Seems like things are blooming in our industry as well. We are all so busy and running around trying to get projects started and then “wait”; they get stalled again. Frustrating as that may be, these are the times we live in. Maybe we can get a jump on pre-planning our projects and buying them out earlier now? Or maybe we just keep going through rounds of value engineering ideas trying to get them back into budget so they don’t get cancelled because pricing has gone through the roof. Hopefully we can all continue estimating and budgeting accurately. April’s program meeting was a success talking about mechanical estimating processes and what we can do to get the younger generation involved in estimating. Estimating skills are a hot commodity these days and there seems to be a huge gap between estimators, very few in their 20’s and the next jump they all seem to be in their 50’s. What happened in between? Involvement in organizations like ASPE are important ways to enhance careers in estimating so please join us each month and join ASPE. To help inspire the next generation of estimators, if you have any contact info for local college reps to invite recent grads, please send them to Frederick.chana@ gmail.com ASAP so we can expand our chapter and community. Or invite those recent grads yourself so they can learn a little about estimating and some of the interesting issues they may face. This month’s program will be the famous ethics program led by our past leader Curt Kolar. This is always a fun and entertaining meeting so please join us on the 16th. There will also be some retired members attending who have contributed to our chapter so please say hello and welcome back to them. The summer Certification cycle is fast approaching so please put in your applications to become a Certified Officers and Chairs Columbia Pacific 2017 President Chana Frederick, CPE 971-832-3944 [email protected] First Vice President/Membership Craig Welburn, E 503-566-5617 [email protected] Second Vice President/Programs Carey Lee 360-949-6974 [email protected] Secretary Mike Flynn, CPE (971) 279-5002 [email protected] Treasurer Robert Rivera, C (503) 846-7849 [email protected] Certification/NW Recap Editor Chana Frederick, CPE 971-832-3944 [email protected] Publisher Samantha Jordan (503) 777-5531 [email protected] Directors Jared Carkin 503-209-6048 [email protected] ~New Chapter Address~ PO Box 19886 Portland, OR 97280 [email protected] 971-832-3944 www.aspe54.org 2 May 2017 Columbia Pacific Chapter 54 ASPE May Program A Question of Ethics Have you checked your rules of conduct lately? Add to that, never-before-seen provisions included in, or important facts intentionally missing from the bidding documents or (either knowingly or not) being coerced into participating in a dubious proposition with an unscrupulous owner or contractor and you may face avoidable perils unless you know how to defend yourself. Bring your experience, voice and a pencil for this stimulating and thought-provoking annual forum tradition, as we present actual scenarios for your ethics consideration, and pick up some wisdom from those who have been there (and have the scars to prove it!)
