As of the 6 April 2016, the government are
set to make the microchipping of dogs
compulsory. To comply with this legislation all
dog owners must:

Have their dog microchipped and
registered on one of the authorised
commercial databases available;

Register the details of any new owner
before they sell or give the dog away;

Keep their contact details up-to-date on
the microchip databases.

The process of inserting a microchip takes
just seconds, with a tiny implant, similar in
size to a grain of rice. Like a vaccination,
or injection it is inserted under the skin at
the back of the neck, where it will remain
for the entire lifetime of the animal.
Each microchip contains a unique code, which
makes the animal easily identifiable.

PLACES FOR PETS THIS SUMMER
Boarding kennels are probably the most
commonly used holiday option but they are not
necessarily ideal for every dog. Some dogs, for
example the old or the timid, might find it a
particularly stressful experience. It is important
to consider if your dog would be happier in a
home environment with family, friends or a pet
sitter.
We can offer owners advice on reducing the
stress caused by a change in environment.
Finding a kennel
When visiting a kennel ask yourself:
Are the kennels clean and dry?
Do the animals look clean and happy?
Has the kennel asked for proof of vaccination? If
not, your dog may be at risk of disease.
Many kennels will require that your dog has
been vaccinated against kennel cough. This is
an infectious disease which can not only be
caught from kennels but from any area where
an infected dog has been. We strongly advise
vaccination, even if the kennels do not.
KIDNEY CONCERNS
RENAL FAILURE IS THE
MOST COMMON CAUSE
OF ILLNESS AND
DEATH IN ELDERLY
CATS!
We hope your pets enjoy their holiday as much
as you enjoy yours!

HOT CARS
Chronic renal failure is incredibly
common in cats over the age of 7 years.
The disease develops over a prolonged
period of time, however it is often not
recognisable until at least 75% of the
kidney function is lost. The kidneys filter
waste products from the bloodstream,
however when they don’t function
effectively toxins can build up in the
blood, making the cat very ill.
OVER THE AGE OF 10
1 IN 3 CATS HAS SOME
DEGREE OF RENAL
FAILURE
Is there an up to date licence from the local
council?
Is there adequate insurance if your pet needs
emergency care?
DOGS DIE IN
Signs can include weight loss, drinking
more, urinating more, lethargy,
depression, dehydration, vomiting, poor
coat condition and loss of appetite. If
you have noticed any of these symptoms
tell your vet immediately as investigation
may be required.
*Don’t leave a dog alone
in a car.
*Dogs pant to cool down.
In hot stuffy cars they
can’t cool down enough.
*Leaving a window open
or a sunshield will not
keep the car cool
enough.
*You can be prosecuted
for leaving a dog in a hot
car.
*If you have to go out
please leave your dog at
home.
Diagnosis of kidney disease can involve
urine tests, blood tests and blood
pressure measurements, and whilst
there is no cure for the disease, the best
form of treatment, to improve quality of
life and prolong the life of your cat is a
simple change of diet, although there
are also medications that can be given to
help maintain the kidney function.
Please ask your vet about Renal Diets
available for your pets.
Heatstroke can be fatal! If
dogs show any signs of
heatstroke move them to
a shaded, cool area and
ring your vet
immediately.
SUMMER DANGERS
Please be aware your party
this summer could have
hidden dangers for your
pets.
PUPPY PARTIES
The summer months are, without a doubt, the most popular time of year for people to
purchase new bundles of fur, however here at Oathall Veterinary group we hold year
round puppy parties for your new arrivals- great fun for all involved.
Alcohol and childrens toys
are not the usual suspects
but can be potentially fatal in
animals.
ALCOHOL IN DOGS
A 12 kg Cocker spaniel
knocked over and broke a
bottle of port. When the owner
returned the dog was drunk
with ataxia.
1 hour after admission at its
local vets the dog was
comatose with respiratory
depression (down to 12
respirations per minute) and it
developed hypothermia with
congested mucous
membranes.
Our puppy parties are aimed at puppies who are between first and second
vaccinations and have yet to go out on the ground in public places, and at these
sessions we aim to encourage appropriate socialisation and behaviour towards
other dogs. Unsocialised pups can often become snappy towards other dogs
because they have not learned how to communicate appropriately with them;
our puppy parties aim to reduce the risk of your pup from displaying such
behaviour.
Our puppy parties are run every Thursday from 7.15pm – 8.15pm (approx) and
are only for our registered clients. The parties are held in our waiting room,
which we thoroughly disinfect first so all the pups can play on the floor.
Book at reception and socialise your new arrival, here at Oathall, this summer!
The dog was managed
overnight with warming
measures, IV fluids and
supportive nursing and had
thankfully recovered after 8
hours.
NERF GUN FOAM IN CATS
NERF foam (Non-Expanding
Recreational Foam) is made from
a solid, spongy cellular material.
A 12 year old cat presented 3 days
after ingestion of a dart from a
NERF gun that it had found in the
garden.
It was severely dehydrated with
severe vomiting and elevated liver
enzymes. It was given fluids and
medication but unfortunately died
on day 4.
The cause of death was thought to
be a ‘blockage’. The material itself
is unlikely to have had any
inherent toxicity.
HOT CROSS DOGS
Whilst we all hope for continual sunshine over the summer months, as far as
our dogs are concerned even mild weather can be enough to cause heat stroke
(hyperthermia) - a raised temperature caused by prolonged exposure to
increased heat.
Because dogs do not have the ability to sweat they do not cope as well with
high environmental temperatures as we do. Whilst they pant in attempt to
lower body temperature, this is only an efficient method of cooling when air
temperature is lower than that of body temperature.
Heat stroke can cause excessive panting, vomiting, bright red gums, weakness,
and in very extreme cases seizures. If you are concerned about any of the
above this summer, please don’t hesitate to contact the surgery.
Ways to avoid a case of heat stroke include exercising dogs at cooler times of
the day such as early morning or evenings, and try not to exert them, ensure
that your dog has constant access to plenty of cool drinking water and cool,
shaded areas if spending lengthy amounts of time outside, and NEVER leave
your dog in the car- opening the windows does very little to aid the cooling
process.
PET TRAVEL SCHEME
It’s always a good idea to plan ahead for the summer if you are taking your Pet abroad.
A Pets Passport can be used for dogs, cats or ferrets travelling to other EU countries, and certain other
non-EU countries (For other countries owners are advised to contact DEFRA for the latest rules and
regulations for export: 08459335577).
TO OBTAIN A PETS PASSPORT:
A microchip is implanted by a nurse or a vet.
A rabies vaccination is given by a vet (from 12 weeks of age).
The passport can then be issued.
Pets must wait 21 days from the rabies vaccination before travelling.
The mandatory treatment for tapeworms is still in place but will apply to dogs only. This must be
done every time the pet re-enters the UK not less than 24 hrs and not more than 120 hours (1-5
days) before its scheduled arrival time in the UK. The drugs used must be ones approved by
DEFRA and recorded in the EU Pet Passport or the third country official veterinary certificate.
6) Rabies vaccines should be boosted according to the rules set by the country/countries visited.
7) It is also advisable to find out parasites your pets will encounter in the countries you travel
to/through and treat them while they are abroad to prevent illness or death.
8) Rules for pets travelling to and from countries outside the EU are different and vary from country
to country. Always check with DEFRA before travelling abroad just to be on the safe side. The
number to call is 0370 241 1710.

THE PANDA MADE ME DO IT!!!!!
Hi my name is Sophie White and I am one of the Registered Veterinary Nurses working here at Oathall Veterinary Group.
This year along with my boyfriend I am taking part in the Thames Path Challenge. The Thames Path Challenge is a 100k
th
(62.5 mile) walk along The Thames Path on the 12 September. We will be starting in central London and ending in Henley
on Thames, Oxfordshire. The long distance walk should take on average 24hrs to complete. We’re doing this walk to raise
money for a fantastic charity WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) and for a new personal challenge and we will be using
their motto as above “The Panda made me do it”.
We would be truly grateful for any sponsorship you may be able to manage and there are two ways you can do this either fill
in the sponsorship forms at the practice or go to my just giving page:
www.virginmoneygiving.com/team/whitebearandbrownbear
Thank you very much, I do truly appreciate it.
Kind regards and big bear (panda) hugs Sophie
