What are some of the AIADs SOSH will offer in 2017?
Conflict and Human Security Studies (CHSS): partner with an NGO to volunteer in a developing country, where you
will increase your cross-cultural competence and learn about critical human security issues.
These opportunities are open to all cadets regardless of major unless otherwise indicated
• Cross-Cultural Solutions (CCS): volunteer on projects that provide high-need communities with education,
healthcare, support for people with disabilities, care for the elderly, and more. This is a three week program in
which 5-7 cadets will travel with one OIC. Dates and OICs are TBD. Tentative locations are listed below.
o Rabat, Morocco
o Volta region, Ghana
o Kilimanjaro, Tanzania
o Bangkok, Thailand
o Cartago, Costa Rica
• Projects Abroad: volunteer on projects that provide high-need communities with education, healthcare, support
for people with disabilities, care for the elderly, and more. This is a three week program in which 5-7 cadets
will travel with one OIC. Participants in this program get to stay with host families. Tentative locations are for
Mongolia and Cambodia. Dates and OICs are TBD.
• Operation Crossroads Africa: volunteer for seven weeks on community development projects that make a
meaningful impact to high-need communities in either Rwanda, the Gambia, Ghana, or Tanzania (probably
Ghana due to country clearance requirements). If fluent in French, then there may be opportunities to work in
Senegal, Niger, and Togo as well. Cadets will travel in groups of two or three without an OIC. Dates are 15Jun10Aug.
• HUNT Alternatives: work with the Institute for Inclusive Security organization and Women Waging Peace
network to find a placement with a grassroots NGO in almost any part of the world. In 2016, cadets worked in
Croatia and Bosnia. Dates are flexible to cadet’s schedule. OIC is TBD.
• Cultural Immersion in Haiti: volunteer with the Give Hope Global organization at an orphanage for one week and
then spend the next week working with the US Embassy on various other projects. Dates 11Jun-1Jul.
• Tri Academies trip to Vietnam and Cambodia: joint trip with Navy midshipmen and Air Force cadets to volunteer
and learn about Vietnamese and Cambodian culture. Dates 31May-24Jun. (will probably occur during first
block; usually 4 weeks long).
• Community Development Project in Ethiopia: Join 3-4 cadets on a joint trip with Texas Tech University to explore
challenges and opportunities surrounding economic development in Ethiopia. Cadets will increase their
understanding of US inter-agency efforts in Africa, the role of the military in promoting stability on the African
continent, and the importance of strong civil-military relations. Open to Econ majors only. Dates TBD.
Other OCONUS Programs (non-NGO): SOSH offers a variety of travel opportunities, ranging from internships and
academic courses to research projects.

• Terrorism, Peace, and Security in West Africa: Accra, Ghana and Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire. OIC is Dr. Jason Warner.
• Peace and Dialogue Leadership Initiative trip to Israel: partner with student leaders from Yale, Penn, and
Georgetown and travel to Israel and the West Bank to meet with experts on both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict. This trip enables the participants to develop a nuanced understanding of the conflict and then
encourages them to build a network with each other to discuss a coherent strategy for achieving peace in the

• Internship at the NATO HQ in Brussels, Belgium. Dates are flexible to cadet’s schedule. If interested, please see

• Joint Research Project with the ALLIES Program at Tufts University: travel to Japan with USNA midshipmen and
Tufts students to learn about civilian-military relations. Dates are TBD. Please reach out to Dr. Ruth Beitler if

• Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Center in Accra, Ghana. Work as a research assistant with a
Professor at the Centre to complete a publishable research paper focused on African security issues. Cadet must
have strong academic record with minimum 3.5 GPA. Dates are flexible to cadet’s schedule. OIC is TBD. If

• Salzburg Academy on Media and Global Change in Salzburg, Austria. If interested, please see Mr. Keith Hughes.

• Irregular Warfare and Post-Conflict Transformation at Queen’s University Belfast in Ireland. If interested, please

• Internship at Marubeni Research Institute in Tokyo, Japan. This is an Econ AIAD so if interested, please see MAJ

Grand Strategy and Winant Scholar programs: travel internationally (countries TBD) to study texts and contexts
focusing on historical and philosophical traditions that influenced the American Founding. These AIADs offer
XH397 course credit.
• The Grand Strategy AIAD is typically offered to cadets with a Grand Strategy Minor only. If interested in Grand
