Friday 17th March 2017 Mrs. S. Arnold Headteacher Headteacher's Update FORGIVENESS The Bible story this week was Matthew 18 vs 21-35. The story told by Jesus was of two men who both owed money: one who owed a great deal and was forgiven, the other owed a little and was not forgiven. The children and I discussed how people should behave when forgiveness is not given and when people make bad behaviour choices. At first the children believed that retribution was the way to deal with such things. However after discussing how anger and retribution just makes others angry, we decided that if the saying “What goes around comes around” is true, then the best thing to do would be to send around positivity and goodwill in the hope that it would come right back to us. This was the meaning behind the story that Jesus told. Please note Lent Activity Books for KS1 and KS2 children, kindly funded by the PTA, will be coming home on Monday plus some family Forgiveness homework. THE SHOUT OUT SECTION! Huge “Shout Out” this week to Miss Muncey, Mrs Finn Sambrook and Mrs Robb for chaperoning Year 5 during their residential trip. Teaching staff attend such events voluntarily and for no extra financial gain. They are motivated purely by the desire to enable young people to have extracurricular activities that will continue to develop their life skills and further their preparation for the next stage of their education. I am sure the Year 5 children and parents will join me in saying “three cheers for Miss Muncey , Mrs Finn-Sambrook and Mrs Robb”. Thank you ladies, we could not do these things without you. Have a quiet and restful weekend! Good afternoon to you all, My Growth Mindset quote this week was inspired by Fred in Year 3. After Collective Worship on Tuesday he came to me and said “People should not keep on the non Growth Mindset road, they should cross over and walk on the Growth Mindset road”. I love that analogy – Thank you Fred! The Year 5s have returned from their Stibbington trip all safe and well – if a little tired. It would appear a good time was had by all! The chariot racing, Roman tortoise and the Roman marching were exceedingly entertaining according the teaching staff – I wished I had been able to see the children myself! Reception Class visit: I had a marvellous time down in the Reception class this week. I am always popping in and out and this time the children showed me the Boat Museum that they have created. Thank you to Rowan, Ruben, Aaron, Jack and Oliver for telling me all about it: how you made the museum, the materials you used and how much fun you have had playing with it. I read Ella’s handmade book all about the ‘Three Little Pigs’ complete with her own beautiful illustrations - quite an achievement, a budding author in our midst! Holly showed me her fabulous handmade book as well. The children are reading ‘Aliens love underpants’ at the moment by Claire Freedman and Ben Cort and it has inspired the shared writing of their own book ‘Aliens love stinky socks’! Ruben showed me his sock machine and explained how, when wool goes in one end, socks come out of the other – ingenious. Thank you Reception Class for brightening up my morning! A reminder of our “Magic Maths” Assembly : 11.30am next Monday, 20th March when parents are welcome to pop along. We have invited a private company into school to demonstrate their after school club content to the children in their individual classes during the morning. There will be an assembly at the 11.30am when the children will be given information to bring home with them. I would like to be able to provide more curriculum based clubs for those children who might not be interested in the sports and arts clubs which we currently have on offer. We have two third year student teachers with us in school at the moment; your children may have mentioned them. Mr Chesterman in Year 5 who will be with us until the summer half term break and Mrs Collins in Year 4 who will be with us until the end of this term. I strongly believe that as a school we should actively encourage and support the next generation of teachers. They are both proving to be a great asset to the school. They exhibit all the values which we encourage here at St Andrew’s: courage, kindness, persistence, resilience, cooperation, respect, I could go on. It’s lovely to have you both on board, even if it is just for a short while! Friday 17th March 2017 Mrs. S. Arnold Headteacher Growth Mindset Evening - Thursday 27th April at 6.30pm in the School Hall Values Champions This week’s Champion Choices are: Alongside my update today, I will be published the Growth Mindset Power Point that Mrs Cleaver works from in her workshop with parents as a bit of a taster as to what to expect if you attend this event. Hopefully you will be able to attend and have a good discussion about the points she raises. However, if you are unable to attend you will still have some further information about the principles of Growth Mindset and how they can be of real benefit to your child and his/her learning. If you read it and cannot make the workshop, I am sure she would not mind if you stopped her on the playground to ask any questions you might have, she is after all, the lovely Mrs Cleaver. The committee have worked so hard to produce such a varied array of gifts and so beautifully wrapped! I am sure the children would like to join me in thanking everyone involved - they have been so excited to secretly choose a gift for someone special. Further update to follow to include how much has been raised to benefit all the children in school. It is so very much appreciated – thank you! Well done to the school football team who took part in the Wodson Park Football Tournament on Monday. They came second in their group which meant they went through to the Shield. They won the semi final on penalties (which they had to do twice because the referee lost count the first time!) They then lost in the final but that makes them finalists! Well done to the team: Louie M, Louie E, Dennis, Ben F, Ronnie, Archie and Tyler from Years 5and 6. TOP TABLE DINERS THIS WEEK – A fine dining experience was had today with: Yr 1: Ollie for being attentive in school. Yr 2: Georgia for letting Jaycie-Lee in front of her in the dinner line because it was her birthday. Yr 4: Mitchell, Alfredo and Leanne for helping the dinner ladies stack chairs. They deserve a special mention for their amazing maths talk about lines of symmetry. They worked out with Alfredo’s help that a circle has unlimited lines of symmetry! Marathon Medal Design Medal winner: will be announced next week! Oh the tension is building! Well done to Reception and Year 3 for the best attendance this week and to Year 4 for the tidiest classroom.
