A MESSAGE FROM CHELSEA………………
Hooray – spring time! We love this time of year when the days are getting longer and we see
more sunshine. It’s a great time to spring clean your home, and also to spring clean your
health. Getting exercise should be easier with more daylight hours and warmth, and eating
‘cleaner’ is more appealing - those comfort foods aren’t quite as tempting when it’s warm!
We suggest eating foods that are in season, grown locally if possible, and avoiding processed
foods as much as possible.
Also, don’t forget to ‘like’ our Facebook page – I’ve been doing regular posts on various
physiotherapy related topics. Feel free to request a post on something you’re interested in.
GOING BAREFOOT
With the warmer weather and longer days, comes the possibility to kick off your shoes and
get barefoot!
There is no ‘one size fits all’ with running style, but landing on your forefoot (ball of the
foot) or mid-foot generally helps to minimize impact forces, reducing strain on the legs and
body. When running barefoot people naturally tend to do this – it’s uncomfortable to land
on your heel with no cushioning.
Shoes are great for when we’re walking or running on abrasive surfaces, or hard surfaces like
cement, and they can be important to improve biomechanics for those with some structural
problems. BUT most people would benefit from walking or running on grass occasionally.
It will help to strengthen the muscles in your feet and ankles. It also feels great!
Of course getting out on the grass also means you’re out in the fresh air and getting some
sunshine, which is important for vitamin D. It also helps to normalize sleep cycles.
Getting ‘earthed’ or ‘grounded’ is also great for your general health. Having bare skin
contact to the Earth can help to neutralize free radicals in your body by conducting
electrons (the surface of the Earth has a negative charge). This is a natural way to help reduce
inflammation in the body and even slow the aging process – sounds good to us!
QUOTE OF THE DAY…….
“Think about how hard it is to change yourself, and then you will understand how hard it is to
change others......”

Keeping your body in sync with your life!
As it heats up and we become more active outside,
it is important to stay well hydrated. This doesn’t
mean guzzling copious amounts of water (you can drink too much water) - just make sure that
you’re adjusting your intake appropriately. If you’ve been sweating a lot, obviously you’ll need
to drink more.
Also be aware that you lose salts through sweat, so make sure that your diet includes plenty
of minerals through healthy foods. Another option is supplementing your water with
‘Electrolyte Formula’ which we keep in stock. This product has no fructose or other added
nasties, so it’s a great alternative to drinking the Powerade or Gatorade type of drinks.
