Custom Design Themed Event Turns a Grand
Ballroom Into a Spectacular Setting!
Wendy Ottinger, VP of
Sales & Marketing is the
creative genius at TMG
Hawaii. Our client asked
Wendy to top last year’s
themed event we did for
them by creating a
rainforest in a ballroom.
What comes to mind when
you imagine a rainforest? A
canopy of tall trees, fan
palms, giant ferns, hanging
vines, twisted roots and
velvet-like moss blanketing
the floor. The plans began!
With the help of many, the
ballroom was transformed
into an extraordinarily lavish
tropical setting with all the
excitement and color of a
hidden secret garden. The
ceiling was completely
masked in a tangled
labyrinth of hanging vines
and moss with subdued pin
spot lighting crystal
chandeliers. The walls were
draped; large boulders
accented the floor of the
canopy, tall tree trunks
stretched to the ceiling
sprouting lush green
branches to completely
hide the appearance of a
ballroom. Centerpieces
sporting Hini Hina (moss),
bamboo, and large
Monstera leaves were
shaped like large floral
balls which were filled with
pink sweetheart roses. Fern
bengaline linens and chivari
chairs finished the look. As
the guests entered through
an opening of hanging
vines, scented smoke filled
the floor of the garden to
create a misty and ethereal
effect.

Hawaiians celebrate Lei
Day on May 1, symbolizing
their tradition of
friendliness with the
tradition of lei giving. A lei
is usually made of flowers
or berries and given as a
gift for many reasons. The
custom of wearing leis
originated with the
indigenous Hawaiians, who
wove necklaces of leaves
or ferns or sometimes
strung dried shells, fruits,
beads, or bright feathers
for personal adornment.
The custom of giving leis
to visitors arriving in
Hawaii became so popular
that in 1928, it was
suggested that this
tradition be given a
holiday. May 1st was made
the official Lei Day and
since then Hawaiians have
been celebrating with
wearing leis, music, hula
dancing and lei making
contests.
