CBS Munich Trip 2012

CBS Munich Trip 2012
My name is Daniel Donnan, I'm a year 13 pupil at CBS, currently studying History A-Level. In
October our school took part in a history trip to Germany. We had to arrive at the school for 2:45am to
get a coach to Dublin, so we were up early. We arrived in Dublin for around 5:30am and our plane
departed at 7:20am. We arrived in Munich at 10:50am that same morning. Shortly after our arrival we
met our tour guide in the centre off the city at Marienplatz. We then went on a walking tour and we all
could see that it was a very traditionally German city, filled with historic events. Our tour guide showed
us plenty of interesting things, historic buildings, such as churches and told us interesting facts, such as
no building would be built higher than the tallest church as the Bavarians liked to be traditional. When
we were done with our guide we went back to the hotel for some dinner and to sleep as we were all
tired from the journey. The next morning we had to wake up at 8am for breakfast ahead of our trip to
the Eagles nest, Hitler’s summer home. The breakfast was cold meat, bread and some cereal. We got a
bus journey through Austria up to the Alps. When we reached the Alps we had to get a second bus up to
the Eagle’s Nest as our larger bus couldn't go any further. When we reached the Eagle’s Nest the view
was extraordinary. It was as if someone had painted the view, it was something that could not put into
words. We had a tour of the Eagle’s Nest with our guide showing us pictures of what happened and
telling us that Hitler had only been here five times, which I couldn't understand as the place was
magical. We were told that Hitler brought some very important people here such as Mussolini the
Italian dictator. We were given a while to explore this place and look at the sights. When we were done
we went back to our hotel for some dinner then into the centre of Munich to shop around and pick up
some souvenirs for our families and ourselves. We got home and everyone went straight to sleep as we
had a long day. The next day was our trip to the Dachau concentration camp, which was the first
concentration camp built by the Nazi regime. It was also our final day in Germany. We woke up for
breakfast which was similar to the one we had the previous day. We met up with our tour guide outside
our hotel, He brought us to the train station then on a separate bus to Dachau. Our tour guide showed us
around and we saw all sorts of interesting things, such as prisoner’s clothes and games they played like
chess and the barracks where they kept those prisoners. We then saw the gas chambers and the
incinerators which were used to carry out Nazi extermination policies. After Dachau we had to leave
Germany. We went to the airport to get the plane home at around 10:50pm local time and we arrived
home at 12 midnight. It was such a memorable trip but the thing I liked the most was the visit to the
Eagle’s Nest, as the view was spectacular. In all it was a very memorable trip which I really enjoyed
and I would recommend anyone to visit Munich and the Eagle’s Nest.
