Where every child matters 17 October 2016 FROM THE DESK of Mrs N Thwaits Term 4: • 11 October – 7 December 2016 Dear Parents and Children. The realization of 38 school days left had varied responses in our staffroom. So much to do so little time: And somehow the agreement was to laugh our way through the remainder of the year. Because laughter • • • • • • • Adds joy and to life Eases anxiety and fear Relieves stress Improves mood Enhances resilience Enhances teamwork Strengthens relationships Laugh Laughter is your birthright, a natural part of life that is innate and born. Staff News: Thank you Mrs Bremmer and Mrs Moopanar for accompanying me on the 3rd Annual What Children Need to Know Conference on Saturday. Teachers from different schools represented, participated in workshops and shared ideas and techniques via a Think Tank. There is no doubt that from the knowledge we obtained on Saturday, “we can begin building stronger and more efficient ways of teaching, managing and creatively inspiring.” Mrs Holloway and Miss Hayes will be representing Charterhouse Schools at a (T.O.M.) Give the children you connect with guidance on how to respond to the water crisis, give them alternatives and suggest accepted behaviours. Draw, paint, talk, sing, write, pray, discuss -let’s all get involved.” Thank you everybody for your input and for the conversations you are having around our water crisis. It’s amazing what our children are willing to share when you engage them in discussion. Take the time to listen to them and please keep talking. Some input from our Junior Primary 2 Johannesburg Mini Council News: A very big thank you to Natalie Castanheira and Nyakallo Peete as their term as Johannesburg Mini Councillors comes to an end. They have inspired our school to reach out to the community through an Easter egg collection, knitting blanket squares, collecting bottle tops which then saw wheelchairs being donated to children in need, collecting money for the SA Guide Dogs Association, supporting Reach for a Dream Slipper Day, collecting mielie meal, supporting the Buy a bag, Give a bag campaign and donating sweets for a CHOC Christmas Party. In Friday’s assembly Natalie and Nyaki shared their experiences as a Johannesburg Mini Councillor. Here are some excerpts from their speeches: Natalie “I am really glad that I decided to become a Mini Councillor because I really do think that it changed me and made me an overall better and more confident person. It definitely made me feel like I made at least a little difference in somebody else’s life. Doing all the charity work that I did also made me more grateful for what I have. If I had a chance to go back and do it all again, I would” Nyaki “Our council song reads: We are the council We do good for everyone Our main aim is to have fun It doesn’t matter what colour, race, age or height As long as we ae all on the same page I will take these humble words with me for the future, for they will remind me that it does not matter what race, age, ability, culture and religion you are, anyone can make a change in someone’s life.” We have pleasure in announcing our Johannesburg Mini Councillors for 2017 – Jenna Davis and Reneilwe Mogohloane. We look forward to working alongside these girls as we continue to support the community. A very big shout out and thank-you to Mrs Davis and Mr Haasbroek for accepting the JMC portfolio. Your support and guidance of our children and this invaluable outreach is so appreciated. 3 • BUY A BAG … GIVE A BAG initiative For 2016, the Mini Council Special Projects team are offering denim school bags personalised with our school’s embroidered logo and lined with traditional African Shweshwe printed fabric. All the proceeds will be used to buy school bags for disadvantaged new learners starting school in 2017. From the Registrar: Parents please note that the 2017 school fees, stationery lists and textbook requirements were issued hardcopy to all children on Friday the 30 September. Copies have also been posted on the d6. Go to Resources then Stationery or Textbook Requirements for 2017. The unpredictability and volatility of the current climate on university campuses necessitated and confirmed the decision that our children, will no longer be participating in the choir festival at the WITS Linder auditorium. We have met with the children and have assured them that their hours of dedication, passion and commitment will not go unnoticed. Our Linder Choir will perform at the Cultural assembly and at Carols Evening. A big thanks of appreciation to Miss Aupiais and her team who so passionately prepared our children for this event. Thank you parents for understanding. 4 Late collection of children Please a big NB Parents…for their safety, our children wait for parents, guardians, lifts and transport at the Primary School Waiting Tree alongside the thatch lapa. The school day ends at 13:30 for the Grade 1, 2 and 3 children and at 13:45 for the Grade 4, 5, 6 and 7 children. All children who are not participating in the extra mural programme or who are not attending Aftercare must be collected at this time. We have far too many children wandering aimlessly around the school. The tuckshop gate is not a collection point any time after 14:00. Children will be walked to the Waiting Tree. We will be contacting parents personally with regards to our concerns. The school extra mural programme is complete by 16:00. Thereafter children know to make their way to Aftercare or the Waiting Tree. We are all supportive of the fact that it is all about our children at Charterhouse School. Their well-being and their safety is a priority. Therefore the following decision has been taken and will apply as from the start of term 4. Children who have not been collected by 16:30 will be accompanied to Aftercare by a staff member. Children will sign in with Teacher Ada, Parents/Guardians will then be contacted. Parents will be billed accordingly. Children returning from extra-mural activities/matches: A staff member will remain on duty with children at the Waiting Tree until 15 minutes after expected/said arrival time back from matches. Thereafter children will be accompanied to Aftercare where the same as above will apply. From Mr Haasbroek and the SPORT DEPARTMENT A copy of the extra-mural timetable is on the d6 for perusal.
