From the Depths of the Oceans to the Edge of the Universe Science in Paradise 2013 National Annual Meeting, Honolulu Pre- and Post- NAM Optional Tours Private Garden Tour – Tues, May 28, 1–4 pm Visit three of Honolulu’s loveliest private homes and their gardens with members of the Garden Club of Honolulu, led by ARCS Foundation, Honolulu Chapter member Margery Ziffrin. Enjoy refreshments of punch and cookies surrounded by tropical plants and trees and spectacular views with your knowledgeable hosts. The tour can accommodate up to 20 participants. Cost estimate is $40 per person. Kaena Point Hike – Sat, June 1, 1 pm departure from Hilton Hawaiian Village for 5- to 6-hour excursion Tour the westernmost tip of O‘ahu, which has one of the last intact dune ecosystems in the main Hawaiian Islands, with Marilyn Dunlap of the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s Pacific Biosciences Research Center, and ARCS Scholar alumna Lindsay Young, who will talk about the resident monk seals and nesting Laysan albatross. Wedge-tailed shearwater and spinner dolphins may be present. See why ancient Hawaiians believed the point was the jumping-off place to the next world. The 5-mile round-trip hike is relatively level along a (usually) dry coastal area with no restroom facilities. Hikers should be in generally good health, wear good walking/hiking shoes and bring hats, sunscreen, sunglasses, lots of water and personal snacks. Cameras are highly recommended and binoculars are useful. If weather threatens to be rainy, a poncho would be useful. The tour can accommodate up to 10 participants. There may be minimal cost for transportation. Big Island Volcanoes – June 1–3 ARCS Foundation, Honolulu Chapter board members Patty Lee, a retired University of Hawaii at Manoa geologist, and Patricia Cooper, University of Hawaii at Manoa graduate dean, will provide experts’ insights on the youngest and still growing Hawaiian island. Tentative itinerary: June 1: afternoon flight to Hilo, check into our hotel, have a quick dinner and visit Mauna Kea with a University of Hawaii astronomer, who will lead an orientation program at the 9,000-foot Hale Pohaku, escort those who are up to the altitude on a visit to the summit and, and direct star gazing at Hale Pohaku before returning to Hilo. Dress in layers—the summit gets chilly. June 2: Check out of hotel at 9:30 am, drive to Volcano Village and check into Kilauea Military Camp. Visit the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory and Kilauea Visitors Center. Depending on what is happening with Kilauea Volcano (January 3, 2013 marks the 30th anniversary of the current eruption), visit Kilauea Caldera, Halema’uma’u Crater Devastation Trail, Thurston Lava Tube, Kilauea Iki, Chain of Craters Road, Devils Throat, the Sea Arch and ocean entry area. June 3: Continue exploring the volcano in the morning. Return to Hilo after lunch for return flight to Honolulu or other points. This excursion can accommodate up to 20 participants. Cost estimate is $425–$500, not including meals.
