RECTOR’S
LETTER
SEPTEMBER 2013
I am so aware that we lead such hectically busy lives under enormous pressures.
Constantly we feel torn this way and that by so many different demands in our
lives. They can feel overwhelming to us at times. We find it so difficult to keep our
lives in balance and to keep things in perspective.
Even as Christians who are trying to follow Jesus we get so easily caught up in
the urgent that we lose sight of the eternal Kingdom priorities that shape our lives
as lovers and followers of Jesus.
I wanted to share what I see as some of God’s Kingdom priorities for us in and
through Kill O’The Grange over this coming winter, with the hope and the prayer
that you too will catch God’s heart and God’s vision, and joyfully commit yourself
to be part of God’s great story of Redemption as it is written in our lives in this
church family and the area in which we live.
As we lift up our eyes we will see that we are part of something much, much bigger and more lasting and eternal.
Our greatest joy as Christian believers is to become the vehicle of Jesus’ life to
others, devoting ourselves to God’s purpose. Our ministry purpose and why we
are here is to be a reflection of His heart through a vibrant 21st Century church,
committed to building a Spirit filled people, who are inspired by Jesus enjoying us,
enjoying Him. A people driven by compassion to reach the others with the Good
News of the Gospel, and to be a transforming presence in our community.
We are here in Kill to make a Kingdom different! We are called as followers of
Jesus to live for God and for others – selflessly – sacrificially – generously and
joyfully. Thinking how we can invest our lives in God’s Kingdom priorities for the
people outside the four walls of KOTG – what a challenge! To change this area
for Jesus, one life at a time. Will you ask God to enlarge our vision of the future
this winter – and will you step across that invisible line with me and say, Yes
LORD – count me in! That’s worth giving my life to – For God and others – for
today and for all eternity.
Your Friend and Rector –
Arthur

Week of Prayer - 2nd—6th September
We here at Kill O’The Grange Parish, before we embark as a
Church Family in all our activities over this winter’s work, are setting
important time aside, to embark on having a Week of Prayer.
We will seek to pray into the reasons we exist in this area – What
we are about as a Church Family? What we are here for? And
what we trying to achieve with God and for God!
We are excited about this week! What does that mean? What will it
look like?
Great Questions! And we offer no answers other than the following thoughts:
Enjoy God
Spend time with God
Listen to God
Give over all that we do, so that we focus on doing it for His glory.
Arthur

Ordinations
Ian Horner, our Children’s and Youth Co-Ordinator from 2006
to 2011, will be ordained Deacon in Christ Church Cathedral on
Sunday 22nd September, at 3.30 p.m., and he will serve his
internship as Curate in St. Patrick’s Church, Greystones.
Ian has truly made a huge impact for good on our Parish since he
joined us seven years ago. Our thoughts and prayers go with
Ian Horner
him, Jenny and Sam as they take this significant step forward in
faith.
Ian has said that he would be so pleased to
see as many as possible from our Parish in
the Cathedral at the service.
During his last service in Kill, on Sunday 25th
August, the Rector presented him, on behalf of
the Parishioners, with a gift: a sizeable commentary on the Acts of the Apostles, which will
be an excellent source for sermons!

presentation, 25th August 2013

Eugene Griffin, a former intern at Kill Parish, will be ordained at the same time.
Please remember him also in your prayers.
Growing Groups
A special meeting of all Growing Groups will take place on
Wednesday 11th September at 8.00 p.m. in the Parish Centre.
This will be the first of several meetings to be held once every three
months. All are most welcome to come along.
The Rector is starting a new Men’s Growing Group, which he’ll lead. We’ll have
more news of that later.

It’s back! The Parish Fun Day / Fête this year is on Saturday 21st September. Here are some
of the things planned for this year.
The family favourite—the Giant Slide-is back as well as a penalty shoot-out. The Rector is
planning a car wash, so make sure you bring your car along on the day for washing. Norman
Thompson, our Youth Worker, is busy planning all sorts of games for you and he will also have
a sweet stall on the day. Eats again will be provided in two ways: there will be a BBQ run by
Clonkeen Bowls and sandwiches etc. will be served in the main hall. We hope to have a display by the Emergency Services again this year, as we did two years ago with representatives
from Fire, Gardaí and Ambulance on hand. We are inviting local businesses to join us to display their business for a small fee. If you want to be part of this, please contact one of the
committee listed below. We are planning a bumper raffle again; at the time of writing the prizes
are not known, but we are assured they will be great and tickets will be available to be sold before the day.
We will have the usual array of stalls selling goods (see list below) and we would ask you to
support them in any way you can by donating goods, by buying goods and by helping out on
the day. So now is the time to clear out that press or attic. Goods can be left in the Parish
Centre on Thursday 19th September from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., and all day on Friday 20th from 9
a.m. to 9 p.m. Please don’t leave goods outside these hours as we cannot store them and the
Centre is in constant use.

Waste Watchers Holiday Bible Club was on at Kill O’The Grange
from the 8th – 12th July.
The theme of the camp was ‘Transformation’ – we learnt about
how in a similar way to waste or rubbish being recycled and being
made new or transformed – God wants to transform our lives. We
learnt about how God brought change by transforming nothing to
something at creation, how God transformed the lives of people through Jesus when
there was a social disaster at a wedding and when a man who was born blind from birth
began to see for the first time spiritually and physically. Most importantly we learnt about
how God transformed the broken relationship between us and Him, through Jesus’ death
which makes it possible for us to be friends with Him and to live freely and transformed
for Him.
We had lots of fun learning about transformation during the week and also through singing, discussion, arts, crafts, drama, games, challenges and activities.
The Holiday Bible Club was again a wonderful event in our church and parish and provided us with a great way to have fun learning more about God as well as to reach out to
and serve the children and families in our community. None of it would have been possible without the amazing help, prayers and support from all of the team and our church.
Thanks so much to the team; Marcus, Will, Lucy, Alice, Suzie, Naomi, Keith, Rob, Isaac,
Seb, Ivan, Lexy, Emma, Kate, to the ladies who made lunches for us each day; Helen,
Sarah, Sandra and Sonia and to Sheila, Bert and James who came along to talk to the
children about why being friends with Jesus is so important to them.
Hopefully next year we can host another great week of fun learning about God for the
children in our community.

Books for Iran
A great hunger
The Growing Groups are now starting up again, following the
summer break.
Our particular Group supports Church in Chains, and we
have heard that there is a great hunger for the Scriptures
in Iran.
We are so privileged to have such freedom to study the
Scriptures in this country.
“One Million Lights” is a campaign to print and distribute as
many copies of the New Testament as possible to add to
the one million already distributed.
How can we in Kill help in this initiative?
For those who would like to contribute €2 (or more), there
will be an opportunity to do this on the first and second
Sundays in September.
Sheila Lynch and Blanche Cooper

Lights initiative can be found on the website:

FROM GILL AND CARLOS OLAAKA IN UGANDA
End of August 2013
Dear Friends,
We hope you are well wherever you may be as
the Western summer comes to an end. We
have had a good busy month with the days just
flying by. From the
photo you can see
Jojo has been very excited to ride his ‘happy birthday boda
boda’ (boda boda being a motorbike taxi here in Uganda, on
which you sit and pay the driver to whizz you through the
crazy Kampala traffic in the hope of getting to your destination on time!) Thanks as always for your support and
prayers,
From
Gill, Carlos and Josiah
with love.
Please pray:
We thank God for the good recruitment that occurred for the New Life Homes. As
we reported last time, we needed to restructure, with 1 staff leaving and with a need to
recruit one new person as well as replacing the one who left. A very Godly man called
Amon has joined the team as the New Life Homes Manager, and a staff already in
Abaana moved positions to take a lead in the area of resettling children back into their
homes, after they spend time at the homes for rehabilitation. We pray that together they
will work alongside the 2 other staff to provide a loving, healthy and enriching environment for the 38 boys to stay while they prepare to return to a home situation. We continue to ask for prayer for the spiritual development and transformation that is absolutely
paramount for each of the boys. We have 3 other positions we are currently filling, so
ask for prayer that God would again direct and lead the right people with skills and passion for seeing Christ at work in vulnerable lives to join Abaana.
We thank God for Frontline and for each boy that is connected to the programme.
We had a sad occurrence recently where one boy misused some money that was to go
towards his fees for doing an English course and so we had to ask him to leave our Discipleship House, as one of the founding rules is that if you steal, you can’t stay (stealing
18
is one of the big temptations for these boys, having had to hustle on the streets to survive
prior to joining Frontline). As an older boy in his twenties, we hope we can still support
him to finish his studies and live independently, though there is a big need for the Lord to
soften his heart as he is quite bitter and antagonistic in spirit. Please pray for wisdom in
helping him, especially for Joseph, the Uncle who stays at the Discipleship House, who is
working closely with him.
We thank God that Gill’s health is generally good, as she has around 6 weeks left in
her pregnancy, though at a recent doctor’s appointment it was noted that her thyroid levels were not quite in the right range (she has hypothyroidism so takes medicine daily to
ensure that the hormones her body produces are at the right levels). Her dose has been
adjusted, and so we pray that it would stabilise. Please continue to pray for a safe delivery, especially as we are keen to try a normal birth after having a last minute Caesarean
with Josiah.

Important Update from Crosslinks
We have received an important message from Trevor Johnston
of Crosslinks. Owing to severe financial constraints, the organization has reluctantly been forced to make sizeable cuts in its operations. These include the closure of the Dublin office with job
losses in Dublin and in London. However the Belfast office will
remain, and will cater for all of the island of Ireland.
Your prayers for the valuable work of this fine Christian body will be especially valued, holding before the Lord those whose jobs have been affected, especially Mrs
Hazel Coulter in the Dublin office, whose contribution over the years has been immense.
Please contact [email protected] or the Parish Office if you would like further details.
From the close of Trevor’s message:
“Obviously, there is still a huge distance to go. God's Word, which brings eternal life
and salvation, must continue to be proclaimed, until the day of Christ's return. So, let
us press on together in deep gratitude and prayerful confidence in our work for Christ
and his Gospel. “

Prayer Diary—
Diary—Parish Newsletter
Many thanks to Derek Singleton, who has contributed the prayers for the Prayer Diary–
see centre pages 14 and 15.
We hope to set up a rota of people who would volunteer to provide prayers for the Prayer
Diary in the Newsletter.
Prayer for the Christian is so important. I f you feel this is a ministry you would like to
offer on an occasional basis, please contact James Darling— Tel.: 288 2546 or E-mail:
[email protected]
Thank you so much to those who have already volunteered!
Readers and Prayers on Sundays
For the past couple of years I have being heading up this important ministry within the
Parish. Whilst is great that we have so many on the roster at the moment we are rather
lacking in people to lead prayers at both services and to read at the 11.30 a.m. service. I
would like to hear from anybody who would be interested in either reading or praying
at either service. Generally you get asked to do it about once a quarter: if reading
slightly more than if praying.

The Fear Factor?
On Sunday 14th July, the theme of our All Age Service was “Do not be afraid!” These
words emerged from a locked box, following an intriguing treasure hunt to find clues leading to where the key had been hidden in the church!
Simon Scott then
spoke on the story of Elijah and the widow of Zarephath (1 Kings 17:7 – 24).
We all fear some things during our lives – poverty, death, bereavement, job
losses and so on. However we have Jesus to rely on in helping us to conquer our fears and uncertainties, just as the Lord, through Elijah, provided a
constant supply of oil and flour to the worried widow.
We should prayerfully listen to God, and receive from His abundant goodness all we need to help us love and serve Him. The LORD will provide! (Genesis 22:14)

CORRECTION
In the June 2013 issues of the Newsletter and of the Church Review, the final sentence
of the Rector’s Letter should have read:
Over the next three years we have set a further three priorities to build and
strengthen our ongoing relationship with Yei Diocese, which will include the
opportunity for members of our Parish to visit Yei Diocese and our Global Partners in the coming years.
(The word “priorities” had appeared as “properties”.)

HIGHS AND LOWS
During his sermon on Sunday 4th August, the Rector demonstrated how tall Goliath was—
”Six cubits and a span” (1 Samuel 17:4, NIV.) That’s about 3 metres or 9 ft 10.11 in., and
very impressive.
So who was the shortest person in the Bible?
He’s in the book of Job—Bildad the Shuhite (= Shoe height)!!
What about the second tallest? That’s easy: Nehemiah (=Knee high Miah).
(We’ll try to do better next time.)
