CARTOONING FOR PEACE
PRESS RELEASE
PRESS CARTOONS: A STATE OF AFFAIRS
An international seminar on Freedom of Speech
Monday, September 21st, 2015, in Paris
Cartooning for Peace and the Social, Economic and
Environmental Council (SECE) organize on September 21st,
an international seminar on press cartoons and freedom of
speech. This event was born of the reflexion of philosopher Régis
Debray and cartoonist Plantu – also President of Cartooning for
Peace.
The strong emotions generated by the events of January 2015,
in Europe and around the world, together with a new awareness
of the growing chasms between communities in our societies,
have warranted a decision to create an important venue. The
event will be open to the largest possible audience, to all
those who wish to exchange ideas and debate on freedom
of speech and press cartoons.
Indeed, press cartoons arise many questions: in the name of
freedom of expression, shall we tolerate anything that can be
done? Is it possible to laugh about everything, with everybody?
How to combine freedom, responsibility and respect for
differences?
Press cartoons make us smile, convey messages in a direct
way and encourage thinking: they are, undeniably, tools in the
service of dialogue and tolerance. By laying the foundations of
a serene and peaceful debate, this seminar seeks to suggest
concrete solutions in order to live together, free.
The seminar is divided in two distinct sessions of debates and
reflexions :
- From 9:00 am to 12:35 am: morning session will help to define
a multidisciplinary picture of the state of freedom of speech
today. On program: history of caricature through time and
space (with Jean-Noël Jeanneney and Pascal Ory), description
of the evolution of laws regardings freedom of speech in
France and abroad (Georges Kiejman and Jack Lang) and the
status of images in religions (Jean-François Colosimo, Hélé
Béji and Delphine Horvilleur).
- From 1:45 pm to 5:30 pm: afternoon session will be dedicated
to debates and live drawing with cartoonists, to talk about
their work and prospects for the future, after the shock of
January 7th, 2015.
