A Few Fun Facts About The
July 4th Declaration
As we enter the hot summer months, taking good care
of your dog is important. Keep your canine companions
healthy by remembering these basic tips:
Heat:
✓ When pets are outside, be sure they have plenty of
fresh water and access to shady areas.
✓ Don’t leave your dog inside a car on hot days.
✓ Exercise your dog only during the coolest times of the
day.
✓ Watch for sunburn. Dogs are susceptible to sunburn
just like people, especially those with short hair, pink
skin, and white hair. Limit their exposure when the sun
is the strongest and apply sunblock to ears and nose 30
minutes before going outside.
Lyme Disease:
✓ Get your pet a yearly Lyme disease vaccination from
your vet.
✓ If you have a furry dog, comb him with a fine-toothed,
light-colored comb. Inspect the comb for ticks, which
are often tiny and easy to miss.
✓ Inspect all areas, including the ears and face.
✓ If you find a tick is attached to the skin, pull it out with
tweezers.
✓ Wash the area with soap and water. Monitor
it for signs of infection. If your dog gets
Lyme disease, a rash shaped like a bull’s
eye will appear at the site three to 32 days
after he’s been bitten.
✓ Watch for symptoms like sudden, severe
pain, lethargy, fever, loss of appetite,
and depression.
You probably know that the Declaration of
Independence wasn’t actually signed by delegates from all
13 colonies until August 2, 1776. But did you know these
other interesting facts about our nation’s founding
documents? They come from the U.S. National Archives
and Records Administration website:
✦ The original Declaration wasn’t written on ordinary
paper, but engrossed (a process of preparing an official
document in a large, clear hand) on parchment—an
animal skin that’s stretched and treated with lime to
create a strong, enduring document.

Dog Days Of Summer
✦ The copy on display in the National Archives in
Washington, D.C., is one of 26 “Dunlap Broadsides,”
printed on paper on the night of July 4, 1776. Twentyone are owned by American institutions, two are held
by British institutions, and three are in the possession
of private owners.
Pr
✦ On the bottom left corner of the original Declaration is
a handprint whose origins are
unknown. Attempts to clean
the handprint would damage
the document. Also, the back
of the signed Declaration
bears the words “Original
Declaration of Independence,
dated 4th July 1776,” upside down at the bottom of the
page.

Most of us spend a lot of time at the computer and that
puts us at risk for injuries to the neck, back, and arms. Pay
attention to these elements to ensure you’re working
safely:
✤ Chair. Use a chair with a seat height, angle of recline,
and tilt that can be adjusted.
✤ Shoulders. Set your shoulders in a relaxed position,
rather than hunched up or rounded.
✤ Feet. Place your feet flat on the floor (preferable) or
flat on a footrest.
✤ Wrists. Hold your wrists as straight as possible, rather
than angled sharply up, down, or to the side.
✤ Screen. Place the monitor directly in front of you, so
you look straight at it, rather than having to twist your
neck toward the screen.
✤ Distance. Position the monitor 18 to 28 inches from
your eyes. Set the height of the monitor so that its top
is approximately an inch below your eye level.
✤ Mouse. Be sure your arm is supported when using the
mouse.
✤ Lights. Adjust your lighting to reduce glare on your
work surface or computer monitor.

It’s A Young Moon After All
Most of us complain about never having enough time,
but often the reason is that we waste the time we do have.
Consider these root causes that rob you of precious
minutes and hours throughout your day:
✦ You don’t plan your day. Without a plan for tackling
your workload, you’ll end up reacting to other
demands instead of concentrating on your priorities.
✦ You keep a messy work space. Organize your desk
and work area so you don’t lose time looking for what
you need. Some studies say that a person with a messy
desk can waste up to an hour and a half a day
searching for things, or getting distracted by what’s
lying around.
✦ You cheat yourself from sleep. Lack of sleep
increases your stress level and intensifies feelings of
lack of control.
✦ You don’t take a break. Taking lunchtime outside the
office or a brief breather from the day recharges the
batteries and keeps you more productive.
Pr
How old is the moon? Apparently a little younger than
previously thought, according to the Science Daily
website. A team of scientists from France, Germany, and
the U.S. developed a sort of “geologic
clock” that doesn’t rely on standard
measurements of radioactive decay
to determine age, but instead uses
computer simulations of the early
solar system in relation to known
amounts of iron-rich elements in the
Earth’s crust, left over from the space
collision that created the moon. All this allowed the
researchers to determine that our moon was probably
created about 4.5 billion years ago, about 95 million years
after the formation of our solar system, almost 70 million
years later than most scientists had previously estimated.

Trapped!
An elderly golfer showed up at the course one
morning without a partner. The pro agreed to play 18 holes
with him, and asked him what kind of a player he was.
“Not too bad, I guess,” the old duffer answered. “But I
have a little trouble getting out of sand traps.”
They played a close game, and the older gentleman
managed to avoid sand traps until they reached the 18th
hole. His shot to the green dropped into the trap, and he’d
have to sink his ball into the hole with just one shot to win
the game.
The pro watched as the elderly
golfer carefully stepped into the trap,
looked the situation over, and swung his
club. To the pro’s amazement, the ball went
right into the cup.
“Great shot!” the pro said. “I
thought you said you have trouble
getting out of sand traps?”
“I do. Could you give me a
hand, please?”

SIMPLE CHECKS YOU CAN DO
TO HELP KEEP YOUR VEHICLE FROM OVERHEATING THIS
SUMMER
!Vehicle breakdowns often happen during the summer
months due to coolant problems and engines
overheating. Poor air flow around the radiator is often a
cause.
•CLEAN ANY DEBRIS-such as leaves & pine needles
which can accumulate around the fins of the radiator and
A/C condenser.
f
!
!
oo
•CHECK YOUR RADIATOR CAP-(Older model vehicles
have caps. Newer model vehicles don’t have caps- their
radiators are sealed) The cap is continually exposed to hot
temperatures which hardens and cracks the rubber gasket.
The metal springs also weakens overtime. If you think you
need one call us, we can usually have it the same day.
Replacing a radiator cap that is over 5 years old is cheap
insurance
Green antifreeze should be replaced approximately every 2 years or
30,000 miles. Other colors such as blue, pink, yellow, red & orange
(extended life) should be replaced approximately every 5 years.
Keeping it clean & serviced can save you money. Clean coolant
avoids corrosion which can cause premature wear to your
components.

“I don’t live close enough to come here often but I wanted
to leave a good review after they took such good care of
me. They let me know of some issues to keep an eye on but
there was no pressure to add on more work for the day.
Since I usually get work done at the dealership, this was a
refreshing change of pace.
Five stars***** for a great and honest Mom & Pop Shop!”
