Summer Youth Project 2016 Audition Pack Thank you for your interest in the Summer Youth Project 2016. Please read all the information carefully before completing your online application form. Last year’s Summer Youth Project Oliver! was a huge success and we cannot wait for our 2016 Summer Youth Project Bugsy Malone. You must be aged nine – 19 years on or before 1 August 2016 in order to take part. Technicians must be aged 16 – 19. Unfortunately we cannot make any exception to these age restrictions. Participant information must be completed via the online application form by Tuesday 8 March Please click on this link to fill in your audition form or use the link on the website Orchard Theatre Summer Youth Project Bugsy Malone Audition Form 1 Okay fellas, this is our moment. Keep a cool head and keep those fingers pumpin’, ‘cause remember, it’s history you’ll be writin’. The Bugsy Malone stage musical follows the 1976 film, which was produced with a cast consisting entirely of young people, including a 13 year old Jodie Foster. It is set in Chicago in the 1920’s and concerns the battle for criminal supremacy of rival gangs led by Fat Sam and Dandy Dan. Into the mix steps aspiring boxing promoter Bugsy Malone, who becomes involved with aspiring night club singer Blousey Brown, and agrees to help Fat Sam turn the tables on his rival. The ‘weapons’ in this story are, of course, splurge guns and in the finale, just about everyone gets ‘splurged’ before getting up and realizing they can all be friends after all. With well known songs such as ‘Bugsy Malone’, ‘Fat Sam’s Grand Slam’ and ‘Bad Guys’ and exciting dance routines, this is a massively popular show with young casts everywhere, and a show for audiences of all ages to enjoy. The cast of talented local young people will ensure that this will be a production to remember. PROJECT DATES The dates of the 2016 project are: Monday 1 August - Saturday 13 August 2016 YOU MUST BE AVAILABLE FOR ALL OF THESE DATES. We have TWO WEEKS to put the show together, therefore attendance at EVERY rehearsal day is expected. REHEARSALS: usually start at 10am and finish at 6pm with a break for lunch (and another for tea when evening rehearsals are needed). Towards the end the days will be longer, with dress rehearsal etc. taking place in the evening. Rehearsal schedules for the first week will be posted to you a couple of weeks before the start of the project - although they are subject to change. PERFORMANCES: are on Thursday 11 - Saturday 13 August at The Orchard Theatre. There will be a matinee on the Saturday. 2 AUDITION PROCESS Registration will start at 8.30am with auditions commencing at 9am. Please arrive at the front doors of The Orchard Theatre. It is an informal audition and you will not have to prepare anything. Please wear comfortable clothes. Due to the numbers of people expected to audition, slots have to be swift and usually take place in groups. Once we have seen you the first time to sing, move and make your first impression, we will only ask you to stay on if we think we might like to see you later in the day for a part - large or small. If you are not asked to stay on it does not mean that you have not been selected as a member of the company. Final groupings are done at the end of the day, after all auditionees have left. You will be notified in writing within a couple of weeks whether you have been successful or not. REMEMBER - YOU ONLY GET ONE CHANCE TO MAKE A FIRST IMPRESSION, SO GIVE IT EVERYTHING YOU'VE GOT AND ENJOY YOURSELF! We hope to have seen everybody by 1pm and some of you will be free to go at this time, but it does depend on how many people come along. If you are asked to stay on, a finishing time is very hard to predict so we suggest that you bring a mobile to phone home when you have finished. Please also bring a packed lunch, plenty to drink and a good book or something to do as there is quite a bit of waiting around as other people are auditioned. Please Note: ONLY people auditioning will be allowed into the auditorium. Please also note: Although we do everything possible to make the auditions fair, there are only a limited number of places available and there is always some disappointment. The decision of the team on the day is final so enjoy yourself and do your best! PERFORMERS: if selected, you will be a member of the cast – either chorus, principal and/or dancer. The chorus and smaller parts are just as important in a show like this so please do not be disheartened if you are not selected for a main part as ALL PARTS are needed to tell the story! TECHNICAL (Over 16’s only) : Technical applicants will be invited in for a tour around the technical side of the theatre and have a brief interview with a member of The Orchard staff. If selected, you will be involved in various aspects of putting the show together, including lighting, sound, set, props, follow spots, etc. So, if you don't particularly fancy being in the limelight, then this could be the area for you. Please ensure we have as much relevant information as possible on your audition form. 3 FEES If you are accepted, the fee for the full two weeks of the project is £150.00 and must be paid in advance by FRIDAY 27 MAY 2016. If there are two members of the same family taking part the fee is reduced to £130.00 for the second sibling. CHAPERONES The Summer Youth Project must comply with The Children and Young Persons Act (1963-s37). The Act states; ‘A child is a child until the last Friday in June of Year 11 – even if they are already 16’ This means that all participants born after 24 June 2000 require a chaperone and are classified below as a YOUNG PERSON. This means: Parents / Guardians of A YOUNG PERSON (as classed above) must bring their child TO AND COLLECT THEIR CHILD FROM THE THEATRE at the end of the day. This also means that no child may be left unaccompanied at any time, for any reason during the day, this includes the lunch break. All breaks for YOUNG PEOPLE will be supervised. It is the duty of a chaperone to supervise and accompany children from the moment that a parent / guardian drops them off to when they are collected. The chaperone will be in charge of the child at all times except when a child is in the charge of his/her parent / guardian. The Summer Youth Project requires chaperones to supervise the participants. If you would like to help us by becoming a chaperone then please email [email protected] A CRB / DBS will be required and full training given. 4 BEHAVIOUR POLICY The theatre can be a dangerous environment if not treated with care. For your safety and to ensure the enjoyment of all participants we expect EVERYONE to behave courteously and respectfully to each other and the building. If you / your child do not abide by the theatre’s Health and Safety Rules and the SYP Behaviour Policy, then this may result in our consideration of their / your continued involvement in the project. We have this in place to support the creation of a safe, friendly and creative environment for EVERY participant and we will not tolerate any unkindness that is verbal, physical, mental or digital. We thank you for your co-operation! Participants must agree to: Follow the instructions of the Project Producer, Theatre Staff, Creative Team and Chaperones. Act in a responsible manner at all times. Sign in and out when entering and leaving the building. Be kind and friendly to all participants, chaperones and members of the team. Not go backstage or on the stage unless rehearsing, or you have been told to do so by a member of the team. Not work or operate equipment without supervision. Booking System We operate a ‘three strikes and you’re out’ policy – this is a booking system and it works as follows; Anyone who fails to abide by the rules and regulations will receive a booking. The Producer will issue these. Referrals for bookings can be made by Theatre Management and Chaperones. The reasons will be discussed with you. Three bookings will result in a disciplinary meeting with the Project Producer. This meeting will determine whether you will be allowed to continue or asked to leave for the remainder of the project. The Project Producer’s decision is final. Summer Youth Project is two weeks of working with, and learning from, a superb team of professionals, making new friends and having great fun!
