SON-SHIP What does it mean to be a son? SON-SHIP Obedience Hebrews 5:7-8 (NKJV) 7who, in the days of his flesh, when he [Jesus] had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to him [the Father] who was able to save him from death, and was heard because of his 8 godly fear, though he was a son, yet he learned obedience by the things which he suffered. Jesus, a son, learned obedience Matthew 26:39 (NKJV) 39He [Jesus] went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O my Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” Obedience - putting aside our will for the Father’s will How watchful are you in discerning if what you want is in sync with what God wants? Jeremiah 17:9 (NLT) 9The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? Isaiah 55:8-9 (NKJV) 8“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your 9 ways my ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. God sees things from a universal and eternal perspective Focus on seeking God’s will instead of just asking for needs. 1 John 5:14 (NKJV) 14Now this is the confidence that we have in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. So what does it mean to be a son? It means that we are watchful in checking if our will is in sync with God’s. It also means that we are proactive in seeking to know God’s will. Luke 2:46 & 49 (NKJV) 46Now so it was that after three days they found him [Jesus] in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. 49And he said to them, “Why did you seek me? Did you not know that I must be about my Father’s business?” The example of Jesus consistently seeking and obeying God’s will John 4:34 (NKJV) 34Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me, and to finish his work. The example of Jesus consistently seeking and obeying God’s will John 5:19 (NIV) 19Jesus gave them this answer: “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. The example of Jesus consistently seeking and obeying God’s will John 8:28-29 (NKJV) 28Then Jesus said to them, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father taught me, I speak 29 these things. And he who sent me is with me. The Father has not left me alone, for I always do those things that please him.” The example of Jesus consistently seeking and obeying God’s will John 14:10 (NKJV) 10Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own authority; but the Father who dwells in me does the works. The example of Jesus consistently seeking and obeying God’s will If you seem to have lost your way, go back to the last time you knew the sharp, cutting edge of God’s voice. Then obey.
