Annual Catholic Appeal
““Love Your Neighbor As
Yourself”
This weekend, our parish will
be conduc ng the Annual
Catholic Appeal in-pew
Commitment Weekend. Please
remember that the Annual
Catholic Appeal is much different
than a one- me special
collec on. It is a pledge campaign
where you can make a gi
payable in installments.
The ACA theme, “Love Your
Neighbor As Yourself,” was
selected to remind us that our
contribu ons to the Annual
Catholic Appeal enable the
funded ministries and services to
share God’s love with many
others in our Parish and our
Archdiocese.
Each pledge makes a
difference because all Parishes
par cipate in the campaign and
the gi s of many enable our
Archdiocese to deliver needed
ministries and services.
Thank you for your prayerful
considera on and generous
response.
Este fin de semana, nuestra
parroquia llevará a cabo desde
las bancas de nuestro templo el
denominado Fin de Semana de
Compromiso de la Campaña
Católica Anual. Por favor,
recuerde que la Campaña
Católica Anual es muy diferente
de una colecta especial que
ocurre una sola vez. Esta es una
campaña de promesas de
dona vos en la cual usted puede
hacer un dona vo a pagar en
plazos.
El lema de la CCA,"Ama a tu
prójimo como a mismo", fue
elegido para recordarnos que
nuestras contribuciones a la
Campaña Católica Anual
permiten a los ministerios y los
servicios que son financiados
compar r el amor de Dios con
muchas otras personas de
nuestra parroquia y de nuestra
Arquidiócesis.
Sin embargo, cada promesa de
dona vo hace una diferencia,
porque todas las parroquias
par cipan en la campaña y los
dona vos de muchos permiten a
nuestra arquidiócesis ofrecer los
ministerios y los servicios que son
tan necesarios.
Gracias por su devota
consideración y generosa
respuesta.

Desde el escritorio del P. Edgar
How do you feel when someone offends or
hurts you in any way? The normal responses
are anger and even a desire for retalia on.
However, in our Gospel reading today, we see
that Jesus dismisses the old Laws of retalia on that
were followed by the Jews. Their idea of jus ce was
reciprocal: an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.
Jesus tells his followers that, they must reject that
idea of jus ce and be guided instead by his teaching
which is to “…offer no resistance to one who is evil.
When someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn
the other one as well. If anyone wants to go to law
with you over your tunic, hand over your cloak as
well. Should anyone press you into service for one
mile, go for two miles. Give to the one who asks of
you, and do not turn your back on one who wants to
borrow…” This passage basically means, to avoid
violence and animosity at all costs; instead, show
others your goodness that they may see the worth
of who you are.
The following of this teaching is needed in today’s
world as much as it was in the me of Jesus. Have
you seen or heard what is happening in Chicago
streets lately? Not even children are escaping the
violence among adults! Bi er disputes between
family members, friends, or strangers (some mes
for things that are insignificant) are robbing us from
our peace and our children. Does revenge and
violence achieve anything? Does it stop the hurt?
Does anyone feel be er for it?
People o en say that Jesus was naive and to live
this way of turning the other cheek is to be naive
too but the truth is, it is the only way to stop evil in
its tracks. And, yes, it might hurt (like the cross) but
the end result might be much be er than the
consequences of violence and retalia on. It can
actually heal us since harboring resentment eats us
up; forgiving others truly sets us free and li s a
burden from us. It is not easy to live by this teaching
but the other way is no easier. Trust me—I’ve been
there and done that…
violencia? Típicamente no.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
It is with some urgency that I write to you today, about a bill in our Illinois legislature, HB 40. The bill in
ques on, if passed, would use tax dollars to pay for taking the life of a child in the womb through an
abor on. There are strong indica ons that HB 40 could be enacted into law if we fail to act.
In addi on to manda ng state funding of abor on through the Medicaid program, HB 40 also calls for
abor on coverage in state employees’ health care plans. It also allows for the use of tax dollars to fund
grants to organiza ons that refer, counsel for and perform abor ons, e.g., Planned Parenthood. All of these
state-funded mandates are currently prohibited by Illinois law. We have raised our voices in the past for
those who have no voice, whether they be the immigrant or the refugee, the poor, or the unemployed. We
now need to speak for the children in the womb, who are the weakest among us.
We need to let our elected officials know that taxpayers should not be forced to fund the taking of human
life. In fact, tax money should be used to fund prenatal services for the poor and child care for working
mothers, as well as expand health-care op ons for those in need. Please join me in advoca ng for all life by
urging your state representa ve to reject HB 40 and work instead to pass a budget that funds all essen al
services.
The Season of Lent begins soon. Lent is a word that means “spring me,” the me of new life. Let us make
this Lent a celebra on of life by protec ng the new life and hope the birth of a child brings to the world.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Cardinal Blase Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago

What is Missionary Spirit?
In 2013 our Missionary Spirit
Team grew out the Parish
Transforma on process. We
were reminded that by virtue of
our Bap sm and Confirma on we
are all called to be missionaries,
whether that be where we live,
where we worship or where we
work. We are called to reach out,
as Jesus did, to help the poor, the
sick and the sinner.
The Missionary Spirit Team
works to find service
opportuni es for our
parishioners. Our goal is to give
all parishioners an opportunity
every month to serve someone in
need. We look for opportuni es
to serve those in our parish, our
local community and beyond.
We have helped the hungry and
the ill; our parish and our
environment; children and the
elderly.
St. Barbara's Missionary Spirit
Team is planning some great
service opportuni es for 2017!
We hope there is something on
the calendar that catches your
a en on and gets you thinking
about how you can help. More
details will be posted in the
bulle n as each event
approaches. If you'd like to get an
e-mail update about service
projects (this is a great idea for
families with Confirma on
candidates!), contact us at
