Order of Operations

Order of Operations
Objective:
Solve equations by applying the
order of operations.
List three real-world activities that require doing
things in order.
My examples:
· putting on socks before shoes
· brushing your teeth

Lesson 1-4: Order of Operations
Main Ideas
1) Why is order of operations
important when solving a math
problem?
3) Write the acronym and
define each letter.
2) What acronym can help
us remember the order of
operations?
Examples
6 + (4 • 12) ÷ 3
2
4 +5-2*6

Making Connections: We often need order in our lives. Can you think of
a daily routine you do everyday that require a certain order (order of
operations)?
You evaluate an expression by finding
its value. To make sure everyone gets
the same result, mathematicians use
the order of operations:
1. Evaluate expressions inside parentheses 28 ÷ (9 - 5) + 32
(grouping symbols).
2. Evaluate powers.
28 ÷ 4 + 3
2
3. Multiply and/or divide from left to right.
28 ÷ 4 + 9
4. Add and/or subtract from left to right.

Solve the following equations using the order of operations.
Move the purple box to check your answer.
4 + 5 * 6 = 34
2
(5 + 5) = 100
2
10 + (3 * 8) - 14 * 2 = 96
3 * (4 + 7) = 33
6 + 9 * 5 = 51
2
1 + 2 * 3 = 19
MAGIC TUNNEL
Solve the equations.
Drag through the tunnel
to reveal the solution.
(7 + 43) / 5 = 10
2
115 - 10 + 3 * 5 = 30
(18 - 11) * 3 + 7 = 28
15 + 10 * 4 = 55
MAGIC TUNNEL
Solve the equations.
Drag through the tunnel
to reveal the solution.
10 - 4 / 2 * 3 = 4
14 - 7 + 5 + 1 = 13
9.5 * 2 / .5 + 45 / 5 = 47
