INFORMATION BULLETIN / PUBLIC - MECHANICAL CODE REFERENCE NO.: LAMC 97.0201 DOCUMENT NO.: P/MC 2014-004 Previously Issued As: P/MC 2011-004 Effective: Revised: 01-01-2014 LICENSED BOILER AND STEAM ENGINEERS Section 97.0201 of the Los Angeles Municipal Code specifies that a boiler or steam engineer's license is required to operate any boiler* or steam generating apparatus of over five horsepower carrying over 15 pounds of steam. The Code does not differentiate between the conditions: 5 HP and 15 psi or 5 HP or 15 psi. Section 97.0201 shall be interpreted to mean that a licensed operator is not required to use the following equipment: 1. Heating boilers and hot water supply boilers, as covered in Section IV of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (Heating Boilers), which is adopted by reference in Section 97.0303(a). 2. Steam boilers for operation at pressures not exceeding 15 psi and equipped with safety or relief valves set at not more than 15 psi. 3. Lined potable water heaters for operation at pressures not exceeding 160 psi or temperatures not exceeding 210 degrees F. Footnotes * Boiler - means any High Pressure Boiler**, Low Pressure Boiler or Hot Water Boiler. ** High Pressure Boiler - means any boiler furnishing steam in excess of 15 pounds per square inch or hot water at temperatures in excess of 250 degrees F or at pressure in excess of 160 pounds per square inch.
