The groundhog is another name for
woodchuck. They are rodents and are the
largest animal in the squirrel family. These
solitary mammals sleep through the winter or
hibernate in burrows. They dig their burrows
and tunnels underground. Groundhogs are found
in North America in forests and fields.
Groundhogs are mostly herbivores and eat
plants. They eat grass, seeds, leaves, flowers
and fruits. Sometimes they will eat eggs, small
animals or insects. They eat as much as they
can to fatten up before hibernating for the
winter. They usually hibernate from October to
March.
Groundhogs are famous for predicting
spring. We celebrate Groundhog Day on
February 2.
