AP CHEMISTRY SUMMMER PACKET Welcome to AP Chemistry! The goal of the Advanced Placement Chemistry course is to meet the objectives of a good college general chemistry course. Students in the course should attain a depth of understanding of fundamentals and a reasonable competence in dealing with chemical problems. The course should contribute to the development of the students’ abilities to think clearly and to express their ideas, orally and in writing, with clarity and logic. The course differs from the typical first year high school chemistry class in the kind of textbook used, the emphasis on chemical calculations and mathematical formulation of principles, and the kind of labwork carried out by students. (College Board, Advanced Placement Program) You will need to secure the following course texts in order to successfully complete the complete this course: th Chemistry by Zumdahl and Zumdahl, 7 edition ISBN 978-0-618-52844-8 Princeton Review Guide for AP Chemistry (new edition to be purchased in the fall) All students are expected to complete the summer assignments prior to the first day of school! Assignment 1: Email Me (15 points) [email protected] th Email me with the following information by Friday, August 4 : Brief Introduction Why are you taking AP Chemistry? What do you think it will take (on your part) to be successful on the AP Exam? Please feel free to email me at any time with questions on the summer assignment. I will be out of town periodically so please allow a few days for me to respond. Assignment 2: Prerequisite Knowledge and Skills (50 pt quiz to be given the first week of class) You are responsible for everything listed on the “Prerequisite Knowledge and Skills” list in this packet. You should expect a quiz on your knowledge of these terms, skills, ions on the first or second day of class. Assignment 3: Prerequisite Basic Mathematical Skills It is imperative that you be proficient in the use of dimensional analysis (also known as the factor-label method). No credit will ever be given for answers that do not show clear work including units. The “Dimensional Analysis” worksheet is due on the first day of class for a 15 point grade. Assignment 4: Read, outline and complete the study questions for Chapters 1 and 2 from the main text. All outlines should be typed. The outline and study questions are to be handed in on the first day of class for a 60 point grade. It is NOT ACCEPTABLE to “copy and paste” anything from the internet. Doing so will result in a zero for the assignment. Students should be prepared for us to briefly review these chapters before a test covering Chapters 1 and 2. This test will be given during the first five or six days of class. AP CHEMISTRY LIST OF PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS To Memorize: Table 1.2 on pg 9—metric prefixes Density of water Table 2.4 on pg 59—Common Type II ions Table 2.5 on pg 52—Common Polyatomic Ions List of diatomic molecules for writing reactions Names and symbols of all s-and p-block elements (as well as common d-block metals) To Be Able to Do: Metric conversions Dimensional Analysis Determine the number of significant figures in a measurement Calculate and report answers with the correct number of significant figures Temperature Conversions Name covalent compounds Name ionic compounds Name acids Balance equations Electron configurations for atoms that “follow the rules” Terms/Concepts to Understand: Kinetic-Molecular Theory of Matter Isotopes Lewis Structures Pure substances vs mixtures Design of the Periodic Table, group names, charge values, general properties Mole Avogadro’s number Types of reactions: synthesis, decomposition, single replacement, double replacement, combustion Covalent bond vs ionic bond Molarity Molar mass—how to find it for elements and compounds Simple hydrocarbon names—alkanes, alkenes, alkynes Name_____________ AP CHEMISTRY SUMMER PACKET DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS PROBLEMS Use dimensional analysis (including ALL units) to solve each problem please. 1. How many nickels would be equivalent to a twenty dollar bill? 2. How many hours are in a week? 3. How many revolutions does the hour hand on a clock make in a year? 4. Find the number of centimeters in 1.00 x 102 yards. 5. Determine the number of meters in 1.00 mile. 6. 7. The speed of light is 1.86 x 105 miles per second. How many meters will light travel in 1.0 second? Calculate the number of seconds in a year. 8. A light year is the distance that light travels in one year. Determine the number of miles, meters, and kilometers in one light year. 9. A single layer of gold atoms forms a surface whose dimensions are 1.0 x 103 angstroms by 1.0 x 103 angstroms. 1 angstrom = 10–10 meter. a) What is the area of this surface in square angstroms? b) What is the surface area in square centimeters? 10. The units of the chain system of measure, used by surveyors, are as follows: 7.92 inches = 1 link 100 links = 1 chain 10 chains = 1 furlong 80 chains= 1 mile The distance of the Kentucky Derby, a classic horse race, is 1.25 miles. How is this distance expressed in furlongs? 11. How many meters cubed is equal to a centimeter cubed?
