ELLIOTT EDITION Dear Friends and Supporters, We are thankful to God for giving us the opportunity to work in missions and grateful for the support of many churches and people that make it possible. In March we began our second year in our new assignment with Camino Global that has three mayor areas of work: administration, mobilization and working with Spanish speaking people. April 2016 Journey with Spanish Speakers. Transform the World. Earthquake in Ecuador Our hearts are heavy as we write this letter today. The earthquake that happened in Ecuador on Saturday has devastated many towns and cities along the coastal area where we lived and served for 22 years. We are in contact with several of our dear friends and colleagues who are in the affected area. People there are rallying together to help wherever they can to support and minister to those suffering loss of loved ones and homes. Even though they still do not have electricity in most of the areas, they are communicating by Facebook encouraging one another. The church in Ecuador has taken Psalm 46:1-3 for their strength during this time of difficulty. God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, thought its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. The three towns closest to the epicenter of the earthquake are Muisne, Cojimies and Perdernales were severely damaged. We visited these towns many times during our time in Ecuador. Here is what we know so far about them. In Pedernales Pastor Jesus Cagua and his wife Veronica and their children are safe, but their house collapsed and they lost most of their belongings. In the town of Muisne Pastor Nahum Cagua and his wife Sarah are safe, but their house collapsed. In the town of Calceta four houses collapsed of members of the congregation. Do you want to help? Please pray for these people as they deal with personal loss, with their congregations and neighbors who are equally affected. Camino Global Ministries is looking for ways to help out financially as well. We will be notifying you of ways you can donate to the great need in Ecuador in the next few days. In the meantime your prayers are most needed . Administration—We help to facilitate the work of several missionaries serving long-term and shortterm by operating the Canadian office of Camino Global. Ruth Ann continues to serve as the Administrative Assistant. This takes up much of our time on a day-to-day basis. We opened an office for Camino Global at Emmanuel Bible College in November. VISITING COLLEGES I had the opportunity to represent Camino Global at four colleges this winter. At Millar College of the Bible in Pamburn, SK I was joined by Ken Spaugh, a Camino Global missionary in Guatemala (January 21-24). At Heritage College and Seminary in Cambridge, ON it was a privilege to have Steve Paul as speaker. Steve is a member of our board and serves on the Pastoral team at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Barrie, ON (February 9-10). At Emmanuel Bible College in Kitchener ON it was a privilege to have Sandra Tjart as speaker. She serves as Director of World Partners (March 7-11). At Prairie College in Three Hills, AB I had the opportunity to stay with the parents of Shari Cottrill, one of our Camino Global missionaries in Mexico (March 17-18). VISITING CHURCHES I have been able to visit several churches to speak about missions and represent Camino Global. Marvin Srigley, board chair of Camino Global, and I visited Bethel Bible Church in Seaforth, ON, to speak in the morning service and then meet with the team that went to La Aljaba children’s home in Leticia, Colombia in February (Jan. 3). Mobilization—Our hope is to help people to catch a glimpse of what God is doing in the world, to consider how they can be meaningfully involved and then to take the next step of obedience to God’s leading in their lives. In this area we have had many opportunities to visit and speak. URBANA 15 was a student missions event that drew about 16,000 people to St. Louis, Missouri between Christmas and New Years. I was asked to join the Camino Global team to help operate our display booth. We talked with hundreds of people who came by to find out more about missions and opportunities for service. I travelled from Kitchener with a group of students and professors Urbana 2015 from Emmanuel Bible College. I had the opportunity to speak at Glenridge Bible Church in St. Catharines, ON (Feb. 7), at Zion Church in Didsbury, AB (March 13) and at Bethel Church in Three Hills, AB (March 20). Ruth Ann spoke to women for the World Day of Prayer at EastRidge Church in Stouffville (March 4). I gave an update on our work at Huron Chapel in Auburn during their mission conference (March 5). On my trip to AB in March I had the opportunity to meet with people responsible for missions in their churches: Bonavista Church in Calgary (March 12); Centre St Church in Calgary (March 15); CrossRoads Church in Red Deer, AB (March 16); Anne-Marie and Daniel, Seth, Josiah, Zephan and Isaiah in Puebla, Mexico MEXICO—Daniel and Anne-Marie Chapple, our son-in-law and daughter, had the opportunity to travel to Thailand to participate in the meeting of World Partners International. We went to Puebla, Mexico to care for our four grandsons (February 1317, 2016). This was a personal trip but we visited several missionaries. We spent a Sunday with Jim and Shari Cottrill who are Camino Global missionaries serving in Ixtapaluca, on the east side of Mexico City and we met several other missionaries serving in Puebla with Camino Global. Ruth Ann with the Cottrill family in Ixtapaluca We are thankful for opportunities to work with Spanish speaking people in Canada and in Cuba. We have the privilege of teaching seminars for couples on marriage We were asked to join a Camino Global team of eight people going to Cuba in May to teach in four centers of the New Pines Seminary. We plan to teach Introduction to Pastoral Counselling (Keith) and Evangelism of Children (Ruth Ann) May 13-30. and family at La Paz de Cristo church. This is a Spanish speaking church we attend in Kitchener, and Pastor Alejandro Mairena requested that we do these seminars as part of his emphasis on the family. The first two were on February 6 and April 2. The next one is planned for June 11. We are able to use some of the material we developed in Ecuador while working there with couples in pastoral ministry and adapt it for this opportunity. I have been invited by Marvin Srigley, our board chair, to teach a Spanish speaking group that meets on Sunday morning at Bethany Church in St. Catharines on May 8. We are attending church at La Paz de Cristo which is a Spanish speaking congregation in Kitchener and we have had some opportunities to speak. Ruth Ann spoke to the women twice (Nov. 28 & March 12) and I have preached twice (Dec. 20 & March 25).
