Their generous spirit is manifested in the charitable work that touches the lives of so many in the community. Jim Avino has owned Avino’s Italian Table for Jim Avino six years. He has always loved the restaurant business. Having spent all of his early adult life learning the business, it seemed natural that in 1984 he opened his first restaurant, The Bellport Chowder House. His passion lies in creating delicious new Italian dishes. His parents were of Northern and Southern Italian descent which has given him a well-rounded perspective for all styles of Italian food. Jim grew up in Blue Point, graduated from Bayport-Blue Point High School, Suffolk Community College and Dowling College. He lives in East Patchogue and has been married to his wife, Nancy, for 35 years. They have three children, Meredith, Michael and Melissa. Jim has always been a member of the Bellport Chamber of Commerce, where he has served in all positions. He is currently the Chamber Historian. He has a strong sense of community and supports many local organizations, including the Eastern Farmworkers, Bellport Football, and Playcrafters. Avino’s annually hosts a Chili and Soup Cook-Off to benefit Mercy Center Ministries. A favorite event is the “Toys for Tots” party, which provides many wonderful gifts for our Lighthouse Mission friends every year. Jim has supported Brookhaven Hospice by participating and providing food for the annual cocktail party. Nancy served on that committee for many years and is also a past chairperson. Brookhaven Hospice provided Rose Avino, Jim’s mom, with a wonderfully caring and supportive team during her illness. They were so compassionate and gave the whole family care and understanding. Nancy graduated from Hartwick College and is an RN who has worked at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital and Stony Brook for the past 20 years. She is currently a Quality Manager at Stony Brook Medical Center. Meredith is the manager at Avino’s. Merri graduated from Johnson and Wales University, and after working in New York City, was convinced by her parents to come home and enter into the family business. She and Jim have a successful partnership because they truly enjoy working together. Merri is the face of Avino’s and her dedication to the business is evident. Merri is currently the Vice President of the Bellport Chamber of Commerce. Michael Avino and his girlfriend Ashley Curreri live in Blue Point. Mike graduated from Oneonta College and works for MTV as a Live Events Coordinator. Ashley works for Northwestern Mutual. Melissa Avino graduated from Pace University, lives in Brooklyn, and works in New York City as a Senior Purchasing Coordinator for Berry Jewelry Company. It isn’t unusual to stop by Avino’s and find Mike or Melissa behind the bar. The Avino family believes in the power and strength of small, local businesses. They believe that it is vital to give back to the community. Whether you see them at a Gateway event or working at their church, the Avino’s enjoy living and working in their community.
