Leesburg Open Arms “Magnify God's Wonderful World” 2016 Summer Camp Registration is Open! Children entering 1st through 5th Grade! What do scientists do? They use math, technology, observation, and the scientific method to figure out patterns, rules, and to explain how things work. We will be putting on our thinking caps this summer and using our skills to “Magnify God’s Wonderful World,” at Leesburg Open Arms! We will be following a STREaM approach this summer by focusing on Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering and Math. June 20-24 Great American Campout This will be a fun week of exploring the great outdoors that God made for us to enjoy. So get out your sneakers and put on some bug spray because we will be exploring nature, making s’mores, and talking about how we can take care of our wonderful world. We will discover why leaves change colors and how stars get in the sky. June 27-July 1 Party in the USA This is the week we celebrate our independence. The battle of Gettysburg was the turning point of the Civil War, and was the inspiration behind President Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. We will be visiting Gettysburg to learn more about its role in the Civil War. July 4-8 Animal Planet Ever wonder why chameleons change colors, what materials birds use to build their nests, or why giraffes have purple tongues? These are some of the mysteries we will solve about the animals that live on our planet. How many animals can you name that hop? I really don’t know! We will be doing some hopping and jumping ourselves this week with a trip to Sky Zone Trampoline Park! July 11-15 Mad Scientists Get out your goggles, magnifying glasses, and microscopes! We will be taking some time to create fun experiments like building our own volcanoes, collecting microscopic organisms to grow in petri dishes, and making our own crystals. Loudoun Water has invited our campers to tour their aquiary facilities this week to learn about wetlands, water conservation, and water treatment. July 25-29 Jump into a Good Book What is your favorite type of book? Do you like mysteries, fairy tales, action, or comical? Books are a great way to learn about the world around us and to open up our imaginations to new possibilities. Speaking of learning new things, we will be visiting the Discovery Station Museum in Hagerstown, Maryland to learn about many things; dinosaurs, space, the Titanic, Japan, and Lego Robotics to name a few. August 1-5 Around the World in 5 Days Culture is the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people. God didn’t make humans to be exactly the same. He made us all unique with different languages, beliefs, and customs. This week we will explore various cultures and learn about their languages, cuisine, social habits, music, and arts. August 8-12 Olympic Games The Olympic Games originated in ancient Greece 3,000 years ago, and were held every four years during a religious festival honoring Zeus. Ancient historians began to measure time by the four-year increments in between the Olympic Games, known as Olympiads. This year the Summer Olympics will be held in the city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil from August 5-August 21. We will be celebrating by having our own Olympics events at LOA! August 15-19 LOA’s Got Talent Have you ever watched TV shows like America’s Got Talent or American Idol and thought, “Hey! I would love to be on one of those shows!” Do you play an instrument, sing, dance, or have a unique talent that you would like to share? This is the week where you will get your chance to show us what you can do! August 22-26 Our Wacky and Wonderful Summer As the summer winds down and we start preparing for another school year, we will look back on all the fun activities we did and all the new things we have learned. We will think about the friends we spent time with, both old and new. We will look forward to doing it all again next year! July 18-22 Wind and Sea How does the wind blow? Why does the ocean have waves? Why does our ocean water contain salt? There are so many mysteries that our oceans hold. We will dive into those questions and more during our explorations this week.
