HIKE THE FAMOUS INCA TRAIL On all Travelmarvel South America holidays, those with a good level of fitness are able to replace a day of touring with a hike to the ancient Inca site of Machu Picchu. You’ll then revisit Machu Picchu the next morning for a guided tour. A good level of fitness is required. Minimum and maximum numbers may apply. Prices are in A$ and are indicative only. Solo supplementary pricing applies. Please note that this must be pre-booked. Day 1: Sacred Valley – Aguas Calientes. Board the train from Ollantaytambo, following the Urubamba River to the starting point of your trek – Chachabamba. A five-hour ascent follows, offering beautiful views including Choquesuysuy, the great Urubamba River Valley and a picturesque waterfall near Wiñay Wayna (Forever Young). Ascending through ritual baths and elegantly curved tracing, we rejoin the main Inca trail in the afternoon before reaching Inti Punku (the Gate of the Sun) for a stunning view of the magnificent citadel. Afterwards, descend into the valley to Aguas Calientes for your overnight stay. Day 2: Aguas Calientes – Cusco. Depart early and take a small coach up the steep roads to the entrance of the citadel. Undiscovered for centuries, the uniqueness of its location and the genius that went into its construction makes the Inca archaeological site of Machu Picchu truly one of the great wonders of the world. Here you will have a guided tour. Afterwards, you will have time to further explore before you board PeruRail’s Vistadome train for your return trip.
