JOHNSON & RECONSTRUCTION - Clashed with Congress - Readmitted states after they ratified the 13th Amendment - Pardoned former Confederate officers, allowing them to get land back - Radical Republicans disagreed with the President LOUISIANA GOV’T POSTWAR - Many former Confederates elected to the legislature - Republican party gained strength (made up of free people of color, former slaves, and northerners) - Governor Wells, a unionist, was elected in 1865 ** 13th Amendment: got rid of slavery - Was impeached by the House of Representatives and ** 14th Amendment: made was within 1 vote in former slaves U.S. Citizens the Senate from being removed ** 15th Amendment: gave black males the right to vote FREEDMEN - Wants: families to not be separated, education for children, no whipping, to not have to work on a plantation they were a slave at - Moved to towns which caused conflict - Black Code: written because movement of former slaves frightened the whites - the code restricted the actions, movement, and conduct of the freedmen - also controlled the work force - Freedmen had to sign contracts for working FREEDMENS BUREAU & RIGHTS - Bureau: established by the Federal Gov’t - Purpose… to provide food, clothing, and basic medical care - Established schools - Freedmen gained rights when the 14th Amendment was passed
