Spotlights Patient and Client of the Month Product of the Month Stress- 7 Ways Around It What Is Adrenal Fatigue April Events Calendar “Today I create a wonderful new day and a wonderful new future.” ~Louise Hay Dear Patient and Friend, Symptoms are our body’s warning system. When you feel symptoms such as pain or illness, do you find the cause of the symptoms or just silence it? A red traffic light. The ringing of a telephone. The gas light in the dashboard of your car. The unmistakable sound of a police car siren. All of these examples are messages that tell us something is wrong, dangerous, or requires immediate action. We learn to recognize the messages of many universal signals and taking the necessary action steps becomes a habit. We STOP at red traffic lights. We answer ringing telephones. We fill up the gas tank when the warning light comes on. We get off the road and let police cars pass. These are simple, well understood warning signals. We know what actions to take in response to them. Why is it that in other areas of our everyday lives, such as health, we frequently ignore signals completely? Maybe if our bodies were equipped with mechanical devices that beeped or set off a siren at the first sign of illness, we would learn to respond quickly to protect our health. Instead, most people ignore pain and symptoms, which are the brain’s way of letting us, know a problem exists and needs to be corrected. We often expect the pain to just disappear or maybe a pill will mask the pain so it doesn’t interfere with our daily activities. The most important way to optimal health is with a healthy nerve system, which is composed of the brain, spinal cord and many nerves. When a spinal vertebra is out of its normal alignment, nerves can be irritated or pinched resulting in an interruption of communication in the nerve system, ultimately resulting in pain and subsequent problems. Silencing or ignoring the body’s warning signals can prevent the detection and correction of the underlying cause of ill health. Act! Don’t just react. Listening more closely to the messages your body is sending can help you to become healthier than ever before. ~Dr. Marla Family of the Month- Chuck and Chris Schram We have enjoyed Hilltop Chiropractic since December 1998 (19 years!). Unfortunately our relationship started when we were in a car accident and Chris was referred to Dr. Marla for treatments. Dr. Marla quickly became our hero helping us with pain management and healing resources. Our children loved visiting the office to be treated by their favorite chiropractor! In turn Dr. Marla became a natural resource for our family to create a lifetime of better health all around. Chris, an interior designer, has helped Hilltop Chiropractic in creating healing spaces. The existing facility is an example of her design work. Chuck is the Regional Sales Manager for Zero Motorcycle an all-electric motorcycle company. Beyond the chiropractic care the Schrams are big proponents of the Ideal Protein weight loss program. In 2010 they both lost 47lbs each before their daughter’s wedding. Currently they are back on the program and have lost a total of approx. 25lbs each since the beginning of the year. They both travel for business the toughest part of the diet is being on the road and staying true to the diet. They each have great tips to share with others on "how to on the road". They have never felt healthier than when they are on this program. They have made this a competition to see who can get to their goal weight before the other which keeps them both very focused and motivated. Dr. Marla has not only become our favorite chiropractor but she is a great friend who has supported our entire family through pain and the daily stresses of life. We highly recommend Hilltop Chiropractic as they are the true meaning of Healthcare Excellence! Products of the Month- 10% off for the month of April! Feeling Stressed? Stress is a normal part of life. Every day, we’re faced with stimuli, called stressors, which can elicit the body’s “fight or flight” response, setting off a cascade of physiological reactions and resulting in emotions ranging from mild to intense. But while occasional stress is natural and even healthy, chronic or acute stress can be harmful. Please take a few moments to take this stress assessment to discover your body’s response to situations you perceive as stressful. Print your results when you are finished and bring them in to the office so we can help you to a less stressful life! http://www.metagenics.com/stress Stress… Seven Ways Around It! In today’s busy society, stress is a modern fact of life. The demands placed on us at work are increasing by the day. The desire for a better family life is greater. Money always seems to be an issue. How many times have you said, “If there was only one more hour in each day I would be able to get everything done?” We have all experienced the ugly and unhealthy side effects of stress. Stress has become a serious health hazard. If you don’t get a handle on it quick, stress can take a huge toll on your physical and mental well-being. Here are seven simple ways to turn stress into your ally and not your enemy: 1. Regular Chiropractic Adjustments… Spinal nerve stress caused by a vertebral subluxation is a dangerous mechanism that damages nerves, weakens health and depletes energy stores. Many people may walk around with a painless subluxation for years without knowing it. Doctors of chiropractic are professionals who specialize in correcting vertebral subluxations, the cause of spinal nerve stress, which leads to increased energy, improved health and rejuvenated body. 2. Take Time for Yourself… devote at least 20 minutes each day to participating in activities that bring you pleasure. Some examples may be gardening, fishing, cooking, playing with your children and listening to your favorite music. 3. Deep Breathing… During a stressful event, take a moment to perform 5 slow and deep breaths inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth. Most adults, when stressed tend to stop breathing fully. Deep, diaphragmatic breathing sends an impulse to the brain to relax. 4. Reduce Caffeine Intake… Eat more whole, natural foods that provide the body with unlimited amounts of energy. Our bodies are like high performance machines. If we want to fly like a jet, we must fill our bodies with jet fuel. 5. Stay Calm and Respond Positively… When a stressful moment occurs, practice staying calm. Stress responses may be so ingrained in our nervous system that we create stress patterns when we automatically go into stress mode. Practice every day to recognize these patterns and replace them with a positive response. 6. Get Enough Sleep… Adequate sleep speeds up your body’s ability to heal and rejuvenate as well as strengthen your immune system. Seven to eight hours of sleep each night is adequate for most adults. 7. Laugh Every Day… At least 15 minutes of laughter every day is essential to help the body heal and reduce stress. Laughter comes very easy, it costs no money and most importantly, it is contagious. What Is Adrenal Fatigue? Adrenal fatigue is a condition where your body and adrenal glands can’t keep up with the tremendous amount of daily stress many people experience. Sometimes misunderstood as an autoimmune disorder, adrenal fatigue can mimic some precursors to other common illnesses and disease. Wellness doctors and practitioners believe that an episode of acute stress or prolonged, chronic stress can cause adrenal glands to become overloaded and ineffective. They believe that adrenal fatigue can be caused by: Stressful experiences like death of loved one, divorce or surgery Exposure to environmental toxins and pollution Prolonged stress due to financial hardship, bad relationships or work environment, and other conditions that entail feelings of helplessness Negative thinking and emotional trauma Lack of sleep Poor diet and lack of exercise What happens when the adrenal glands stop producing hormones efficiently? Every bodily function is affected, and as adrenal hormone levels shrink, even the normal “get-up-and-go” you get from them disappears. Adrenal fatigue symptoms include: Difficulty sleeping Irritability Morning fatigue or trouble waking up Fatigue Decreased libido Cravings for sugar Depression Hair loss Muscle weakness Weight gain Poor focus Muscle tension Bone loss Inability to tolerate high-carb/potassium Inflammation foods unless paired with fat and protein Increased allergies If you’ve experienced any of these adrenal fatigue side effects, take heart, for there are now many natural ways to treat and support your adrenal system. Steps to Heal Adrenal Fatigue Avoid things like: caffeine, sugar and sweeteners, processed and microwaved foods, hydrogenated oils Add these into your diet: o Coconut o Olives o Avocado o Cruciferous vegetables (cauliflower, broccoli, brussels sprouts, etc.) o Fatty fish (wild-caught salmon) o o o o o Chicken and turkey Nuts (walnuts and almonds) Seeds (pumpkin, chia, flax) Kelp and seaweed Celtic or Himalayan sea salt The last and most important key to restoring your adrenal function is to heed your mind and stress needs. Pay attention to your body! 1. Rest when you feel tired as much as possible. 2. Sleep 8–10 hours a night. 3. Avoid staying up late and stay on a regular sleep cycle — ideally, in bed before 10 p.m. 4. Laugh and do something fun every day. 5. Minimize work and relational stress. 6. Eat on a regular food cycle, and reduce your caffeine and sugar addiction. 7. Exercise (even moderate exercise and walking can help). 8. Avoid negative people and self-talk. 9. Take time for yourself (do something relaxing). https://draxe.com/3-steps-to-heal-adrenal-fatigue/ Ready to Lose Weight? Start our exciting program today!
