Lower School News Special Information for Parents March 2017 Spotlight on 3 rd Grade Mrs. Melody Powell and Mrs. Lisa Turlington look forward every year to seeing which famous Americans their students will choose for the third grade’s traditional Wax Museum Project. Once they made their choice this year, students independently researched the person’s life, developing a timeline, creating a bibliography of sources, and ultimately composing a first-person speech to be memorized and performed in full costume on the day the “museum” opened. Posed in front of their informative displays, students waited for viewers to pass by and press the handmade button on their display, at which point they came to life and recited their speech. Another third grade focus, all year, has been learning to read for enjoyment. Recently the students have formed book clubs! They meet once a week to share what they’re reading independently, recount the story, and react to others’ sharing with questions. On the math front, parents likely know how challenging our recent introductory unit on fractions has been for third graders. This is such a big year for gaining true problemsolving skills in math. It’s exciting to see how much they progress throughout this pivotal year. Finally, third graders have joined with Grove Park Baptist Church in their ministry to a family who lost everything they owned in Hurricane Matthew. Students collected and delivered over 300 food and dry good items to restock the Applewhite family’s pantry.
