Spelling Bee Winners By: Lauren Macomber and Haley
GRASS LAKE– Sean
Hickey, Megan Campbell, and Danny Hickey
are the three winners of
the Grass Lake Spelling
Bee. They will be representing their grade, and
the whole school, in the
Jackson County Spelling
Bee.
Sean Hickey, was
nervous during the spelling bee, his strategy for
spelling words is to not
look at the audience. For
spelling bees, Sean likes
to practice with his
brother Danny. Sean
thinks that he will make
it to the second or third
round. He thinks its exciting to represent his
grade. He’s good at
spelling because he practices a lot. He’s only
been in one other spelling bee.
Megan Campbell said
she was a little nervous
but not that much, because there were a lot of
people watching. Megan
practiced at home with
her Mom. She thinks it’s
kind of cool and kind of
scary to represent her
grade because everyone
is counting on her. Her
strategy to remember
words is to break them
down into smaller words.
She hopes that she
makes it to at least the
last round. She’s never
What Do You Think?
GRASS LAKE-We interviewed 17 people with the
following questions:
What is your favorite thing to
do on a snow day?
What are your plans for
spring break?
What are your thoughts about
the Super Bowl?
What is your favorite Super
Bowl commercial?
The most interesting answers from 8th grade came
from Jillian F. Her favorite
thing to do on a snow day is
watch Sponge Bob. Her plans
for spring break are to travel
been in another spelling
bee and she thinks it’s
exciting. She got so good
at spelling because she
reads a lot.
Danny Hickey, he
wasn’t nervous because
he didn’t compete, yeah
he’s that good. He practiced with himself. “It
was pretty easy to win
since no else signed up,”
Danny said. He knew
every word. His strategy
to spell words is to
memorize them. He
hopes to get farther than
the last time he was in
the spelling bee. He was
in one other spelling bee
in 5th grade, he only
made it to the 3rd round.

The two Harbaugh brothers
faced off against each other on Sunday, February 3rd in Super Bowl
XLVII. It was a very intense, violent game. Jim’s team is the Baltimore Ravens (10-6) and John’s
team is the San Francisco 49ers (11
-4-1). To start off the game the Ravens won the coin toss and elected
to kick. The first drive of the game,
the 49ers go 3 and out. For the Ravens first drive, they get a touchdown on a 13 yard, acrobatic reception by Anquan Boldin. The next
drive Colin Kaepernick, the 49ers
quarterback, gets sacked for a loss
of 10 yards on 3rd down. The next
play, David Akers, the 49ers kicker,
By: Jordan Satterthwaite
sails the ball straight through the
uprights to make the score 7-3. In
the second quarter, Frank Gore
fumbles the ball, and the Baltimore
Ravens recover it. Later that quarter, Baltimore fails on a fake field
goal run on 4th down. At the end of
the quarter, Jacoby Jones snatched
the ball in the air, jumped up and
juked 2 people out, and ran into the
end zone for a 56 yard receiving
touchdown. Jacoby Jones returned
the opening 2nd half kickoff 108
yards for a TD (sets record for
longest kickoff return in post season history.) Right after that play,
half of the lights go out in the stadium. The power outage delays the
game for 34 minutes. Right after
the delay the 49ers get their 1st
touchdown on a 31 yard reception
by Michael Crabtree. Near the end
of the 3rd Ray Rice fumbles the ball
and San Fran recovers it, which
leads to a field goal by David
Akers. The score at the end of the
3rd is 28-23 with Baltimore in the
lead, but the 49ers are coming back
scoring 17 points in a span of 4
minutes and 10 seconds. At the start
of the 4th, Justin Tucker kicks
makes a field goal to make it 31-23.
Then Colin Kaepernick runs it in
for a 15 yard TD, they attempt a 2
point conversion to tie it up but it
fails. Sam Koch, the Ravens punter,
does a fake punt to waste time and
runs out of bounds for a safety.
With 4 seconds left the Ravens punt
it and the 49ers try to return it but
they get tackled. The game is over
and the Ravens beat the 49ers 3431. Joe Flacco is the MVP with 287
yards and 3 touchdowns.

Wrestling in Grass Lake by
Cody Nickerson and Cole Hamlin
GRASS LAKE -The wrestling
program goes on for about 9
weeks. The wrestlers on the team
are Cole Hamlin, Cody Nickerson,
Brett Lockridge, Luke Coppernoll,
Zach Forman, Spencer Good, Paul
Grysko, Peyton McEllis, Connor
Bagby, Barret Bagby, Steven Grysko, Jeremiah Brandenburg, and
our coach Travis Rubin. Some of
the things we do in wrestling practice is run a lot, some drills, and
learning some new moves like the
crossface cradle, bow and arrow,
and headlock. At our Michigan
Center meet we got 5th place because they got so many voids because we didn’t have as many people competing. A void is when you
don’t have a person to wrestle him
in his weight class. This years
wrestling team does not have
much people so come out next
year and join wrestling.
The high school wrestling team
earned their way to District Finals
for the first time in over 20 years.
Congratulations to our GLHS
Regional Qualifiers:
Robert Grysko (112) - 3rd in District
Chad Decker (140) - 1st in District
Justin Fratrick (145) - 1st in District
Seth Radabaugh (145) - 2nd in

by: Jackie Corey
GRASS LAKE-Grant is in 7th grade. He’s not sure what he wants to do
when he grows up. Eric Steinacker, Joey Camilleri, and Cole Hamlin
are his best friends. Playing football is his favorite thing to do, that’s
also his favorite sport. Donuts are his favorite food and purple is his
favorite color; because donuts and purple are awesome. He doesn’t
really have a favorite movie, he says he has seen so many and likes so
many he can’t pick a favorite. He’s not sure where he was born, he has
never really asked. He likes Pokémon and Squirtle is his favorite
“Because Squirtle is amazing and I don’t know, I just like Squirtle”.
Ryan’s Restaurant By Haley Frantz and Taylor Harris
GRASS LAKE-Ryan’s Restaurant, on Michigan Avenue in Grass Lake is a good place to eat. When we walked in we were surprised
to see that there was only one other person eating in there. We took our seats and our waitress came over. She was very nice, young
lady. She gave us our menus and our eyes scanned over the multiple choices. We ordered a taco salad and a chicken strip basket
with fries. About 10 minutes later we got our food. The taco salad was crispy and tasty. It had a funny taste like bacon but it was just
the seasoned meat. The chicken was crispy and cooked to perfection and the fries were crispy but not very salty. For dessert we
chose chocolate ice cream, it tasted more like ice than cream. Overall, we recommend that everyone in Grass Lake go visit Ryan’s
Restaurant.

Mama By Kenlee Elliot and Cierra Race
MAMA is a supernatural thriller that
tells the haunting tale of two little girls
that went missing into the woods the day
their parents died. Victoria and Lillie
were found 5 years later by a man walking in the woods. Victoria and Lillie
were taken in by their Uncle Luke and
Aunt Annabel, but soon strange things
start happening around the house. Our
opinion about MAMA is that is it scary
but funny at the same time. It also it surprises you in parts. We rate this movie a
9.5 out of 10. We would recommend this
movie to people who like scary movies
and one not afraid of supernatural things.

GRASS LAKE- Mrs. Stevens is a Leslie High School graduate from 2001 and a Choir teacher and GLMS. It had ALWAYS been her dream to be a choir teacher. She wanted to be a choir teacher since freshmen year of high school. Her
favorite movie is Love, actually. She says if she would ever want an exotic pet, she would want a miniature donkey! Her
favorite color is purple, and she doesn’t have any pets yet. She said, “the best thing that has ever happened to me is when
my baby was born.” She likes to spend time with family on her free time. Her favorite song is Handel’s Water Music,
because it played at her weeding. She enjoys the fall because of the clothes and the weather. She likes all kinds of Italian
foods, and her favorite dessert is Chocolate Moose. If she could change something about society, she would make people
have more love in their heart. Her favorite flower is a rose, and her favorite movie star is Mark Wallburg. Her favorite
sport is football. Her favorite magazine is runner’s world, and her favorite cupcake flavor is white with pistachios. She
leads a busy life by taking care of her 5 month old baby, teaching private piano lessons, being active in her church choir,
and her church bell choir, plus she is a choir teacher at GLMS and GLHS. Mrs. Stevens is an awesome choir teacher, and
she sure does have a busy life!
Will You Be My Valentine?
Every February 14th, candy,
flowers, and gifts are sent to people all over the world. But the big
question is who started Valentine’s
Day?
Valentine’s Day all started way
back when in Rome when Emperor Claudius II, got into many
bloody unpopular and campaigns.
“Claudius the cruel,” Claudius was
called. He had a difficult time getting time soldiers to join his army.
He believed the reason that the soldiers didn’t join was because they
did not want to leave their families
and loved ones. So, Claudius cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome.
Saint Valentine, who was the priest
in Rome in the year 269 A.D., together with his friend Saint Marius,
defied Claudius and continued to
perform marriages for young love in
secret. When Valentine’s actions
By: Skylar Harris
were discovered he was sentenced
to be beaten to death with clubs and
have his head cut off. But while in
prison it is believed that Valentine
fell in love with a girl, a young girl,
who may have been his jailor’s
daughter, who visited him during
confinement. Before his death on
the 14th day of February it is alleged
that he wrote her a letter, which he
signed “From your Valentine.”
Art Work Around The School!
By: Maddie Maynard
GRASS LAKE-Our art teacher, Mrs. Crandell is working hard on each art project for each kid and every project looks great. These

The Baby Angel
Complied by: Jackie Corey
by: Sarah McEllis
Aunt Ranie and Uncle Jeff have
gone away on vacation to Hawaii
for 2 weeks, and Katie can’t help
remembering her real parents, who
died a year ago. Now Katie feels
alone all over again. Then on a
walk in the woods Katie heard
what seems like a bobcat, so she
went to go see what it was and she
finds a tiny baby crying in the
clearing. Katie calls for the baby’s
parents but they don’t respond.
Katie decides to take the baby
home. Katie finds that she loves
the baby. When her friends tell her
they might have found the baby’s
parents, Katie doesn’t know what
to do because she is heart broken.
She has to make a very difficult
decision. What would you do if
you found a baby in the woods and
had to make a decision to give it
up?
The unique feature is that Katie
is writing a story inside the book
itself. The plot is mainly about trying to find baby Fern’s parents. I
loved this book because it is an
easy read and was adventurous
although sometimes it got confusing keeping track of all the characters so you just had to pay atten-
Maximum Security
by Kyle Mietelka
Maximum Security is the third
book in the Cherub series. It is a
story about a 13 year old boy
named James. James is an agent
who goes on missions that could
put his life in danger if he is not
careful. But when Mac, his boss,
gives him a decision to make between a deadly mission or a super
easy mission it is a hard to decide,
but he takes the deadly one.
The author wrote this in present
tense using descriptive words to
tell the reader about how James
and Curtis were going to dodge
security, get weapons, and get
away from that awful prison they
were locked in for two weeks.
I loved this book and it was so
amazing that I read 200 pages in
two days. There was a lot of blood
and battles that kept me wanting to
The Dark Love Story
tion and you can’t get distracted.
One way the author, Suzanne
Weyn, could improve her book is
to have a better beginning because
it got really boring in the beginning. The genre is either adventure
or realistic fiction. I would recommend this book to anyone who
likes compelling books and books
that make you want to continue
reading. A person would need to
like angels and be able to keep
track of lots of characters other
than that I would rate this book a
100 out of 100. I strongly recommend this book!
read more. One more thing I liked
was their smack talk. I thought it
was funny. But one thing I hated
was the cussing.
I recommend this book to people
that can be mature about the cussing and blood and for people that
like adventure and battles. I rate
the book 10 out of 10 because it
was amazing and I just found out
there is a fourth one.

out a huge “Owww!!!”
Then I say, "You think a kiss is going to fix everything you did!” The back doors open, I get out of the van,
my heeled boots hit the hard ground, *crunch*, I’d know that that sound anywhere. I turn around ….OMG!!!!
It’s Taylor’s mansion!! Just like I remember it! I start to shiver from the cool air, I hear a *crunch* behind me

Shoe Brand Survey
by Justice Ruggles, Maddie Maynard, and Jordan Satterthwaite
GRASS LAKE– We did a survey out of 130 people
to see what people’s favorite shoe brand is. People
had the choices of Uggs, Adidas, Nike, Sperry’s,
Toms, and other. The brand with the most votes was
Nike, and the second most favorite was other. Most
of other was DC, Converse, and Sketchers. The
brand with the least amount of votes was Sperry’s,
but Toms only had one more vote. After doing this
survey, we can now conclude that more people’s favorite brand of shoe is Nike.
Mystery Box Questions
By Samuel Moody
Question: Why are commercials so messed up?
Answer: The people who make commercials only want one
thing. Money. That’s all they want is for your attention to go
straight to the television and for you to rush to the grocery
store and buy their product.
Question: Why is school so boring?
Answer: Some people think that school is boring. Well my
response to this question is that it is the person’s opinion to
think that school is boring. My input is school is a place to
learn not socialize.
Thanks to Mrs. Crandell
By Samuel Moody and Kegan Cochrane
There is a beautiful poster above the Mystery box, thanks
to our talented art teacher. The 7th grade Newspaper crew just
wanted to thank Mrs. Crandell and let everyone know this is her
