Peach Blossom Trail
Peaches are one of the most popular fruits in the United States and have always been
symbolic of something good as indicated by the saying “pretty as a peach.” The State of Georgia
is indeed fortunate to be so well known for such a wonderful commodity (although anyone who
has ever been whipped by a Georgia peach twig may not think so.) Today, Georgia is known as
the Peach State, not because it produces the most peaches, but rather because it was the birthplace of the commercial peach industry.
When traveling in Georgia from mid-May through
August, the Peach Blossom Trail offers several roadside stands where visitors can find sweet Georgia
peaches! During their travels down the trail, they can
see thousands of acres of peach orchards. There are
several farms that offer tours into the orchards, providing a close look at the peach trees and information
on the history of how this fruit from China made its
way to Georgia.
The Peach Blossom Trail runs parallel to I-75. Get
off the beaten path, and travel the Trail. But hurry! Peaches will be gone by the end of August,
and these sweet fruits won’t be available again until next year. For more information, visit
www.peachblossomtrail.com.
Fun at Fort Discovery in Augusta
Discover the fun of hands-on science! Fort Discovery is
located on the scenic Riverwalk in downtown Augusta. This
128,000 square-foot family-oriented math and science center
fires the imaginations of children and adults by making math,
science, and technology come alive with 250 hands-on
exhibits, custom digital programs in the Paul S. Simon
Discovery Theater, StarLab planetarium, educational workshops, and demonstrations in the PowerStation.
Enjoy Augusta’s tradition of Fat Man’s for lunch! The Usry
family has moved their popular eatery to the first level of the science center and will be serving
Southern-style dishes, salads, sandwiches, and ice cream. The center also offers free Wi-Fi.
National Science Center’s Fort Discovery is the perfect place for birthday parties, family
reunions, special events, wedding rehearsals, and company outings. The museum is located at
One Seventh Street on Downtown Augusta’s Riverwalk. For information phone 800-325-5445 or
706-821-0245 or visit www.NationalScienceCenter.org.
Watermelon Festival in Cordele-Crisp County
Visit Cordele-Crisp County in June for the 61st Annual Watermelon Days Festival and
celebrate the crop that has made the area famous. The main day of the festival will be Saturday,
June 26, and will feature arts and crafts, entertainment, watermelon eating and seed spitting
contests, free slices of watermelon, and a dance that evening.
The many events planned for June will include a dog show,
pageant, road races, photo contest, puppet show, watermelon
decorating contest, potter show, golf tournament, gospel sing, fishing rodeo, car and truck and antique tractor display, and quilt display.
There will be a Watermelon Idol Contest and rides on the SAM
Shortline Excursion Train.
Stay a few extra days and visit the State Farmers Market, the
Georgia Veterans Memorial State Park, and the historical downtown
with many stores and Southern cooking at its best. The Cordele area

Bainbridge – A Place of Adventure
For outdoor adventure, Bainbridge is the place to visit. There’s golfing at the local courses,
tennis at the city’s many public courts, swimming at the Aquatic Center, and fishing on Lake
Seminole.
The Georgia State Legislature in 2008 declared
Bainbridge the Bass Capital of Georgia. The Flint River
and Lake Seminole offer abundant fishing and water
sports, attracting thousands of amateur and professional fishermen with many top bass tournaments throughout the year. The Silver Lake Wildlife Management Area
offers hiking, hunting, and fishing.
Agriculture plays a significant role in the lives of
Southerners and is the largest industry in Decatur
County. Explore the G.W. Long Farm, a Certified
Georgia Farm Market, where you can pick your own produce. The farm is open from MaySeptember and has everything from watermelons to sweet potatoes to squash and okra.
Southern towns are famous for their downtown squares, and Bainbridge is no exception.
Willis Park is the center of downtown and is lined with boutiques and antique shops. The Square,
the site of community events throughout the year, is also the start of the self-guided Bainbridge
Heritage Tour which features historic buildings and homes.
For information, call 229-243-8555 or visit www.visitbainbridgega.com.
