Step 1
1. Find a quiet place to
sit together
2. Check you each
have the correct
level of reading
book
3. Spend 2-3 minutes
discussing the book;
book level, genre,
enjoyment of book
so far.

Step 2
1) Ask your reader to explain
what has happened so far
2) Check for any
misunderstanding. This
maybe an idea or the
meaning of a word. Look
up the word together and
discuss the meaning. See if
you can say the word in a
different sentence.
3) Reader to now read a page
or two of text.
4) Coach to check
understanding – ask
questions about the plot,
setting characters etc.
Questions should be like:
Why do you think the
author…?
Step 3
Coach to ask a question
that relates directly to a
word or phrase on the page
– point to the place “right
there”
Ask a question that requires
the reader to look for the
answer on the page they
have just read.
Coach to ask a question that
requires the reader to look
back over a couple of pages
Coach to ask a question that
draws on their knowledge
and experience of
situations. E.g “How do you
think the character feels
right now?
Step 4
1) Coach to encourage reader to ask
their own questions of the text
2) Ask students to talk about the
structure of the text.
3) Discuss the overall meaning of the
text and encourage reader to predict
future outcomes
