Dr. Harold Gallick (WSU/GS/TS 1982/87/88) is
a busy thoracic surgeon in the northeast portion
of Southeast Michigan and has made many contributions to his colleagues and his patients.
Harold’s mom lives in the Lansing area and has
been battling a significant illness for some time. Dr. Jeffrey Johnson
Harold, knowing the quality of human being
trained by the WSU Department of Surgery, called upon Dr.
Jeff Johnson (WSUGS 1984), the President-Elect for the
WSSS, to look into the status of her care. Harold wanted to
have peace of mind that somebody with the mentality of a
WSU surgeon would be sure that everything is being done in
the proper way. As expected, Jeff responded 110%! He visited her in the hospital, talked with her physicians, and even
made a “house call” at the rehabilitation facility in order to
further assess her preparedness for an operative procedure.
Harold wanted the extended surgical clan to know about the
kindness and understanding provided to Harold’s mom and dad during this difficult time.
Dr. Gallick feels fortunate to have this “fringe
benefit” as part of the WSU surgical alumni
family. This is another fine example as to
how the “art” of surgery is more important
than the “science” of surgery.

DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY HOLIDAY PARTY
Each year, Dr. Donald Weaver (WSUGS 1979), the Penberthy Professor of Surgery and
Chair of the Michael & Marian Ilitch Department of Surgery hosts a holiday celebration
where the faculty, secretarial staff, and friends get together to give thanks for a successful year and make plans for the New Year. This annual celebration was held this year
on Tuesday, December 6, at the Hockey Town Café in Downtown Detroit. A good time
Dr. Donald Weaver
was had by all.
A TIME TO RELAX
Every six months, Dr. Anna Ledgerwood (WSUGS 1972), hosts a party for all the students and residents who rotated
through the Green Division or the Harper C Division during the prior six months. This is routinely held at her home where she
provides appropriate libations and a buffet of about twenty different savory offerings. This year’s party was held on Friday,
December 2 and everyone had a wonderful time. Over 50 teammates participated!

Caribbean Society of Endoscopic Surgeons
The 2016 Annual Meeting of the Caribbean Society of Endoscopic Surgeons (CaSES) took place at the Melia
Resort in Nassau, Bahamas on October 19-22. Dr. Wesley Francis (WSUGS 2007) served as the Program
Chair for the meeting and Dr. Mallory Williams (WSUGS 2006) was one of the guest speakers and discussed
the laparoscopic approaches in the management of thoracoabdominal trauma. Dr. Williams also served as a
Visiting Professor at the University of West Indies—Bahamas and did the Grand Rounds at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Nassau. During his Visiting Professorship, Dr. Williams discussed abdominal wall reconstruction which was well received by those in attendance. Dr. Duane Sands (WSUGS/TS 1991/92) contributed to the scientific presentations and the many discussions that followed.

HOLIDAY GREETINGS FROM THE OUTFIELD
Wishing you a joyous Christmas season from the Fromm’s!!
We have had a peaceful and uneventful year and thank God for the many ways He blesses us every day. We spent
January to March in Bradenton, FL and visited with friends and family. Enjoyed good weather and the rest away
from the cold. After our return to Dalton we attended college (Katherine) and high school (Shelby) graduations
and celebrated birthdays and special days with the family.
Our travels were limited to a month in May and another in August to different sides of the Smoky Mountain NP.
Beautiful scenery and multiple wild life sightings made for a most enjoyable time. Not traveling from place to place
was most restful.
A cruise with good friends, from Boston to Montreal at the end of September, was another
restful and enjoyable time. We are blessed with a loving family! Terrie and Kent have moved back to Florida.
Lindsey, Jaxson & Allie stayed in Bristol, but Russell moved with them. They got a house in Palm Harbor close
to Tiffany, Kyle & Greyson in Clearwater. Steve, Corinna, Hannah, Joshua, Micah and Bethany are still in Calhoun; Katherine has moved back in with them since she now has a horse she can keep on their property while
working at the Calhoun Hospital. James has moved from Texas to Las Vegas working for Del Frisco Steak
House. Whitney works for Nike in Denver and just got engaged; planning a wedding, in Colorado, February 2, 2017! Rick and Samantha
keep quite busy supporting activities at Dalton High where Colton is a senior on the Catamount football team. Unfortunately Colton
suffered a knee injury in their 12th game which will require surgery and be out for 6-8 months missing lacrosse which he also loves.
Reagan graduated from Art School in Atlanta and is now interning in an advertising firm in NYC. Ethan is a senior at UGA, selected to
the all-South Rugby team playing internationally in Barbados Dec 9-10, and in Marine Officer Training scheduled for commissioning
when he graduates. Mike and Kim also have busy schedules. Sheridan will graduate from U Kentucky Dec 16, after spending 3 months
studying in Italy and enjoying Europe. Shelby has started at Tennessee and Skylar is a high school freshman on
the golf team. Sandi and Jamie are still in Vidalia where Tyler is a senior taking advanced college classes in
preparation for next year at GA Southern. Trace is a senior at UGA but spent last semester at Oxford and
traveling through Europe; He and Ethan ran with the bulls in Pamplona. Tatum is a freshman and was active in a
travel soccer team that we followed this past spring; her competition cheer team just won State championship
their classification!
Following all these activities keeps us busy but is most enjoyable. We are going to FL in our motorhome Dec 18 for 2-3 months. Have a
family cruise Dec 26-31 to the Western Caribbean to celebrate my 80th BD; we will have 37 participating! A wedding in Feb, a move to
our new home, College graduations (Ethan & Trace), High School graduation (Tyler, Colton, Joshua), and a possible RV trip along the
Mississippi from MN to New Orleans are rapidly filling up our schedule.
May God bless us all with peace and joy in the years ahead.
Love and best wishes,
Stefan (WSUGS 1968) & Shirley Fromm

HOLIDAY GREETINGS FROM THE OUTFIELD
Greetings from the Smith’s. Where did another year go?
Mark started his residency in general surgery at Hennepin County Medical Center—he has a
busy schedule but really loves the surgery world. Mark’s wife Anna graduated from PA school
and has started to work at an urgent care clinic in Stillwater, Minnesota.
Steve had an internship this summer with an insurance company in Bismarck, North Dakota. He
Dr. Dan Smith with daughter, Anna
will graduate this spring from North Dakota State University with a combined economics and finance major. Scott graduated
from the University of North Dakota last summer with a criminal justice major and then entered the Army in the Special
Forces Track. He began Basic Training at Fr. Benning, Georgia in September. He will be able to come home for two weeks over
Christmas and then graduates from Basic Training on January 12, 2017. Thanks to his military experience, the Smith family
has discovered the joy of old fashioned letter writing.
Christina is a junior at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia majoring in forensics. She worked as a CAN this summer
in the ER at the Park Rapids Hospital and truly enjoyed the experience. Christina is now interested in forensic nursing. Julia
is a high school senior and plans to enter college as a pre-med student. Julia went to the Girls State High School Tennis Tournament this fall in Singles. (Christina and Julia both went to State all through high school.)
Norita took a nursing refresher course and has her nursing license again. She plans on starting work in
January. Dan (WSUGS 1988) remains busy with surgery as well as taking care of all the family pets (fish,
snapping turtle, dogs (one with back legs not working), cat, and rabbit (gift from Scott)!
Musky fishing was good—Anna once again caught the largest fish (54 inches).
“Christmas is the day that holds all time together.” Alexander Smith
Wishing you a blessed Christmas with loved ones and Joy in 2017!

Wayne State Surgical Society
The Wayne State Surgical Society (WSSS) was established during the tenure of Dr. Walt as the chairman of the Department of Surgery. WSSS was designed to create closer contact between the current faculty and residents with the former resident members in order to create a living family of all of the WSU
Department of Surgery. The WSSS also supports department activities. Charter/Life Membership in the
WSSS is attained by a donation of $1,000 per year for ten years or $10,000 prior to ten years. Annual
membership is attained by a donation of $200 per year. WSSS supports a visiting lecturer each fall and
co-sponsors the annual reception of the department at the annual meeting of the American College of
Surgeons. Dr. Randall W. Smith (WSU/GS 1981/86) passed the baton of presidency to Dr. Brian Shapiro
(WSU/GS 1988/93) at the WSSS Gathering during the American College of Surgeons meeting in October
2016. Members of the WSSS are listed on the next page. Dr. Shapiro continues in the hope that all former
residents will become lifetime members of the WSSS and participate in the annual sponsored lectureship
and the annual reunion at the American College of Surgeons meeting.
