Son-ship: What does it mean to be a son

SON-SHIP
What does it mean to be a son?
SON-SHIP
Obedience
Hebrews 5:7-8 (NKJV)
7who, in the days of his flesh, when he [Jesus] had
offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement
cries and tears to him [the Father] who was able to
save him from death, and was heard because of his
8
godly fear, though he was a son, yet he learned
obedience by the things which he suffered.
Jesus, a son, learned obedience
Matthew 26:39 (NKJV)
39He [Jesus] went a little farther and fell on His
face, and prayed, saying, “O my Father, if it is
possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless,
not as I will, but as you will.”
Obedience - putting aside our will for the Father’s will
How watchful are you in discerning if what
you want is in sync with what God wants?
Jeremiah 17:9 (NLT)
9The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and
desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?
Isaiah 55:8-9 (NKJV)
8“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your
9
ways my ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are
higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your
ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
God sees things from a universal and eternal perspective
Focus on seeking God’s will instead of just asking
for needs.
1 John 5:14 (NKJV)
14Now this is the confidence that we have in him, that if we
ask anything according to his will, he hears us.
So what does it mean to be a son? It means that we
are watchful in checking if our will is in sync with
God’s. It also means that we are proactive in
seeking to know God’s will.
Luke 2:46 & 49 (NKJV)
46Now so it was that after three days they found him
[Jesus] in the temple, sitting in the midst of the
teachers, both listening to them and asking them
questions.
49And
he said to them, “Why did you seek me? Did you
not know that I must be about my Father’s business?”

John 4:34 (NKJV)
34Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him
who sent me, and to finish his work.

John 5:19 (NIV)
19Jesus gave them this answer: “I tell you the truth, the
Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he
sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father
does the Son also does.

John 8:28-29 (NKJV)
28Then Jesus said to them, “When you lift up the Son of
Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do
nothing of myself; but as my Father taught me, I speak
29
these things. And he who sent me is with me. The
Father has not left me alone, for I always do those
things that please him.”

John 14:10 (NKJV)
10Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the
Father in me? The words that I speak to you I do not
speak on my own authority; but the Father who dwells
in me does the works.

If you seem to have lost your way, go back to the
last time you knew the sharp, cutting edge of
God’s voice. Then obey. The key question is, “Have
you obeyed the last thing God told you to do?”
