Option Sheets and Working Bees
Thank you to the families who have returned their ‘Option Sheets’
which also contains the list of working bees for 2014. So far about half
have been returned so if your ‘Option Sheet’ is hiding somewhere at
home could you please return it this week so that we can finalise groups
and projects for our first working bee on Saturday 1st March.

School Closure Day
St. John’s will be closed next Tuesday, 25th February for a staff P.D. day on peer appraisal and analysing
data collected from students, parents and staff last year.
New Building
Thank you for the positive and constructive feedback on the proposed new building and alterations to the
existing buildings. One suggestion that we will act upon is to place the plans on-line so that parents can still
view the plans and provide feedback.
Hobby Shed
We are very pleased to again have the hobby shed operating on Wednesdays and Thursdays this year. This
term the grades 3/4’s are developing their skills in woodwork and learning the proper way of using tools.
We are very fortunate to have our ‘handyman’ Steve leading the team with Ivan and Peter as his assistants.
Over the year all grades will have sessions in the hobby shed.
Sports Expo
It was great to see so many families take advantage of the sports expo in St. John’s hall on Tuesday night.
We thank Mr O’Sullivan for organising all the groups to be present and provide parents with a wide range
of ‘out of school’ activities that their children can be involved in.
Tables and Spelling
Following the success from last year where we focussed as a school on improving counting, tables, automatic response in maths and spelling we want to continue the focus as these area are vital for progression in
maths and writing. The reason for last years success was that parents worked with the staff to get an
improvement and the regular testing showed a significant improvement across all levels of the school. Next
week the staff will again test the children and we will be looking for continued improvement. Please continue with the good work you are doing at home.
Enrolments for 2015
This year we are trialling a new system for Prep/Foundation enrolments to ensure that we can meet the
expected demand for places at St. John’s. Enrolments will open officially on Tuesday, 18th March with
morning tea at 9.30am and an information session in the staffroom, followed by school tours with our
school captains. There will be a second morning tea and information session on the 24th of April at 9.30am
and then Prep/Foundation enrolments will close on Thursday, 1st May. Please let parents from the various
feeder kinders know about the change. We will be sending our flyers to the kinders shortly.
5/6 Camp
A meeting of 5/6 parents will held this Wednesday to discuss the details about this years 5/6 camp to Phillip
Island from 11th March to 14th March. Parents who cannot attend should contact their teachers for further
details. Other camps this year are:Grade 3/4 12th - 14th November
Grade 2 Sleepover 11th September
Prep/Foundation & Gr1
Twilight Activities 23rd October
Have a good week and enjoy your children.

PRINCIPAL
Excuses, Excuses
Rev. Sidney Laing of Dublin got tired of listening to the same old excuses from people who don’t
attend church. At the end of his tether, hew wrote the following item with the title “Ten Reasons Why
I Never Wash” for his church bulletin.

I was made to wash as a child.

People who wash are hypocrites. They reckon they are cleaner than other people.

There are so many different kinds of soap, I could never decide which one was right.

I used to wash, but it got boring so I stopped.

I still wash on special occasions, like Christmas and Easter.

I’m still young. When I’m older and have got a bit dirtier I might start washing.

I really don’t have the time.

The bathroom is never warm enough.

People who make soap are only after your money.
Religious Education
Moments of Grace
In the business of life, we often forget to take notice of the little things that happen that bring us much joy.
Over the next couple of weeks, try and find some time to reflect on Moments of Grace (included in this
newsletter) or perhaps sit down with family and share it together, and focus on the small but very special
moments that we experience in our daily lives.
Altar Servers
We are in the process of creating a new roster for weekend altar servers, and are looking for any students
in Years 4, 5 and 6 who are interested in attending some training during school time for serving at Mass.
These students will also be asked to serve at School Masses throughout the year. If your child is interested
and can commit to serving at weekend Masses please contact John Downie
([email protected]) for a permission form.

PREP FAMILIES WELCOME NIGHT
On Thursday, 6th February our new Preps and their families were
welcomed to school at our Prep Families Welcome Night. It was a
VERY hot evening but we managed to have a great time. The
children sang a special song they had learnt for the families and
we had a yummy barbeque. Thanks to all the families who joined us
and special thanks to the mums who organised the beautiful food
for us.
Look at what’s happening
in Grade 1/2!
In grade 1/2 this term we
have begun learning about
‘The Daily 5’ during our
reading block. We are
looking at the different
ways we can read, and
practicing our new skills
so we can become better
readers, writers, and
spellers! Here we are practicing ‘Read to Someone’ and
‘Word Work’!
3/4B are busy learning about
plants in Science at the moment!
We looked at
seeds using the
magnifying
glasses.
We started growing seeds in cups.
Soon our bean plants will be able to go in the vegie
garden.

What’s happening in the library?
PREPS: The children are familiarising themselves with the library and its
processes. They are using shelf markers to find picture books and are introducing
themselves to the Library/ICT staff. We are ‘getting to know each other’. Over the
coming weeks the children will learn how to log onto the school computers and
develop their mouse skills (fine motor co-ordination).
GRADE 1/2: The students have been studying different Dr. Seuss books and have
produced some wonderful art work that is on display in the stairwell between the
admin area and the classrooms. They are enjoying the nonsense words that
Dr. Seuss has created and have become very good at predicting the rhythm and rime
of his books. The children will be introduced to basic animation programs, encouraging their creativity and story- telling skills.
MIDDLE SCHOOL: During ICT the children will be encouraged to use their email
address and send these to library staff with attachments. The children are studying
the Dr Seuss book, The Lorax. It looks at sustainability issues, and how best to care
for our environment. The Lorax ‘speaks for the trees’, and thinks...
“Unless someone like YOU, cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better.
It’s not.”
SENIOR SCHOOL: The senior children are reading ‘Oh, the places you go’ by Dr
Seuss. This looks at the themes of self discipline and resilience. The children will
be using spreadsheets to graph information from their peers and Dr Seuss books.
They are also reading ‘The Boy on Fairfield Street’, a book about who Dr Seuss
was.
Cybersafety is a study area for all children at St. John’s. The children have been
watching youtube clips from the google cybersafety site, ‘ikeepsafe’. These are
available to watch from home with your children.
Please see separate article regarding the Thinkuknow cybersafety night for parents
in March.
ThinkUKnow is an internet safety initiative which aims to
raise awareness of the issues which young people face online
and whilst using mobile phones. It is a partnership between
the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and Microsoft Australia
and is nw proudly supported by ninemsn and Datacom.
St. John’s will be hosting a ThinkUKnow presentation on
Wednesday 5th March 2014 @ 6:30pm and all parents, carers
and teachers are encouraged to attend. This presentation
will cover topics such as how young people are using technology to have fun, online grooming, cyber-bullying, inappropriate
content and e-security.
This is a fantastic opportunity for you to learn more about
how young people have fun online, how you can help them to
stay in control on the net, and how to report a problem.
For more information, you can visit the ThinkUKnow Australia
website at www.thinkuknow.org.au
We look forward to seeing you at the presentation.

Student Wellbeing:
Dear Parents there have been a number of traumatic events in the news lately. If your child is
affected by these events or other peer or family issues, they may display a number of behaviours that are not normal for your child. If your child is experiencing difficulties or reacting
to news in a way that is not their normal behaviour we suggest that you talk to your child
about the event and the anxiety they may be feeling. If your child continues to experience difficulties we suggest that you arrange counselling for your child. This can be organised
through the School Onpsych Service, Head Space at www.headspace.org.au, Anglicare
Ph 9781 6700, Mirrool Ph 9783 3222 & Kids Helpline at www.kidshelp.com.au. Parents also
have access to a Mental Health Care Plan for their children. This is a free plan that your local
GP will write for your child. This allows your child to access a minimum of 6 free counselling sessions per calendar year.
