Niagara Niagara Niagara Niagara “ “ In Good Company ANNUAL REPORT 2014-2015 “In Good Company” Message from the President and the Executive Director CMHA Niagara is committed to continuous quality improvement. We have not been resting on our award of Exemplary standing with Accreditation Canada. We have continued to improve our processes and procedures as demonstrated by our Balanced Scorecard. Customer Service and Quality scored 88.05% which is a 17 point increase since our inaugural scorecard three years ago. Our waiting time for case management, for example, has been reduced from over 6 months to, on average, 6 weeks. Results like these do not happen spontaneously and are the product of our Governance, Management, Staff and Clients working together. CMHA Niagara 15 Wellington Street St. Catharines, ON L2R 5P7 905-641-5222 [email protected] www.cmhaniagara.ca Partnerships have always defined us and are a critical component of all our services. A recent listing identified over 25 agencies that have formal or informal working relationships with our various programs. This past year we welcomed: the Brain Injury Community Re-Entry Niagara, working with us in Niagara Falls to provide a regional centre for Transitional Housing; the YWCA, a partner in our Mental Health Coach service; and the Niagara Regional Police, our principal partner with the Mobile Crisis Rapid Response Team. Our Branch understands the desperate need for mental health services in Niagara. We are a founding member of the Niagara Mental Health and Addictions Charter which allies with our vision. As an organization, we make the most of limited resources to provide efficient and quality services with the support of our clients. Our newly formed Client Program Advisory Committee is an example of our commitment to client-centred care. Working collaboratively within our health care system and, most importantly, with our clients, we know we are: “In Good Company”. Sincerely, Rashmi Biswas, President of the Board George Kurzawa, Executive Director VISION CMHA Niagara is a catalyst for an innovative, inclusive and recovery-based community. MISSION 2 CMHA Niagara furthers its vision by serving individuals holistically to develop and strengthen CMHA Niagara Annual Report 2014-15 their place in the community. Programs and Services COMMUNITY SUPPORT SERVICES Community Support Services offer regular visits from our case managers for individuals in the community to help address the everyday challenges of living with mental illness. Some recent changes to this program involve the implementation of a short term case management model to help reduce our waiting list, and we are also continuing to build upon the success of the Illness Management and Recovery Program (IMR) that provides the personalized skills and strategies for those with mental illness that will support them in their recovery. INDIVIDUAL RESIDENTIAL SUPPORT In this program, individuals who have been diagnosed with serious mental illness and have a history of homelessness are helped with accessing and maintaining an apartment in the community. With the support from case managers, they build their life skills and are linked to community resources. We also partner with the Niagara Region Mental Health Services, collaborating with a team of mental health nurses, to provide comprehensive service delivery to our clients. IMMEDIATE SERVICES Immediate Services incorporates programs providing short or no waiting time, for services to individuals or family members who are in distress and/or seeking mental health information. The various programs include Urgent Support Services, which has offices in St. Catharines, Niagara Falls and at the St. Catharines Hospital site; Walk-In Counselling, which operates one day a week in Niagara Falls and Fort Erie; Brief Counselling and Intake and Information Resources. The impact of these programs has been phenomenal, with reductions or eliminations of waiting lists for brief counselling. SAFE BEDS PROGRAM The Safe Beds Program provides 24/7 support to individuals who are in crisis as an alternative to hospitalization. This program was originally established in 1995. In 2012, we formed a partnership with Bethesda Services to increase our capacity to service individuals with a Dual Diagnosis and to fill a gap that existed for crisis services in the Developmental Sector. This partnership has proved to be a huge success and is emerging into best practice, resulting in the probability of similar partnerships developing in crisis services across the province. JUSTICE PROGRAM Individuals with mental illness who have been charged with various offences are supported through the court system, and with the difficult transition back into the community. Our case managers provide counselling and support to people who are in custody. We partner with Probation and Parole and offer group support. 3 WALK-IN COUNSELLING This year we expanded the Walk-In program to Fort Erie. This successful model was recently highlighted at the CMHA Ontario Conference and is being adopted by other Branches in Ontario. VOLUNTEER PROGRAM Volunteers play an integral role in our agency. Our Community Engagement Program involves volunteers participating in social and recreational group activities with clients to increase interaction and engagement. Our Social Connections Program has volunteers connecting with clients to mutually navigate the transition out of more formal CMHA services. Additional volunteer opportunities include our Speakers Bureau (where someone with lived experience shares their story), fundraising, bingos, administrative support and membership on our Board of Directors. Our very successful, volunteer-run, Women & Wellness event helps to fund our Niagara Falls and Fort Erie Walk-In Clinics, while promoting greater mental health awareness in our community. This year a large complement of volunteers will lend their time and talent to make a success of our first Ride Don’t Hide event in the Niagara community. All of our volunteers receive extensive training and support. For example, our strong partnership with the Distress Centre provides the opportunity to be trained in active listening. We are extremely proud of, and grateful for, our volunteers and everything they do. SERVICE STATS 2014-15 2013-14 LONG-TERM SERVICE (registered clients): Case Management and Counselling up to two years 1028 900 BRIEF SERVICE (registered clients): Crisis and Short-term Counselling usually less than one week 1651 1274 FACE-TO-FACE VISITS and telephone call interactions with individuals not registered in services with CMHA 7192 7240 4 CMHA Niagara Annual Report 2014-15 URGENT SUPPORT SERVICES Urgent Support Services was started in April of 2013 to provide an alternative to hospital visits for individuals experiencing mildto-moderate mental health, addictions or situational crises. Urgent Support Services is available at two community locations (St. Catharines and Niagara Falls) and is accessible in person, without an appointment. Feedback from clients show that 76% reported the service has prevented them from attending the hospital to deal with an urgent concern and 98% would seek the service in the future. SPECIALIZED EMPLOYMENT SERVICES For more than 20 years, the realwork Program has been working with individuals who experience mental health concerns and other disabilities as barriers to employment. The team meets with individuals in several regional locations to discuss and collaboratively identify each individual’s needs to meet their employment goals. A Return to Work Action Plan is then mutually developed to identify action steps to be taken by each party, in order to address the person’s needs and to obtain meaningful employment in the community. We benefit from our funding through the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, as well as our strong and collaborative partnerships with several employment agencies including Port Cares, Business Education Council, Employment Help Centres, Employment Solutions, Job Gym, The Hope House, Salvation Army, YWCA Employment Services and several regional shelters. DIALECTICAL BEHAVIOUR THERAPY (DBT) This year we participated in the delivery of a comprehensive DBT program. This researchproven program has been very successful for individuals with complex mental health issues. The program includes group and individual treatment, telephone coaching and consultation. 5 Balanced Scorecard Canadian Mental Health Association, Niagara Branch Expenses 2014-2015 Year 46.2% Wages $3,463,991 8.6% Employee Benefits 645,768 1.7% Capital Assets & Amortization 122,712 8.9% Supplies & General 667,682 22.4% Funding Directed to Community Partners 1,681,918 12.2% Occupancy 100% Customer Service and Quality 3 88.05 % 3 Use of evidence-based clinical interventions has dramatically improved, indicating that the advanced training has been successful. 3 Completion of crisis plans and Ontario Common Assessment of Need has increased to 65% and 80% respectively, but we are still not at the level required to demonstrate full compliance with standards. 3 100% Key Success: 3 We are meeting all of our financial targets. CMHA Niagara Annual Report 2014-15 7 WOMEN & WELLNESS Supporting Family Mental Health Ride Don’t Hide is an annual community bike ride hosted by the Canadian Mental Health Association in celebration and support of mental health for all. CMHA Niagara will be holding its very first Ride Don’t Hide event on Sunday June 21st, 2015 as part of the national movement. We hope to raise awareness and decrease stigma around mental illnesses that affect one in five Canadians – only a third of whom receive treatment. The funds raised will help build mental health in Niagara through the programs and services that we provide. During the last 5 years, 1700 Niagara women have attended Women & Wellness and $120,500 has been raised. This annual educational fundraiser helps people better understand mental illness through hearing the experience of others and sharing their own stories; generous sponsors and attendees provide funds; businesses in Niagara give products and services, all of which support Canadian Mental Health Association, Niagara. For the last 3 years, money has been given to set up and expand the Walk-In Counselling service we offer in Niagara Falls and Fort Erie. Women & Wellness is volunteer-driven. At the 5th event on February 19, 2015, fifty people helped manage the experience of 500 women who came to Club Italia and 14 amazing individuals spent a lot of last year planning this outstanding evening. During the years we have brought remarkable women to speak about many challenges of mental illness: Jan Wong and her experience with workplace depression, Karen Liberman whose long journey of hope, recovery and wellness inspired us and Rona Maynard, formerly with Chatelaine, who believes change is in the wind. The 6th Women & Wellness will be on February 18, 2016. Mark your calendars. Thank you to our Supporters! Many individuals, organizations and businesses have supported the work of CMHA Niagara Branch. Their generosity both financially and with in-kind services and products has allowed us to enhance or extend programs and services.
