STRETCH YOUR ENERGY BUDGET THIS
HOLIDAY SEASON
Did
YOU
Holiday celebrations are a great time to
gather with family and friends. But when
know?
you’re on a tight budget, it can also be
stressful. SRP is here to help with tips to save you
money on your home’s three biggest energy users during this time
of year: heating, cooking and lighting.
M-Power’s Friendly Credit
allows your power to stay on
if you run out of energy credit
from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. throughout
the week.
• When using your heater, set your thermostat between 68° and 70° when you are
home and at 65° or lower when you’re away.
• Keep draperies or blinds open during the day to let in the heat and close them at
night to retain the heat.
Just purchase and load credit
before 8 a.m. to keep electricity
connected. Your meter will keep
track of the amount of energy
you used during Friendly Credit
times and will subtract this
amount from your next purchase
when you insert a smart card
into the display unit.
• Fill the oven with as many items as can be cooked at one time.
• Turn off the oven 15 minutes prior to completion.
• Consider using timers for your exterior lights. It will make your home more secure
at night and avoid wasting energy during dawn, early evening and daytime hours.

DON’T FORGET YOUR M-POWER CARD
Be sure to check your display
often for your remaining credit
balance. It is a good idea to
keep a spare smart card with
credit to ensure you don’t run
out of power.
Did you know that leaving your
SRP M-Power® smart card in the
display unit will cause its batteries
to run low?
After you purchase power on
your smart card, you must insert
the card into the display card
slot to load the credit onto the
meter. As soon as you insert the
smart card, the message on the unit will change to “Please Wait, Processing Card.”
When you see the message “Card Processed,” remove the smart card and store it in
the card envelope provided. These steps will help you conserve the display unit’s
battery power.

WILL ARIZONA SEE ANY DROUGHT RELIEF THIS WINTER?
Last winter’s runoff season overpromised and under-delivered as a
we head into fall and the next potentially wet winter season, reservoir
much-advertised El Niño failed to provide drought-relieving rain and
storage is at 48% of capacity — just 2% less than last year at this
snow to Arizona. In fact, the runoff season proved to be an
time. We can thank careful water management and planning, which
unprecedented sixth consecutive year of below-median runoff into the
reservoir system.
As one of the Valley’s largest suppliers of water, SRP’s water
managers have learned a great deal over the past 20-plus years of
drought conditions. Regardless of the forecast, SRP plans for severe
drought conditions to continue. It ensures that any surprises are
positive ones that result in more water in the reservoirs than planned.
How did that work out last winter? On May 1, the traditional end of
the runoff season, total SRP storage was essentially right on target. As
includes supplementing our surface water supply with groundwater.
So what is the forecast for this coming winter? The consensus is that
the weak La Niña conditions in the Pacific should bring yet another
dry winter to Arizona. On the other hand, maybe Arizona will be
lucky this year and forecasts will be wrong two years in a row.
Regardless, SRP’s water managers will be planning for continued
drought while quietly hoping this will be the winter that surprises us.
