MSU Evans Scholars
Alumni Association
We would like to introduce you to the MSU Evans
Scholars Alumni Association, which is designed
to create opportunities and events for you to
communicate and interact with fellow MSU
Evans Scholar alumni. In the past, WGA has
directed all communications to alumni based on
the state where they lived.
With this format, is was difficult to keep alumni
involved and informed on what was happening
with their fellow classmates or with their specific
university chapter. To improve this concept, WGA has asked each chapter to create their own
alumni association to provide communications and events that will be informative and enjoyable
for our alumni.

MSU Alumni Board
My name is Alan Sprunk (MSU-79) and I was asked last year by WGA to help organize this
group for MSU. With some organizational direction from WGA, we have been able to create an
organization of over 50 MSU Evans alumni who have volunteered to serve on our Board and work
as Era Captains or Class Liaison’s. These individuals are identified and their contact information
is listed in a separate section of this newsletter.
I have asked each Board Member to introduce themselves to you and explain
their responsibilities and goals for their area. Their articles are also in this
newsletter, but I want to personally introduce your MSU Board members and
thank them for their involvement and commitment to this project.

Mike Birtsas (03) is our Communications Chair and the individual responsible
for getting this first newsletter to you. Susan Rogalski Coles (89) is our
Diversity & Inclusion Chair, Mark Guastella (78) is our Scholar Relations
Chair and Doug Krause (91) is our Special Events Chair.
Our Board will also consist of the current MSU Chapter President, Shane
Kouri, who was recently elected treasurer of the National Committee board. Mike Chamas was
the MSU President last year, and did a great job of helping us get this new organization started.
You will find articles in this newsletter from both Shane and Mike discussing some of the house
events over the past year as well as the success of the recent incoming scholars.
Decade Captains and Class Liaisons
In order to keep in contact with all of our 771 MSU Evans Scholar alumni, we recruited six
individuals to serve as Decade Captains to help us organize and communicate to all of the alums
from their decade. These Decade Captains recruited and communicated with individuals from
almost every graduating year to serve as Class Liaisons. These individuals will be the “glue” that
helps to keep their class together.
The Class Liaisons have been reaching out to their fellow graduates to make sure we have
current contact information for all MSU alum. They will also be communicating with their fellow
grads to share news and info on others as well as encourage involvement and participation in
events designed just for the MSU Evans Scholars alumni.
One of the events we are trying to encourage our class liaisons to organize are class reunions
for their graduating class and/or pledge class. We think that many alumni would enjoy the
opportunity to return to East Lansing for a day or weekend to reminisce and meet with former
classmates, share some food and beverages and tell some lies about days gone by.
At the end of 2011, our Class Liaisons helped with a phonathon to encourage support to the
annual “Par Club” campaign. You will find a report on their success in this newsletter.

Communications Chair
My name is Mike Birtsas (03) and I am the Communications Chairperson for the new MSU Evans
Scholars Alumni Board. I am very excited to be a part of the alumni board and actually think my
job is quite simple; who doesn’t enjoy getting updates on the MSU Evans Scholars Program. As
I think about what we communicate and how we communicate with each other there are many
options. We are starting with an e-newsletter a couple times a year but it
doesn’t have to end there. With social media and current technology the
options are endless.
As you will see in our first e-newsletter we have tried to provide updates
on key events that have happened over the last several months as well as
make you aware of the upcoming events to participate in. Along with WGA
and their new website, communicating with Alumni will become easier and
hopefully more prevalent.
Birtsas’ senior

As I think about future communications I would really like to include articles
about MSU alumni. Here are some ideas that come to mind; where I am
now, adventure of a lifetime, an alumni event recap, a special recognition
you received, or really anything you want to share with your fellow MSU Evans Scholars Alumni.
I am also open to additional ideas on effective ways to communicate and share information
among our MSU alumni, please contact me with any ideas or articles that you want to share. I
can be reached at [email protected]. Thank you and I hope you enjoy the e-newsletter!
Organizational
Goals
As a group, the MSU Evans
Scholar Alumni Association is
dedicated to the “Evans Scholars
for Life” concept and is trying
to provide you “the Spartan
alumni” with opportunities to
communicate and interact with
fellow MSU Evans Scholar
alumni through different events
and mediums geared just for our
Spartan alumni.
We request your participation
and involvement in order to
strengthen this organization and
Scholar Relations Chair
your enjoyment of our efforts.
My name is Mark Guastella (78) and I was honored last year when asked to be the Scholar
Relations Chairperson for the new MSU Evans Scholars Alumni Board. I reside in Okemos and
have four sons – Tony, Mike, Nick and Matt. While I have spent most of my career in Banking
and Personal Finance, this past year I accepted a position as Executive
Director of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel, based in
Lansing.
If this organization is going to
Since 2003 I have been the “House Benefactor” for the MSU Evans
Scholars and have had the privilege of attending house meetings, assisting
and advising the Scholars on different projects as well as working with
WGA to make sure their goals and requirements are achieved.
As the Scholar Relations Chair, I interact with the current Active and New
Scholars to inform them of the activities planned by the Alumni. I have an
opportunity to show them how the Scholarship has great value as they look
into their futures. I hope to relate the importance of remaining active with the program as an
alumnus and the value they can bring to the program immediately upon graduation.

I hope to help the Scholars understand how the Scholarship is truly a lifelong gift and that as you
go through stages of your life, you can bring value to the program beyond financial support. Most
importantly, I hope I can let the Scholars know how much the Alumni care about them and want
to help them succeed, while in school and upon graduation. We are Evans Scholars for life!
grow and meet the needs of our
alumni, we need your support
and suggestions.
If you would like to assist in
any of our endeavors, please
don’t hesitate to contact myself,
the other Board Members,
our Decade Captains or Class
Liaisons to volunteer to assist
or offer ideas. Thanks and GO

Tom Dutch Update
A number of MSU alums have
been asking about Tom Dutch
and how he and Mrs. Dutch
are doing. As you may know,
Mr. Dutch is suffering from
Parkinson’s disease and resides
in the Burcham Hills Retirement
Center not too far from his home
in East Lansing.
My name is Doug Krause (91) and as the newly appointed Special Events Chairperson for
the MSU Evans Scholars Alumni Board, I have been tasked with organizing and promoting
opportunities for our MSU Evans Scholar Alumni to gather and celebrate the program and our
friendships. To achieve this, we have been asking Alumni to act as Class Liaisons and Era
Captains in an effort to open stronger lines of communication amongst our
members and acquire more reliable contact information.
Moving forward we will attempt to utilize this revitalized database in
conjunction with a Newsletter and other forms of social media to make all of
our Alumni better aware of MSU Evans Scholar events throughout the year.
Currently, we are focusing on three main events for the year: the Golf Classic
at Detroit Golf Club on Monday, July 16 (MSU & U of M Alumni), the MSU
Golf Day on Sunday, September 23 in East Lansing and a tailgate to take
place early in the 2012 MSU Football Season (possibly September 22).
Mr. Dutch has an apartment at
Burcham Hills so that he can
receive the care and attention
that he may need from day to
day. Mrs. Dutch is able to visit
him daily and spend time with
him to provide updates on his
children and the Evans Scholars.
Krause’s senior

On a visit with Mr. Dutch prior
to the holidays, Mark Guastella
& Alan Sprunk were both
impressed as to how well he
was doing. He remembered both
our first names and we talked
long and hard about some of the
recent Spartan football games
and shared a number of laughs,
stories and memories of his days
with the Evans Scholars.
Diversity & Inclusion Chairperson
We have asked Mrs. Dutch if
it would be OK if he received
cards or letters from scholars,
and she thought it was a great
idea and said Tom would love
to hear from his Evans children.
We encourage you to send him
a short note or card with your
thoughts and appreciation for his
commitment to the program.

Mr. Dutch is somewhat limited on
visitors but we know he would love
to receive your cards and letters.

Special Event Chair
We will continue to update everyone on the details for these events as they
become available. In addition, we will be encouraging the Era Captains and Class Liaisons to
consider smaller, less formal gatherings throughout the year. If anyone has any questions or
suggestions, I can be reached via e-mail at [email protected].
My name is Susan Rogalski Coles (89) and I was appointed to the newly created position of
Diversity & Inclusion Chairperson on the MSU Evans Scholars Alumni Board.
Fellow alumnae, Mary O’Leary (OSU ’87) and Erin Indovina (Purdue ’08) have spoken with current
Evans Scholars at various events and found the Evans Scholars Foundation has a need to have a
mentor/liaison at each chapter house dedicated for women, minorities and
sexual orientation.
My role at the MSU chapter house is to develop a relationship with the
current women Evans Scholars as well as mentor and guide these women
through their years at MSU and into their careers. I plan to build a future
networking community with former female Evans Scholars and renew old
friendships in the future.
Last fall I attended a house meeting, participated in the house philanthropy
project-Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, golfed in the annual Evans
Scholars fall golf day and met individually with each Evans Scholar female.
I learned we have an amazing group of young women in the house today. Each of them are
involved in the house as well as other activities related to their majors or careers.

Please feel free to contact me at [email protected], if you are interested in getting
involved in building a stronger women’s alumni network.

Current MSU Evans Scholars Update
The Michigan State Chapter had a very productive and exciting year. Each scholar strives to live
by each of the four pillars: Scholarship, Leadership, Group Living, and House Maintenance.
My name is Michael Chamas the outgoing Chapter President. I will be graduating in May with
a degree in Finance. I would like to thank the alumni for their generous donations to the WGA.
Every little bit counts and all is greatly appreciated.
We as a chapter increased both our overall house cumulative and new
scholar grade point average this past year. We as a board set this goal
from day one and were very pleased by the performance of our scholars
with special recognition to our new scholars for vastly improving upon last
year’s class and accomplished a grade point average of a 3.46 with 100%
activation.
Our scholars are leaders both in the house and on campus.
We participated in several philanthropic events that are near and dear to our hearts. With
the continuous success of our AIDS Walk, Blood Drives, Charity Breakfast, Packing backpacks
for underprivileged children and this year we participated in a Breast Cancer walk that went
extremely successful. Our house prides itself on giving back.
The house itself is in great condition! With improvements in the basement that include new
flooring and redesigning some of the common rooms, the house has a new look! We look
forward to this summer where we will continue to improve the condition of the house to create a
great living atmosphere.
Throughout the past year we
have seen group living in the
house reach an all time high.
We participated as a group in
many activities both on a large
and small scale. Some of which
include barbecues on the deck,
ice cream socials, paintball,
hayrides, and movie nights.
MSU Scholars won the intramural basketball tournament in 2012.
Recently, we elected a new
board and I am confident they
will continue the great success
we had this past year.
Reflecting on this past year has definitely been a bitter sweet moment, the past almost four
years have gone by too fast but with that I have friends and memories that I will always have
and never forget. I am excited to start the next chapter with the Evans Scholar foundation as
a proud alum. I can’t wait to get the opportunity to spread my story to others and generate
contributions to this great foundation. Thank you again for your support of the Evans Scholars
program and I look forward to joining you this fall at golf day as an alum!
2011 New Scholars Excel
During the fall semester, the
Michigan State Evans Scholars
welcomed in an extremely hard
working new scholar class. Their
work ethic, along with great
motivation from the active scholars
and New Scholar Educator –
Shane Kouri, provided outstanding
results.
The 2011 new scholars ended
the semester with a cumulative
GPA of 3.46 with three individuals
receiving perfect 4.0’s. The new
scholar process is something the
MSU Scholars work very hard at
thanks to the direction of Shane
Kouri this incoming class received
100% activation.
In mid January, the New Scholar
class was honored with the Evans
Scholar Activation ceremony at
the University Club at Forest Akers
Golf Club. This year, the Scholars
made a change to the activation
ceremony and invited the parents
of the new scholars to attend.
Also in attendance were several
WGA Directors who thought
this new “family format” was
outstanding.
After the luncheon, each New
Scholar took the podium with
their Big Brother or Sister to talk
about why they chose this person
and share some stories regarding
their new relationship. The event
finished with the activation candle
lighting ceremony.
All in all, the ceremony was a
great success and the Scholars
hope to continue these new
traditions moving forward.

Stephen Ruthenberg is the faculty advisor for the Michigan State Evan Scholars. In his third year
as the faculty advisor it has been nice to bring a former caddie from Red Run Country Club to
the Evan’s House at Michigan State University. Steve is the General Manager, PGA Professional
at Michigan State University’s Forest Akers Golf Courses, where he has been employed for the
past 25 years. He is a graduate of Ferris State University, with a degree
in Marketing/Professional Golf Management. Steve currently resides in
Okemos, Michigan. He is also a 25 year member of the PGA of America.
“The 23rd Annual Evans Scholars
Golf Classic will take place on
Monday, July 16, 2012 at Detroit
Golf Club. Last years event hosted
a full field of more than 240 golfers
on two courses and raised well
over $70,000.
When asked why Steve accepted the role as the Faculty Advisor, “I believe
the Evans Scholarship is a program that changes people’s lives.” While he
is not an Evan’s Scholar, having worked at Westmoreland CC and Edgewood
Valley CC in Chicago, along with his caddying days at Red Run, Steve feels a
common bond to the caddies, and would like to simply help young caddies/
adults set up a future of opportunity. The Evan’s Scholarship is a program with a great network
of people that have a common interest and great work ethic.
This helped propel the cumulative
contributions from the Golf Classic
past the $500,000 mark! We
expect this year’s event to be
another stunning success but we do
need your help. Whether you play,
volunteer or donate money or items
for our Silent & Live Auctions, your
participation is critical.
What Steve enjoys most is seeing the excitement of the Scholars. The unity the Scholars develop
through living in the house and the strength they show in overcoming adversity in their lives.
“Each time I meet the scholar’s in the house I feel their appreciation of what the scholarship does
for them, in setting them up for a great future.”

Phonathon Results
The MSU Class Liaisons participated in a phonathon at the end of 2011 to bolster support for the
annual “Par Club” drive to support the Evans Scholars Foundation and the 825 caddies currently
enrolled in colleges across the nation and the 59 currently enrolled at MSU. The average tuition
at MSU for the Evans Scholars is $10,978 per year for each student and MSU’s yearly tuition
totals more than $647,000. With yearly tuition increases ranging between 5 – 10%, the support
from our alumni is even more important during these difficult times when charitable donations
are difficult to maintain and increase.
Thanks to the efforts of our Class Liaisons and the generosity of our Spartan alums, MSU
registered a 53% increase to the 2011 Par Club with contributions totaling $165,439. On a
national level, Evans Scholar alumni donated more than $4,000,000 back to the program through
the Par Club and other initiatives.
If you haven’t signed up yet, please consider “monthly giving” as a way of making your annual
contribution. This monthly contribution ($21/month for Par Club) makes giving much easier than
writing a bigger check at the end of the year during the holiday season. The monthly giving
concept also improves the “cash flow” at WGA and provides for automated transfers so that
you never have to write a check or buy a stamp. Individuals can increase/decrease or stop
their monthly gift at any time. Enrollment in this program can be done electronically on the ESF
website or by calling WGA at 847-724-4600.

WGA to Introduce User-Friendly Online Features
Please watch your e-mail messages from WGA over the next few weeks as they are going to be
giving each alum access to a new “Alumni only” portal on the WGA web site. Take time to visit
this new website which is being designed to service the needs of our Scholars, Directors and
most of all, our Alumni. When you have some time, log on to www.wgaesf.org and check out the
progress Mike Danaher and the technology department have made over the past several months.
This venue has taken longer than planned to develop, but WGA is making sure that all of the
necessary security is in place to keep this site safe for all users. Eventually each alum will be
given their own log-in information and access code which can be personalized by each person.
This access code will give each alum special access to alumni only information and areas like:
•Career/Internship Postings – Scholars and alumni will be able to search the career network for
opportunities posted by other Alums and WGA Directors.
•Business Networking – Opt in to be part of the business network – search for other Alums by
company, industry, profession or job title. This will also be available to current scholars as well.
•Alumni Search – Find and reconnect with classmates – you’ll be able to send them a note if we
have an email address on file for them. Contact information will not be displayed.
•Microsite for the MSU Scholarship House – This microsite will provide you an opportunity to
find out events and programs the scholars at MSU are involved in. A microsite for the alumni is
being discussed and should be introduced sometime this year.
•Photo Gallery – This is already in place and there are numerous photos and videos from recent
events available for viewing. Plans are in place to have all of the old composites scanned.
The website is available to everyone and WGA will be sending you personal login information
soon. If you have had any changes to your email address, please advise WGA immediately.
Spartans Participate in Match Play Challenge
Last year, an innovative new fund raising program, “The Match Play Challenge,” benefiting the
Evans Scholarship Foundation (ESF) was launched by six WGA Directors – Kevin Flynn, Mike
Keiser, Jim Perry, Jerry Rich, George Solich (Colorado 83) & Avy Stein. These very generous
“Match Play Partners” established a matching pool of $1.8 MM for any donations of at least
$2,500 made to the annual fund in 2011.
MSU Alums Elizabeth Gillis (86), Jack Lintol (91) & Rob O’Leary (88) spearheaded an effort to
get support of this program from MSU alumni. Thanks to their efforts, Michigan State had 21
individuals who stepped up and made qualifying donations, (totaling $84,300) to the “Annual
Fund” that were matched by the “Match Play Partners.” Thanks to the following individuals
who participated in the “Match Play Challenge:” Thomas Paluck (62), Brian Horn (79), William
Rakowski (63), Jim Bellore (79), Darrell Voitik (63), Alan Sprunk (79), Marty Koss (65), Jerry
Meyer (81), James Piereson (68), Mike Kasprzak (81), Frederick Locke (69), Elizabeth Gillis (86),
Joseph Jay Supanich (69), Jeff Harrison (86), Jerry Kulig (70), Rob O’Leary (88), Gary Reetz (70),
Jack Lintol (91), Leslie Phairas (73), Chris Cole (95), Timothy Kimmel (78).
On a national note, alumni, directors and club members stepped up to this challenge and WGA
received enough qualifying gifts to match the entire $1.8MM from the Match Play Partners.
