyone studying a Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths subject at Key Stage 4 level or above (Yr 10 upwards) is welcome to sign up for any of the following activities. The Engineering Summer School will see students tackling an engineering challenge over 5 days 26th-30th July. The majority of the week will be spent at the Hethel Engineering Centre where the facilities of the Learning Skills Centre will be made available to design, manufacture and test their chosen solutions. There will also be an industry visit (location TBC), last year saw the summer school students have a guided tour of Perenco’s facilities at the Bacton Gas Terminal. You can register your place by contacting Rob Stirling - [email protected] or 01953 859 100. Places are limited so register early to secure your place. Please also contact Rob with any questions you have about the events. I won comfortably at singles all three days. My scores were 6–1, 6–0 on day one, 6–1, 6–0 on day two and 6–3, 6–0 on the last day. This is by far the best I have performed at county cup and I was really proud to come back with such a strong set of results. I won all of my doubles matches as well with my long standing doubles partner who also played this year. Most of the team won all of their matches this weekend meaning that we finished top and we go back up a division for next year. The team spirit was great. I always enjoy the experience but this weekend was something special! Our stalls were ready and waiting for the designers to our companies to show off their wares. Before I could focus my mind on the speech I was later to present to the judges, I was distracted by a delectable array of sandwiches, which Mr Mears was already investigating on everyone’s behalf. So before we began, we thought a spot of lunch might be in order. The agenda for the afternoon consisted of a viewing of the 9 companies’ trade stands, preparing our presentations and being interviewed by the judges. During this time the teams had a chance to try out any last minute adjustments or ideas for their speeches. Kingsley White, the managing director of Wymondham Two, was busy with his group with a run through of their presentation, and a final draft of his still incomplete speech. Our team, on the other hand, were taking advantage of the free time, free food and the radio station that happened to be doing interviews. Then at 7pm it was show time. The lights dimmed, the music faded in and as if from nowhere the guest speaker appeared to start the presentations. Company Wymondham One were first to present from Wymondham High later followed by Wymondham Two who closed the show. Both companies put on excellent presentations, remaining calm and professional, even when the technology failed. This, of course was no fault of ours but as students of Wymondham High we were well practiced in dealing with such eventualities! Wymondham Two showed a high level of understanding of the fluctuations of their fortunes through their accounts. Wymondham One displayed images from past events and told the audience about our goals as a business. Although neither company won an award, we had an excellent evening and thoroughly enjoyed our time at Open and our experience from Young Enterprise as a whole. We wish next year’s prospective entrepreneurs students all the best for the year and the Young Enterprise awards. We hope they have as much fun as we did. I am not one for all the attention and limelight, however I thought I might give it a go and put my team forward to be interviewed first. SNYA Radio couldn’t get rid of the students from Wymondham High for the rest of the night. We were only too eager to share our thoughts on the evening and offer some lively banter which we found most entertaining. Year 10 and 11 students returned from the return leg of their German Exchange with the Hittorf Gymnasium in Recklinghausen, Nordrheinwestfalen. Twenty students and their teachers stayed with their partners and spent a week attending school and visiting the local area. This included visits both above and below ground – from a mine at the world’s biggest coal-mining museum in Bochum to the soaring heights of the towers of Cologne cathedral. A day was also spent in Münster visiting the town museum, cathedral and medieval buildings. A group of Sixth Formers studying A level German went to Berlin to experience first-hand the developments taking place in this exciting city. They also saw Berlin from below ground – in a nuclear bunker built during the Cold War – and from the revolving café at the top of the 365m high Fernsehturm. A programme of visits to museums and monuments brought to life Berlin’s unique history and rich culture. This year was special – it is 30 years since the exchange with the Hittorf Gymnasium started and the local press came along to interview the students. The exhibition was held in the north entrance foyer on Thursday 13th May. The quality of the students’ work this year displayed a real sense of maturity and originality. Students have said it was ‘really amazing to see our work displayed to the whole school’ and ‘hear the positive thoughts’ directed at their final pieces by younger and older students. The exhibition presented in a gallery setting, consisted of oil and watercolour paintings, graphite drawings, dry-point etchings and a large range of students’ A3 sketchbooks. The evening involved an address by guest speaker Clarissa Upchurch who is a local and established artist based in Wymondham. Light refreshments were served to all guests and there was an opportunity for parents to meet staff, the students and view the excellent work based on the Environment and Natural form project and inspired by students’ trip to Wells-next-the-Sea and Holkham beach in October. Continued from the front page... In the Hall visitors shook out their arms and legs as Mrs Haythorpe encouraged them to buzz like flies fleeing the hungry spiders, scrambling over leaves to make their escape. Over in the new Science labs fridge magnets, window hangings, masks and paintings bedecked the benches as children added a creative slant to the day. Those who thought that stick insects looked like sticks had something of a surprise when they came across Ben Palmer’s stick insects. These creatures, longer than a hand, looked ferocious enough to take on anything or anyone. Despite appearances they are gentle animals, more at home munching on privet than people. Over at the Minimonsters Creepy Crawly Road Show visitors young and old got up close and personal with Harry the Hissing Cockroach and his companions. The braver members of the audience were able to handle Harry and friends including an enormous millipede, a slimy African land snail and a slithery snake. The Minimonsters proved such stars that Kate doubled her shows from three to six. For those that preferred their insects on a smaller scale microscopes brought the miniature world of bugs and beasts into focus. However, the sight of a bed bug at x40 magnification did leave visitors scratching at the thought of their bedtime companions! What did the owl have for dinner? Well, judging by the contents of the owl pellets, insects, flies, beetles, mice and other rodents, tasty! What did the visitors have for dinner? A barbecue, generously provided free of charge by Hope Church. And finally, after all the excitement of the day a chance to relax in the shade of a tree and listen to a story read by Rachel from Wymondham Library. The Ugly Bug Ball owes its success to the enthusiasm and generosity of all those involved.
