Devon’s Secret Rectangle
Devon’s teacher asked all of the third graders
to draw a secret rectangle and find its perimeter
in inches. Devon said his rectangle has a
perimeter of 14inches. What could his secret
rectangle look like? Draw and label the
rectangle.
(turn in)
Are there other rectangles Devon could have
drawn that would have a perimeter of 14
inches? Explain.

Worksheet
What’s My Perimeter?
Cut out the centimeter ruler and inch ruler on
page 3. Have your child find the perimeter in
inches or centimeters of different objects in your
house. Find two objects and have them predict
which has a bigger perimeter. Have them
measure and check their prediction.
Read the directions to your child and have them
complete the worksheet on page 4 by finding
the perimeter of each shape.

Finding Area
(turn in)
Michelle’s third grade teacher asked her to find
the area of the rectangle below. Michelle said
she couldn’t find the area because the unit
squares were not shown. Explain to Michelle
how she can find the area. Show your work.
Activity
Area All Around
Cut out the unit squares from the grid (page 3).
Use the squares to find the area of small
rectangular objects in your house. (for example:
one side of a tissue box, a greeting card, the top
of the remote control, etc.) Compare the areas
of the objects you measured and decide on the
object with the greatest area.
Worksheet
What’s My Area?
Complete the worksheet on page 4. Encourage
your child to use the formula l x w (length times
width) for finding the area, but allow them to
draw grid lines for unit squares if needed.

Mad Minute Math
(turn in)
Matthew’s teacher posted the following problem
in class: 125 ÷ 4
Matthew raised his hand and said he knew the
answer would have leftovers (remainders)
because he knows the pattern for counting by
4’s. Is Matthew correct? Explain.
You will need someone to play this game with
you. Read the directions on page 3 and play the
Product Game on page 4.
Complete the worksheet on page 5. Encourage
your child to write the answers to as many
problems as they can from memory in the 2
minutes. After the two minutes are up, have
them solve any remaining problems using other
strategies.

Mr. Math said if you know your x2 facts from
memory then you should know your x4. Is Mr.
Math correct? Explain. Use math facts to
support your answer.
Discuss with your child that if you double 2 you
get 4, all you need to do is double the x2
product to find the x4 product. (For example, 2
x 6 = 12, so 4 x 6 = 24)
