Students were recently sent a letter from Dr. Sheppard via their CCHS email account explaining the
small tuition increase CCHS will implement in August, 2013, and the increase in fees effective summer
semester, 2013. You may also view that letter on the CCHS Information Portal in the student resources
section under student information (http://online.carolinascollege.edu/mod/page/view.php?id=8741).
Please contact Dr. Sheppard or Dean Bradshaw if you have questions.
Student of the Month
Congratulations to Tracey Stone, our March Student of the Month. Tracey
is a top notch student in the classroom. She asks good questions and
shows a real interest in her studies. Additionally, she serves as a
“student review” leader for BIO 102. Students who attend her review
have commented on her excellent grasp of the material and have given
her an outstanding recommendation. Tracey is not only academically gifted but also generous with her time, actively helping other students.
Thanks for all you do to make CCHS an excellent place to learn.
Tracey Stone
Construction Update
Construction on the energy plant behind the college will be coming to an end in March. Current plans
are that the V Parking Lot will once again be available for use beginning on Monday, March 18. This
means that students will again have access to park at the college after 3:30 p.m. on weekdays and all
day on weekends. As a result of your feedback, there will be a new sidewalk next to the energy plant
along Loop Road – no longer will you have to walk behind large trees, as this sidewalk will be placed
curbside providing easy access to the building and keeping pedestrian traffic out of the street. Watch
for e-mail updates as to when this sidewalk will be completed.
Page 1 Open Forum with President Sheppard
Your voice matters. Your opinion helps. Dr. Ellen Sheppard, President of CCHS, conducts open discussion sessions
once a month. Have a great new idea? Or a suggestion? Dr. Sheppard will be available Monday, March 18, 10:30 11:15, in room 137.
If you are unable to fit this into your schedule, send her an email - [email protected]. Coffee and cookies served! At a recent Open Forum the subject of jobs c ame
up. Sheppard shared with student the shared CCHS/CHS responsibilities in employee recruitment.
Safety First!
All students, faculty and staff are strongly reminded to walk in designated crosswalks only! It has been reported to CHS Security that individuals have been observed crossing streets in areas other than designated crosswalks and walking in the street. We do not want anyone injured, so please use designated crosswalks only, do not use the street for a walking path and be vigilant of your surroundings especially when you are about to cross a parking lot entry or a street!!
CHS Security has asked us to remind faculty, staff, and students to make sure your ID badge is displayed above the waist, facing outward
and visible upon entry to the college and any CHS facility!
In November of 2012 an Active Shooter Awareness Training session was conducted by CHS for the faculty and staff of Carolinas College.
The DVD presentation and the power point slides are now posted on the information portal for faculty, staff, and student viewing. This is
an excellent presentation and we strongly urge all students (and faculty/staff that have not yet seen the presentation) to view the training presentation in its entirety. This material is timely, informative, and extremely valuable to all of us!
Emergency Notification Test
We will conduct a test of our emergency response communication system on April 11 at 10:00 a.m. At this
time a blast voicemail message will be sent to the primary and secondary phone of all students, faculty
and staff. This test is conducted twice each academic year to ensure that the emergency response
system is functioning properly. Once tested, this system is only activated in accordance with the college’s Emergency Response Plan and at the discretion of select members of the campus’ Emergency
Response Team. For more information regarding the emergency response communication system and
other safety information at Carolinas College, please contact Hampton Hopkins in student services.
Carolinas College now uses text messaging for emergency communication with students. To initiate this service follow these 5 easy
steps: 1) Log on to Sonis-Web using your existing e-mail & PIN; 2) Click on “Update Bio” link at top of page; 3) Enter your cell phone
number & your provider; 4) Check the “Text Me” Flag; 5) Click “Submit” at bottom of page. While there, check to make sure all of your
phone numbers, as well as well as your address, are correct. We will test the Sonis text messaging system on March 27, so please enter
the information above to participate.
Rising Nursing Seniors: Interested in More Job-Focused Clinical Time?
Many current and past nursing students have requested additional clinical time in specific areas of interest. The clinical elective course
was developed to provide you with that additional clinical time. The clinical elective offers a for-credit clinical experience of your choice,
just prior to NUR 202. It’s your chance to try out a new unit, to reinforce clinical skills, and possibly to get a foot in the door to be considered for a job. Learn more about the CCHS Clinical Elective and put in your request for preferred units at our info session on March 14 at
11:30 a.m., room 157. Can’t attend? Email Susan Bass at [email protected]. Standard tuition rates and the CHS
loan programs apply.
Compliance Corner - Medication Reconciliation
CHS has begun using a system-wide safety initiative - medication reconciliation. Each time a patient visits a physician's office, the emergency department, a clinic, or is admitted as an inpatient, medicine history is reviewed as a component of their care. All prescription and
non prescription drugs are listed in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR), and therefore are able to be updated with each subsequent
medical visit; allergies are reviewed and updated well. Patients are asked to bring all medications with them to the physician visit in any
care venue for a comprehensive review for dosage, use, and compatibility so changes can be made to the EMR. Before the patient
leaves the visit, or is discharged from the hospital, the medical reconciliation provides them with an up-to-date list of mediations and
with clear instructions on how to take them.
Page 2 Service and Celebration
All students, their families, faculty, and staff of CCHS, plus alumni, are invited to participate in a spring Day of Service on Saturday, April
6. The activities begin at 9:30 a.m. at the college. Service options include making sandwiches for Crisis Assistance Ministry; helping
with painting, sealing woodwork, and small chores for Florence Crittenton; landscaping maintenance at Freedom Park (i.e., mulching,
weeding ), planting flower boxes/landscaping at the college, children’s activities such as making cards for children Levine’s Children’s
Hospital, and assembling “pencil packs” for Classroom Central . There is something for everyone and the tasks are not strenuous. At
11:30 everyone’s invited to a cook out to celebrate our service, our #1 status, and to meet, mingle and get to know your fellow classmates better. Join in the Service and Celebration.
HIPAA Reminder: Be Careful with Clinical Paperwork!
Why are Clinical Assignments Under Such Scrutiny? Clinical paper assignments (such as weekly clinical evaluations, for example)
should not contain patient identifiers. Despite our best efforts, there is always the chance that this type of assignment can sometimes
contain patient sensitive information. For this reason, any clinical-related assignment should only be submitted via uploading to the Information Portal.
Why is the Information Portal Preferable to Using Email? The Information Portal is a secure site that is password-protected. Sending
this type of assignment via email is an unsecure way to send this information. Remember: emailing is the equivalent of sending a postcard through snail mail: anyone who really wants to read it can figure out how to do so!
What Happens if I Email a Clinical-Related Assignment? At the College we take HIPPA policy very seriously. Emailing clinical assignments is considered a Level I HIPPA violation. A level I violation is considered an accidental, unintentional violation. This requires counseling and reeducation of “what to do” and “what not to do”.
What if I Have Trouble Uploading my Assignment to the Information Portal and I Don’t Want My Assignment to Be Late? If this
happens to you, notify your instructor that you are experiencing issues with uploading. In general, as long as we have an understanding
that you are making the effort to submit on time, you and your instructor can negotiate an extended submission time. Bo Clarke is a
great resource to help you with any technical difficulties you may have with uploading to the IP.
Can You Remind Me Again What NOT to Include on Clinical Paperwork? The easiest way to remember this is to print a copy of the
College Confidentiality Statement and put it with your clinical folder or notebook. The Confidentiality Statement contains a specific list of
patient identifers to avoid. You can locate it on the IP, under student resources/student information. Remember the bottom line: if someone saw your assignment, would it be possible for them to put two and two together and figure out who your patient is? If so, you’ve included too much information.
Thank you for helping keep our patients’ information secure. If you have questions, please contact Trish Campbell, our Facility Privacy
Officer, at [email protected] or 704-355-2661.
Simply the Best!
On Monday, February 25, students, faculty, and staff gathered to celebrate another
year of excellence. For the second year in a row, CCHS has been ranked the No. 1 twoyear college in the nation and the No. 6 college in North Carolina. The rankings released by StateUniversity.com - analyze data from the top 2,000 colleges and universities in the nation and are based solely on mathematical comparisons of key statistics, including student/faculty ratio, student retention and test scores. “This ranking is
an affirmation of the academic excellence of our students and of the commitment of
our faculty and staff,” said Ellen Sheppard, President of CCHS. “We are thrilled to be
recognized for what we try to accomplish every day - making our students our top priority.” In recognition of the #1 status, students were provided a free badge reel at the
celebration. If you have not received one, you can stop by student services or the business office to pick one up.
At left: Nursing Students Lexi Ivey and Kayla Boutross celebrate CCHS being
named #1 for the second year in a row.

We Need You!
The College has a rich history of alumni interaction and participation. One of the many aspects of alumni involvement with the college is to help fund the endowment. Last year, we blew our goal
away by raising over $15,500 – and that was all because of our
AMAZING student volunteers! Let’s do it again in 2013. Each evening March 18, 19 and 20, the college needs students from each
program to volunteer with the alumni phone-a-thon. It is a great
opportunity to help the college, participate in a worthy cause, and
win PRIZES! Each evening, there will be dinner at 5:00 p.m., a training session at 5:30 p.m., and calling from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. To volunteer, go to the information portal and click on the business office
information page, click on the phone-a-thon photo and enroll – or - contact Susan Patterson
([email protected]) or Jill Powell ([email protected]) for details.
Don’t miss out on being a part of this great tradition!
