This document describes the Oxley family in Wells, Somerset. These the early ancestors of this Oxley
family. The Oxleys in Wells are all one family descended from Daniel Oxley, born about 1625, and
Thomasin.

Timothy Oxley (c.1623). Possibly the brother of Daniel. He died in 1680 and was buried at St.

Cuthbert on the 2nd October.
Daniel Oxley (c.1624). He was born in about 1624. He married Thomasin (or Thomson) in about

1649. Thomasin died in 1667 and was buried at St Cuthbert on the 7th November. It looks as though
Daniel remarried in about 1676 but the later children John, William and Joseph were still listed as the
children of Daniel and Thomasin; there is some confusion here.
Daniel had several children.
Daniel Oxley (1650-1707). The son of Daniel and Thomasin. He was born in Wells on the 12th

May 1650; the family were living in Tucker Street. He married Mary in about 1676. Daniel died in

1707, at Chamberlain Street, and was buried at St. Cuthbert on the 7th May. Mary died in 1710, at

Chamberlain Street, and was buried at St. Cuthbert on the 8th February.
Daniel and Mary had several children.
Daniel Oxley (1677-c.1687). The son of Daniel. He was born on the 24th June 1677 in Wells.

He had probably died by 1688 as another Daniel was born then.
Thomas Oxley (b.1678). The son of Daniel. He was born in Wells on the 2nd September

1678.

Timothy Oxley (1679-1730). The son of Daniel. He was born in Wells on the 16th March 1679.

He married Sarah Mapson a widow on the 17th June 1711 at St. Cuthbert.
He may be the

Timothy Oxley mentioned in a Wells Manor Lease dated the 20th March 1718.
He died in

1730 and was buried at St. Cuthbert on the 25th May.

Sarah died in 1719, at Chamberlain Street, and was buried at St, Cuthbert on the 13th June.
Timothy and Sarah had one child.
Timothy Oxley (b.1712). The son of Timothy and Sarah. He was born on the 29th June

1712. The family were living in the High Street.
Mary Oxley (1682-1754). The daughter of Daniel and Mary. She was born in Wells on the 23rd

January 1681/82. She may be the Mary who married Daniel Broadrip on the 26th December

She may be the Mary Broadrip who died in 1754 and was buried at St.

Cuthbert, Wells on the 5th June 1754.
William Oxley (1683-1750). The son of Daniel and Mary. He married Mary Bartlett on the 24th

December 1702 at St Cuthbert Wells.
Mary died in 1705 and was buried at St. Cuthbert on
the 7th January. William was remarried in 1706 to Elizabeth Smith, spinster, on the 16th May at

St. Cuthbert. He may be the William who was at Chamberlain Street when he died in 1750. He

William had several children.
Mary Oxley (b.1704). The daughter of William and Mary. She was baptised in Wells on the
20th March 1704. The family were living at Tucker Street. She may be the Mary who married

Philip Stride on the 7th July 1722, by banns, at St. Cuthbert, Wells.
John Oxley (1707-1739). The son of William. He was baptised in Wells on the 15th June

1707. The family were living in Tucker Street.

He may be the John William Oxley who as apprenticed in 1721.

He may be the John Oxley who married Elizabeth Fry the 2nd September 1732 at St.

Cuthbert. She may be the Elizabeth Oxley, widow, who was at Queen Street when she died

in 1753. She was buried at St. Cuthbert on the 10th October 1753. John may be the John

Oxley who died in 1739, at Priest Row, and was buried at St. Cuthbert on the 20th March.
John and Elizabeth had several children.
John Oxley (bd.1733). The son of John and Elizabeth. He was baptised privately in

Wells on the 5th January 1732/33 and received into the church on the 22nd January.
The family were living at Church House. He was probably the John who died in 1733 and

was buried at St. Cuthbert on the 22nd February. This is probably the undated burial, at

St. Cuthbert, in the period 1730-1739 on the 22nd February. The family were living in
Church Henge (?House).
Elizabeth Oxley (b.1734). The daughter of John and Elizabeth. She was baptised in

Wells on the 1st January 1733/34. The family were living in Church House. She may be
the Elizabeth, spinster of this parish, who married John King bachelor, on the 7th May

1763, by licence, in Wells.
Arabella Oxley (1735-1736). The daughter of John and Elizabeth. She was baptised
privately in Wells on the 11th March 1735 and received into the church on the 1st April

1736. The family were living in Church House. Arabella died in 1736 and was buried at

St. Cuthbert on the 18th October.
John Oxley (1737-1825). The son of John and Elizabeth. He was baptised in Wells on

the 8th December 1737. The family were living in Church House. He was probably the
John who married Mary Biss of St. Andrew's, Wells, on the 5th May 1765 at St.

Cuthbert.
John was at Lawpool lane when he died in 1825, age 77. He was buried at St. Cuthbert

on the 8th April 1825.
Mary died in 1803, address High Street, and was buried at St. Cuthbert on the 22nd April

1803.

Sarah Oxley (b.1740). The daughter of John and Elizabeth. She was baptised in Wells

on the 19th May 1740. The family were living in Church House.

She may be the Sarah who married Robert Ball on the 14th November 1758, in Wells.
Elizabeth Oxley (b.1708). The daughter of William. She was baptised in Wells on the 26th

September 1708. The family were living in Tucker Street.

1731. James was working as a Gardener.
Anne Oxley (b.1710). The daughter of William. She was baptised in Wells on the 20th

William Oxley (b.1712). William Jun. The son of William. He was baptised in Wells on the

28th October 1712. The family were living at Tucker Street.
William had several children.
Joseph Oxley (1737-1747). The son of William. He was baptised privately in Wells on
the 27th July 1737 and was received into the church on the 31st July 1737. The family

were living in Chamberlain Street. He was at Chamberlain Street when he died in 1747.

Mary Oxley (b.1738). The daughter of William. She was baptised in Wells on the 15th

October 1738. The family were living in Chamberlain Street.
Daniel Oxley (b.1739). The son of William. He was baptised in Wells on the 4th

William Oxley (1741-1828). The son of William. He was baptised in Wells on the 28th

July 1741. The family were living in Chamberlain Street. He may be the William living in
Old Almshouse, who died in 1828, age 87, and was buried at St. Cuthbert, Wells on the

Timothy Oxley (1745-1746). The son of William. He was baptised privately in Wells on
the 17th August 1745 and was received into the church on the 31st October 1745. The

family were living in Chamberlain Street. He was at Chamberlain Street in 1746 when

he died. He was buried at St Cuthbert on the 25th May.
Mary Oxley (1746-1747). The daughter of William. She was baptised in Wells on the 2nd

December 1746. The family were living in Chamberlain Street. She may have died by
1748 as another Mary was baptised then.
Mary Oxley (1748-1752). The daughter of William. She was baptised in Wells on the

12th March 1748/49. The family were living in Chamberlain Street. She may be the
Mary at New Street in 1752 when she died and was buried at St. Cuthbert on the 5th

July.
Daniel Oxley (1713-1778). The son of William. He was baptised in Wells on the 22nd

November 1713. The family were living at Tucker Street. He may be the Daniel who died in

1716, at Tucker Street, and was buried at St. Cuthbert on 10th May.
Daniel Oxley (1717-1718). Possibly the son of William. He died in 1718, at Chamberlain

Street, and was buried at St. Cuthbert on the 4 May 1718.
Sarah Oxley (bd.1719). The daughter of William. She was baptised privately in Wells on the
10th December 1719 and received into the church the same day. The family were living in

Chamberlain Street. She died in 1719/20, at Chamberlain Street, and was buried at St.

Cuthbert on the 14th February.
Sarah Oxley (b.1720) The daughter of William. She was baptised on the 19th December

1720 in Wells. The family were living in Chamberlain Street. She may be the Sarah who

married William Babbs on the 2nd June 1741, in Wells.
Ann Oxley (b.1686). The daughter of Daniel and Mary. She was baptised in Wells on the 14th

June 1686. She may be the Ann who married John Anstis on the 13th February 1710 at St.

Cuthbert, Wells. John was born in 1691 in Wells.
John and Mary had several children; John Anstis (b.1711), Thomas (b.1712), Ann (b.1713),

Mary (b.1716) and Daniel (b.1717).
Daniel Oxley (b.1688). The son of Daniel and Mary. He was baptised in Wells on the 24th

March 1688. Daniel had a son Daniel.
Daniel Oxley (1717-1778). The son of Daniel. He was baptised privately in Wells on the
16th December 1717 and received into the church on the 29th December. The family were

living in Chamberlain Street. He may have married Mary. She may be the Mary, living in
Church House, who died in 1741 (perhaps after the birth of Sarah) and was buried at St.

Cuthbert on the 16th June.
He may be the Daniel who later married Jane Isgrove by licence in Wells on the 18th August

1742. He may be the Daniel who was at Tucker Street when he died in 1778. He was

buried at St. Cuthbert on the 3rd July.

Daniel had three children.
James Oxley (1735-1809). The son of Daniel. He was baptised on the 1st of January

1735, at St. Cuthbert. The family were living at Old Almshouse. He may be the James
who was living in the High Street and died in 1809. He was buried on the 3rd December

at St. Cuthbert.
Thomas Oxley (b.1738). The son of Daniel. He was baptised on the 25th September

1738, at St Cuthbert. The family were living at Bagger Street.
Sarah Oxley (1741-1746). The daughter of Daniel. She was baptised on the 5th April

1741 at St. Cuthbert. The family were living at Church House. She was at Priest Row in

1746 when she died and was buried at St Cuthbert on the 6th April.
William Oxley (1657-c.1670). The son of Daniel and Thomasin. He was baptised in Wells on the

7th October 1657. The family were living in Tucker Street. He may have died by about 1670 as
another William was born in 1671.
Thomasin Oxley (b.1659). The daughter of Daniel and Thomasin. She was born in Wells on the

1st November 1659. The family were living in Tucker Street. Thomasin(e) died in 1661 and was

buried at St. Cuthbert on the 19th December.

John Oxley (b.1668). The son of Daniel. He was born in Wells on the 8th November 1668.

William Oxley (1671-1741). The son of Daniel. He was born in Wells on the 2nd April 1671. He

married Sarah Bartlett on the 7th December 1696 at St. Cuthbert. .He may be the William in

Chamberlain Street who died in 1741 and was buried at St. Cuthbert on the 9th May.
William Oxley (1697-1712). The son of William and Sarah. He was born in Wells on the 4th

July 1697. He may be the William (probably a child), who died in 1712, at High Street, and

was buried at St. Cuthbert on the 23rd March.
Daniel Oxley (1702-1766). The son of William and Sarah. He was born in Wells on the 8th

November 1702. The family were living in the High Street. He was probably the Daniel who
married Mary Rogers in Rodney Stoke on the 9th January 1725. Rodney Stoke is a village a few

miles North West of Wells. He may be the Daniel who died in 1766 and was buried at St.

Cuthbert, Wells on the 4th February 1766.
Daniel and Mary had several children.
Mary Oxley (1726-1729). The daughter of Daniel and Mary. She was baptised in Wells on

the 9th April 1726. The family were living in the High Street. She may have died by 1730 as

another Mary was baptised then.
John Oxley (1727-1808). The son of Daniel and Mary. He was baptised in Wells on the
22nd September 1727. The family were living in the High Street. He may be the John who
married Mary Anstis on the 26th August 1751. He may be the John who was in the High

Street when he died in 1808. He was buried on the 7th April at St. Cuthbert.

Ann Oxley (b.1752). The daughter of John and Mary. She was baptised in Wells on the

12th July 1752. The family were living in Priest Row.
William Oxley (b.1755). The son of John and Mary. He was baptised on the 16th March

1755 in Wells. The family were living in East Wells.
Mary Oxley (b.1758). The daughter of John and Mary. She was baptised in Wells on the

22nd January 1758. The family were living in Priest Row.
Sarah Oxley (b.1760). The daughter of John and Mary. She was baptised in Wells on the

23rd March 1760. The family were living in Priest Row.
She may be the Sarah who married Richard Budge on the 6th November 1780, in

Wells.
Susanna Oxley (1763-1771). The daughter of John and Mary. She was baptised in Wells

on the 25th July 1763. The family were living in Priest Row. She may be the Susanna
who was at Triston Row when she died in 1771. She was buried at St. Cuthbert on the

20th August.
Mary Oxley (1730-1788). The daughter of Daniel and Mary. She was born in Wells on the

26th July 1730. The family were living in the High Street.
She may be the Mary who married Robert Westcoat on the 17th April 1747 in Wells (an

alternative date is the 11th April 1748). She may be the Mary Westcoat who died in 1788

and was buried at St. Cuthbert, Wells on the 16th August.
William Oxley (b.1733). The son of Daniel and Mary. He was born in Wells on the 7th

January 1732/33. The family were living in the High Street.
Sarah Oxley (b.1704). The daughter of William and Sarah. She was born in Wells on the 13th

August 1704. The family were living in the High Street. She may have died by 1710 as
another Sarah was christened then.
John Oxley (1708-1785). The son of William and Sarah. He was born in Wells on the 14th

March 1707/08. The family were living in the High Street. He was a Cordwainer (Leather
worker). He may be the John who married Elizabeth Church at St. Cuthbert, Wells on the 3rd

June 1735.
He was probably the John who made a Will, probate 1785/7, in which he left lands to a son

Joseph and a house in Tucker Street to a daughter Mary.
Will of John Oxley - Probate 1785
This is the last Will and Testament of me John Oxley, the Elder, of Wells in the County of
Somerset, Cordwainer.
I give and devise all that Close or piece of Orchard and Garden Ground called Farthing acre
situate and being near the road or way leading from Wells aforesaid towards Wilton and [ piece ]
of the Manor of Wells [ --- ] with the appurtenances unto my son Joseph Oxley his Executors
Administrators and Assigns for and during all my Estate term and Interest therein. But it is my

will that my Executrix herewith named shall have and receive the rents and profits thereof and
for her own use and benefit for and during one whole year next after my decease.
I give and devise the messuages or tenements situate and being in Tucker Street in Wells
aforesaid with the appurtenances and now in the several occupations of John [Evans] and
Joseph [Coleman] unto my daughter Mary Bright the wife of George Bright her heirs, Executors,
Administrators and Assigns.
And all my Goods and Chattels and personal estate whatsoever and wheresoever I give and
bequeath unto my daughter the said Mary Bright whom I do make and appoint sole Executrix of
this my Will.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed and set my hand and Seal this fifteenth day of
March in the year of our Lord 1785.

Joseph was mentioned in his father's will of 1785 and was left lands and a house in Tucker
Street. Joseph and Joan had several children.
Joseph Oxley (1760-1799). The son of Joseph and Joan. He was baptised on the 23rd

March 1760 at St Cuthbert, Wells. The family were living in the High Street. He may be

the Joseph who died in 1799 and was buried at St Cuthbert on the 26th November.
James Oxley (1762-1813). The son of Joseph and Joan. He was baptised on the 25th

October 1762 at St Cuthbert. The family were living in the High Street. He married
Elizabeth in about 1792.
Elizabeth was in St John's Street when she died, age 46, on the 12th June 1809 and was

buried on the 16th June at St Cuthbert.
. James was still at St John's Street when he

died, age 49, on the 8th April 1813. He was buried on the 11th April at St Cuthbert.

Sarah Oxley (b.1738). The daughter of John. She was born in Wells on the 19th September

John Oxley (1740-1794). Possibly the son of John and Elizabeth. He was born in Wells on

the 2nd March 1739/40. The family were living in the High Street. He married Mary Boyce

John died in 1794, at Beggar Street, and was buried at St. Cuthbert, Wells on the 27th

William Oxley (1746-1747). The son of John and Elizabeth. He was baptised on the 21st

Mary Oxley (1749). The daughter of John and Elizabeth. She was baptised in Wells on the

25th Feburary 1749. The family were living in the High St. Mary married George Bright,

batchelor, by Licence, on the 4th June 1775 at St Cuthbert. She was mentioned in her
father's Will of 1785/87 and left a property and land in Wells.

George (1757-1807) died, age 50 (or possibly 70), on the 6th November 1807.
Anne Oxley (b.1751). The daughter of John. She was baptised privately in Wells on the 8th
May 1751 and was received into the church on the 22nd September 1751. The family were

Sarah Oxley (b.1710). The daughter of William and Sarah. She was born in Wells on the 3rd

Joseph Oxley (b.1674). The son of Daniel. He was born in Wells on the 16th March 1673/74.
