Express Columbus Express Soccer www.columbusexpress .com October 2014 U 11, U12s Participate in “Make Your Own Ball Night” The U11 and U12 Boys and Girls Teams accepted the challenge of “Make Your Own Ball Night” on September 18. Joined by 12 members of the Franklin College Mens’ Soccer Team, the U12 Boys made soccer balls out of plastic bags, duct tape, garbage bags, and any other materials the boys could gather. According to Indiana Soccer, “Make Your Own Ball Night” is a creative youth development initiative introduced by Mark Speigel and SCSA that demonstrates - one way - that the game of soccer can be leveraged to help players understand just how fortunate they are to have opportunities that hundreds of millions of children will never experience. This initiative also broadens the minds of these young players as they learn about other parts of the world.” Shaun Mahoney and Adam Megal, U12 Coaches, decided not only to participate in this event but to also donate soccer balls to Soccer Salvation, a non-profit organization that assists underprivileged youth by collecting and donating soccer gear to individuals and teams that need assistance. "We helped make soccer balls out of different materials to teach how people who can't have a ball can always make one," said Franklin College senior Brandon Iaria. "It's fun, creative, and teaches the boys that there is never a moment to not play soccer no matter what you have." U12 Kurt Nusterer spoke about his experience in the Make Your Own Ball Night event.
