31st Annual Operation On-Target (Sept 15, 2012)
Operation On Target is a great mountain-top experience centered on hiking to a mountain summit and
signaling to other scout units with signal mirrors.
Here’s a video from a prior year: http://preview.tinyurl.com/SouCal-On-Target
Many merit badge activities can be combined with this: Backpacking, Hiking, Camping,
Communications, Cooking, Geology, Nature, Photography and Radio. The only limit to the fun and adventure
of Operation On Target is your own imagination.
The next event is Saturday, September 15, 2012. We have four teams signed up so far (the closest on Mt
Baden-Powell). We’d be happy to have more scouts join us!
There are many resources for preparing for the event [1-8] - the BSA Varsity Team Program Guide Chapter:
“Operation On Target” [1] is an excellent place to start.
You’ll want a peak with line of sight to other teams [6,7], and know how to contact them by cell or ham
radio. The Fall Operation On-Target Coordinator for Southern California is Ron Herbert: (951) 685-6556 - his
flyer is attached.
You’ll want big mirrors for ranges over 15-20 miles. A 12”x12” mirror tile works out to 50+ miles – add an
aimer per ([1] p.82), or (better) a retroreflective aimer per the instructions in our new YouTube video [4] or
PowerPoint slides [5]. Plans for the classic backpackable 2’x2’ On Target mirror are in ([1], p. 83, top).
For assistance with mirror-making, peak selection, or finding a ham radio operator, contact Richard Fowell:
